This main question, which worries everyone who wants to buy an iPhone 7 in Jet Black. Yes, he blurts out a lot. The glossy metal surface instantly collects fingerprints, grease and dirt. Fortunately, it’s easier to wipe off all this than on a matte smartphone, which, although it has become smoother, still absorbs all sorts of dirty tricks. I wiped Jet Black several times a day with different T-shirts and was afraid of scratching it each time. A phone in this design is perceived almost like a piece of jewelry. You always want to twirl it in your hands and admire the shimmer of light, but you don’t want to get it dirty at all.

Does Jet Black get scratched from frequent rubbing? Yes, but almost imperceptibly. Try to find scratches in the photos in this review. They exist, but it’s not so easy to notice them. I'll give you a hint: the bottom end, on the bottom right near the plastic polished strip and the area just above it. In everyday life, you definitely won’t notice them unless you sit every day under a bright lamp with a phone in your hand. Does your smartphone slide? When dry, it’s almost non-existent, it literally sticks to your hand, but as soon as your palms get sweaty, the glossy iPhone turns into black soap and constantly tries to slip out. It’s good that it doesn’t slip on a flat surface (hello to the glass Honor 8).

I don’t want to put the iPhone 7 Jet Black case away at all; it’s not afraid of falling backwards, but the external gloss will definitely be marred by scratches and abrasions. The original covers will save you from falls, but the bottom end will still remain open and will get scuffed. In general, a matte device is much more reliable in terms of safety, but you won’t want to admire it. It's rugged and practical, not as pretty as Jet Black.

Stability and performance

This is the second most important aspect of the new iPhone 7 and here, unfortunately, not everything is smooth. For the first time, Apple is using a quad-core A10 Fusion processor, two cores of which are responsible for simple tasks, and two more for heavy workloads. This is the most powerful mobile chipset on the market in this moment, but this power is not felt at all on the iPhone 7. The device manages to freeze and slow down when minimizing applications and switching between them, sometimes showing a black screen for a couple of milliseconds when exