Introduction

In March of this year, at the annual international exhibition WMC, the South Korean company LG Electronics presented three inexpensive smartphones on the Android operating system. The devices were named Magna, Spirit and Leon. A month later, the devices appeared on store shelves.

Today the review will be devoted to two of the above devices: Magna and Spirit. The Leon smartphone has not yet arrived at our office, so we’re waiting. The Magna device is quite justifiably called “big”, and Spirit is also an interesting name.

Both gadgets are practically no different from each other, so I decided to fit all the necessary information into one review.

In order not to search the text for prices for “androids,” I list them here: LG Magna – 13,000 rubles, and Spirit – 11,000 rubles.

Design, dimensions, control elements

It’s interesting that Magna and Spirit are practically no different from each other in appearance, which may well confuse a potential buyer, so let’s start with the differences:

Dimensions and weight. The older model is 139x69x10.1 mm, the younger one is 133x66x9.9 mm; Magna's weight is 137 g, Spirit's weight is 118 g. Both models fit equally well in the palm of your hand, and the difference in size is invisible to the eye until you pick up both devices.

Elements. LG Magna has a missed events indicator and a light sensor. The LG Spirit doesn't have that luxury. Moreover, I note that this is not the first time LG has saved on sensors.

Both devices have a slight curvature of the front panel, the back side is curved. The overall design direction of this year's smartphone line can be traced, as the Flex 2 and G4 models were released with the same shapes.

The corners of the devices are quite sharp, the back cover is sloping and is made to resemble polished metal with vertical grooves, but the surface is smooth to the touch. In general, from the point of view of appearance and ergonomic design, everything is good, but it is impossible to say that the devices are unique in this regard.

The front panel is protected by glass. The manufacturer does not indicate which one specifically, Gorilla, Dragontrail or some simpler one. During use, there was not a single scratch left on the screens. Another issue is the oleophobic coating. It is not available on either the Magna or Spirit models. The surface becomes dirty in a matter of seconds, leaving a white coating that is difficult to erase. After using the gadgets for a short time, the displays look terribly dirty with characteristic greasy stains.

There is a plastic semi-gloss frame running along the edge, and the back cover is also plastic. Both smartphones will be available in three colors: white, gold and titanium.

On the top of the front side there are speech speakers. Covered with light metal mesh. The quality is approximately the same: the volume is high, the intelligibility is slightly above average, the interlocutor can be heard clearly. There is no echo, there are no other extraneous sounds.

To the right of the speaker are front cameras, proximity and light sensors (the latter is missing in the LG Spirit). On the left is an indicator of missed events (LG Spirit does not have it). The company logo appears under the display.

At the bottom there is a micro-USB and a microphone, at the top there is a second microphone and a 3.5 mm headphone jack. Traditionally for LG there are no elements on the right and left.

On the reverse side there are buttons for volume control (perforated, recessed into the body) and power (the button is slightly convex, with radial relief stripes). A little higher are the camera and LED flash. I won’t talk about the ease of use of these elements - to each his own, but for me personally they are uncomfortable during operation.

The cover is removable. Below it at the top left is the microSIM1 connector, on the right is microSIM2, and above it is a slot for a microSD memory card. The battery is also removable.

Displays

The screen diagonal of the younger LG Spirit model is 4.7", the older LG Magna is 5". The physical size of the first display is 59x104 mm, the second is 62x111 mm. Anti-glare properties are average.

LG display resolutions are HD, that is, 1280x720 pixels, density is 293 pixels per inch for Magna and 312 PPI for Spirit. IPS OGS matrices.

The maximum brightness of white color for Magna is 400 cd/m2 (for Spirit - 329), the maximum brightness for black color is 0.63 cd/m2 (for Spirit - 0.53). Contrast ratio Magna – 633:1, Spirit – 619:1.

The white line is the goal we are trying to achieve. The yellow line is the actual screen data. You can see that we are directly below the target curve at values from 0 to 100%, which means that at each value the image is not bright enough.

The same as on Magna, but the picture will be a little brighter.

Gamma ranges from 2.19 to 3.19, which does not have a very good effect on the image, that is, details will be lost at low and high brightness.

Gamma ranges from 2.09 to 2.5. Better than Magna.

Magna and Spirit

Judging by the level graph, red is not enough, and blue is in excess.

The temperature remains virtually unchanged and remains around 8300 K.

The temperature remains virtually unchanged and remains around 7600 K. The shades are slightly warmer.

Magna and Spirit

Judging by the diagram, the data obtained does not correspond to the sRGB triangle at all. The resulting triangle is much smaller. This means that the colors will be faded.

Magna and Spirit

Almost all gray points were located outside the DeltaE=10 radius, which indicates that other shades of colors will be present in gray colors.

Total. The screens are practically the same. Magna has slightly higher brightness, but less black depth; The Spirit has better black depth, but lower brightness, so the contrasts are similar. Gamma is better on Spirit - the image does not lose detail in the shadows or highlights. The color is faded on both screens. In general, extremely low-cost matrices.

Settings

Batteries

Smartphones have removable lithium-ion (Li-Ion) batteries. The battery capacity of the older model is 2540 mAh (9.7 Wh, model BL-54SH), the younger one is 2100 mAh (7.8 Wh, model BL-52UHB).

Oddly enough, both gadgets passed almost all test modes the same way. Plus or minus 10-15%. Actually, these figures are confirmed by the official ones.

In video playback mode (MP4, 720p) at maximum brightness and volume in the headphones, the batteries ran out after about 3.5-4 hours. If you use 3G, make about 10-15 calls lasting 1-2 minutes, “take pictures” for 20 minutes, then the battery will run out in 7-8 hours. The toys will drain the LG Spirit battery in about 1.5 hours, and the LG Magna in 2.5 hours.

The Spirit battery takes about 5 hours to charge via USB, the Magna battery takes longer - about 6 hours. It is better to use standard network adapters.

I collected the official data in a table:

Communication capabilities

Everything in this section is typical for any Android smartphone. The devices operate in 2G (GSM/GPRS/EDGE, 850/900/1800/1900 MHz) and 3G (900/2100 MHz) cellular networks.

If one slot works in 3G, the other will automatically switch to 2G in both models. That is, both slots can function in 3G, but not simultaneously.

Bluetooth version 4.1 available for file and voice transfer. There is a wireless connection Wi-Fi IEEE 802.11 b/g/n. The device, of course, can be used as an access point (Wi-Fi Hotspot) or modem.

USB Host (OTG) does not work for both gadgets.

There is GPS. Their sensitivity is quite good: in “cold” mode, Magna and Spirit find up to 3 satellites in 20 seconds, in a room near a window in 10 seconds - up to 5 satellites, in open space in the same time - up to 8.

Memory and memory card

Both the younger and older models have one gigabyte of RAM installed. At the moment I would like 2 GB.

Built-in memory 8 GB. There is a slot for a microSD memory card. The maximum volume is 32 GB.

Cameras

The devices have two cameras: the main ones are 8 MP (F2.4), the front ones are 5 MP (F2.4) for Magna and 1 MP (F2.8) for Spirit. Both have single-section LED flashes.

The quality of the cameras differs. The older model takes more detailed shots and the white balance is more accurate. Otherwise (operating speed and focusing) everything is the same. The photos come out excellent, at the limit of 8 MP module.

“Front cameras” are very different, after all, 5 MP versus 1 MP. Naturally, better pictures are taken from the LG Magna.

Video devices record in FullHD resolution at 30 frames per second. The quality is equally good. The focus is manual, quite fast and accurate. The Magna face camera records FullHD videos, while the Spirit camera records HD videos.

Below is an example of crops from photographs. On the left is Magna, on the right is Spirit.

Performance and Software Platform

The new LG Magna and Spirit are equipped with a chipset from the Taiwanese company MediaTek, model MT6582. Frankly speaking, the chip is ancient, manufactured in 2013, and was and is installed in extremely low-cost device models. It’s somewhat strange to see it in devices costing 11,000 – 14,000 rubles.

The configuration of a smartphone cannot please the future buyer with various gifts and bonuses. There is everything you need: AC charger, Micro USB power cable and accompanying documents. The manufacturer did not even equip the device with a wired headset.

Design

There are two main features that the future owner should know about. The first is that the device is seriously different from what can be seen in pictures on the Internet. It's a matter of perception of the device. In the photo on the Internet, Spirit looks like a faceless plastic block, not worthy of attention in principle. In real life, a smartphone leaves a completely different impression.

The curved tube design is a great idea. It is worth paying tribute to the manufacturer. Of course, there is no practical use from this, but the device looks really cool. According to official reports, the radius of curvature is 3000 mm. In theory, you should be impressed, so take note.

The back side of the smartphone, where all the controls are located, despite the fact that it is made of plastic, plays very beautifully with metallic tints in color.

Chopped edges, curved front and back surfaces - all this leaves extremely positive emotions.

The device is pleasant to hold in the hand, it is pleasant to use, and I personally retained this feeling throughout the entire time I tested the device, which was almost 3 weeks.

Saving here and there is what most devices in the budget segment are guilty of. LG Spirit does not leave such an impression.

The dimensions of the device are small, so the device fits perfectly into any palm. For a visual comparison of size, I have provided a table with data on the main competitors of the hero of our review.

Touch keys take up part of the screen area and can be configured quite well from the menu. You can choose the backlight color (dark or light), change the order of the icons, place them closer to one of the edges of the phone, or hide them when they are not needed.

Above the screen there is a front camera and a proximity sensor. There was no room in the device for an ambient light sensor, so you will have to control the backlight manually.

The multimedia speaker is located on the back and is covered with a metal mesh. Its volume is average, so you shouldn’t put your smartphone far into your bag - you might miss an important call, for example, on a noisy street.

Under the cover there is a removable battery and two slots for two Micro SIMs. The memory card is installed on top of the first slot.

Both SIM cards can support 3G networks - there are no restrictions in this regard. However, you still cannot talk on one card and receive calls on another card at the same time. One radio module is installed in the device. It’s rare, but you can still find smartphones with built-in two radio modules.

By the way, the loud speaker is worth special mention.

The subscriber at the other end of the line can always be heard, even on a loud street, and in a quiet room it even becomes necessary to turn down the excessive volume.

In our area, Spirit can be found in three colors: in a classic dark metallic color, in white or in gold.

A special Quick Circle CCF-590 case is available as an accessory for the smartphone at a price of approximately 1,690 rubles, which is somehow not at all budget-friendly for a relatively inexpensive device. Such is the paradox.

Display

LG Spirit has a 4.7-inch IPS display with a resolution of 1280 x 720 pixels. For such a diagonal, the existing resolution is quite sufficient: individual pixels can, of course, be distinguished, but for this you need to have perfect vision.

The screen is made using In-cell Touch technology, which means there is no air gap between the matrix and the protective glass. Thus, it seems that you are touching virtual icons directly. In fact, I bet that most users won't notice any significant differences. Recently, smartphones have screens where the air gap has already been reduced to the limit, so it already seems that the display is right under the touch layer, and not lowered deep into the body.

There is no protective oleophobic coating here, so the glass on the phone quickly becomes covered with greasy fingerprints. Below is a clear example (blank screen on the right).

The viewing angles are excellent thanks to the IPS matrix. No criminal issues were identified in this regard.

Just recently I talked about the MeidaTek MT6582 processor using the Sony Xperia E4 as an example. LG has the same system on a chip (SoC), so I refer you to our backstory, where you can learn more about the chipset.

It's sad, but the smartphone does not support fourth generation networks.

More precisely, the model that is sold by us. For example, for the Taiwan region there is a special modification (found under the symbol H440Y), which differs in processor (Qualcomm Snapdragon 410 1.2 GHz) and support for LTE Cat. 4.

Let's return to the hero of our review and look at the testing results in popular benchmarks.

Since the device is equipped with budget-level hardware, you shouldn’t expect much from it. Yes, from time to time while navigating through the menu you encounter slight slowdowns, but the system as a whole is well-functioning. The animation flies in 90% of cases, so it’s a pleasure to work with the device. There is no irritation.

Another thing is that the device is really thoughtful.

Almost all applications open within two seconds, heavy and, mainly, third-party ones can make Spirit think for a longer time.

It takes about 2-3 seconds to start the camera - after all, we are not dealing with a flagship.

But pictures are already taken instantly, as is the actual recording of videos.

Usually, in budget devices, all the shortcomings of weak hardware and poor optimization appear when working with the photo application, but Spirit does not have such problems. I pressed the shutter release and immediately took a picture and the device was ready to take the next one. It should always be this way!

Of course, LG Spirit is not suitable for avid gamers. However, you can still play modern games at low settings. So, Real Racing 3 starts and plays, in principle, without problems, but the frame rate is clearly not impressive.

In Dead Trigger 2, high graphics settings are obviously not available, but you can play on low and even medium settings without any problems. In general, take note.

Camera

A 1-megapixel module is used as the front camera. The final images are obtained with a resolution of 1280 x 720 pixels. In addition, the photographs here suffer from a lack of clarity, pixel noise, lack of correct exposure processing, and all that other stuff. Selfie lovers may immediately pass by, but something can still happen. Judge for yourself.

You can take a self-portrait by placing your free palm in front of the camera and clenching it into a fist. In 3 seconds the photo will be ready - this is a very convenient gesture that LG began to actively use in its products since last year. In addition, you can take a photo simply by pressing any of the volume keys on the back of the smartphone. Your fingers always lie close to these buttons, so it is also very convenient and there is no risk of dropping the device from your hands.

But the 8 megapixel main camera is another matter. The pictures come out to be of really good quality. Algorithms cope with the correct determination of exposure, and autofocus is fast and catches objects with virtually no misses.

It is clear that it is not correct to compare the quality of the camera with that of, for example, the iPhone 6 (also 8 megapixels), but for its level the Spirit really shoots well and will satisfy the undemanding user in full.

The originals of all example photographs can be downloaded in one archive using this link.

There are no special shooting modes, including creating panoramas or HDR images. You can shoot using the principle of pointing, touching the screen and the shot is ready, or you can first set the necessary basic settings, focus on the object and take a picture using a special on-screen key. That's probably all.

The device is capable of recording video in a resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels at 30 frames per second. The quality of the output videos was again a pleasant surprise: there is no blurriness that is typical of budget video cameras in smartphones and other signs of economy. The device can even automatically refocus from near to distant objects while recording. To do this, just click on the virtual icon while recording with the abbreviation “AF”.

Sound

As a portable audio player, LG Spirit fits perfectly. Of course, I mean a listener who is not demanding on the sound level. Most users will be 100% satisfied with the sound quality, since with headphones, which, by the way, will have to be purchased separately, the smartphone performs well - at the level of all other modern mobile devices. The only thing is that there is a lack of volume reserve. At the maximum level, blood does not flow from the ears and does not even collect. Perhaps it's for the better. Protect your hearing.

The existing Music application allows you to comfortably listen to music without installing any additional players. There are also basic tools for sorting tracks, various sound improvers and presets. I somehow liked the Pure Surround setting the most. The latter makes the sound a little more spacious, a little more interesting.

For those for whom all this is not enough, there is a 7-band equalizer, as well as settings for playback speed and tone.

Software chips

First of all, it is worth noting the manufacturer's attention to detail. This is best seen on the example of a standard keyboard. Spirit has all the same wide possibilities for customizing the standard block of keys.

Firstly, it provides one-handed control of the smartphone. The device itself is small in size, but the manufacturer considered that such functionality would not be superfluous. The virtual block of buttons can be moved to the left or right edge - as convenient.

Secondly, you can activate the top additional line with numbers. Thus, you do not need to switch the layout to get to the numbers, and then return back to the letter input. This is a very convenient thing, and not all companies have come to understand the need for this setting.

Thirdly, for additional ease of input, the height of the keyboard can be adjusted to suit you. It is clear that the higher the keyboard, the larger the virtual keys, which means it becomes more convenient to press.

Fourthly, there are a bunch of standard settings that help with such a difficult task as typing text on the phone keys. This includes smart input, SWYPE, and adjusting the depth of auto-corrections from moderate to active and annoying, and so on. There really are a lot of parameters and among them there really aren’t any that are useless. I set it up for myself once and forgot about it - you use it and enjoy mobile communication, so to speak.

The smartphone has a very cool feature that is worth talking about separately. In sleep mode, you can swipe down on the screen and as a result, a small window with time and status information will appear at the top. Thus, you seem to lower the dark curtain of the switched off screen, and behind it you can see the flickering sunny color. Looks impressive and works great - no accidental activations were noticed.

In addition to the innovation mentioned above, there is also support for Knock Code - unlocking the smartphone through a unique sequence of touches on the display (from 3 to 8 at a time). If you disable this function, you can wake up the screen with a simple double tap. Again, a convenient thing when you don’t need to take the phone in your hand and press the power button to start using the device.

The device comes with the penultimate version of Android 5.0.1 already installed on board. A special shell is installed on top, which pretty much hides the OS from Google. The shell interface, as before, is made in a minimalist style, is quite convenient, and most importantly, does not slow down.

The Koreans are true to their principle that the user should have access to the battery and replace it independently. That is why the device has a removable battery with a capacity of 2040 mAh. Taking into account the installed hardware, there is hope that the device will work for 3 days in a row without connecting to a power source, but this is not the case.

If you install two SIM cards at once, do not turn off all wireless interfaces (Wi-Fi, Bluetooth), use the device to its fullest extent (notifications, music, movies, camera, calls), then Spirit will be able to survive for one day. With average use, this can be two days and no more.

Ultimately, we have a device that is normal in terms of autonomy. Not a failure, but nothing outstanding compared to the competition.

Bottom line

Price LG Spirit is set at a level of 10,990 rubles and can be considered quite justified. For this money, the user gets a stylish, elegant smartphone with a good screen and a decent camera. There are other positive aspects: a loud speaker, the latest Android 5.0 system on board, a convenient and non-stuttering interface.

The disadvantages of the device include the lack of oleophobic coating, a frankly weak front camera, only 1 GB of RAM and the inability to connect to 4G networks.

The main feature of the device is, of course, its curved body. Without it, it would have been difficult for the device to stand out among a dozen competitors, but LG managed to give its brainchild a very advantageous advantage. So far, none of the manufacturers can boast of anything similar, but time will tell whether users will perceive this feature as an advantage.

LG Optimus Black (P970) – top model for reasonable money

The Optimus Black smartphone is the first-born of LG in the “above average” price segment. Many of its predecessors were very inexpensive, and therefore they were not assessed so strictly - in terms of price and sophistication, they gave a head start to many competitors. With Optimus Black the situation is completely different: this is not a simple Optimus One - here we are dealing with a serious player, so the demand will be the most serious.

LG Prada 3.0 (P940) - smartphone review

LG regularly pleases the market with its fashionable smartphone models. But in most cases, this image-building is based on one or another technical innovation; this was the case with Optimus 2X and Optimus 3D. Another thing is that the line produced in partnership with Prada is pure style. Two such smartphones have already been released, and now the third model is LG Prada 3.0. The pinnacle of style?

LG T300 phone: toy ambitions

Cute, elegant, just a toy! Such epithets are awarded to the LG T300 Cookie Lite cell phone by manufacturers and happy owners. A gadget with a similar appearance will not seduce men; it is “doomed” to become the property of a child, teenager or an infantile lady of Balzac’s age. Under the cute and naive body, the LG T300 hides good technical specifications and multimedia functions.

Optimus Sol - solar smartphone from LG

LG continues its attempts to get involved in the mobile device market. There were Optimus One and Optimus 2X models - they turned out to be very successful. LG Optimus Sol is a return to the budget smartphone segment, in my opinion, one of the most interesting on the market. It will be all the more interesting to take a closer look at the new product.
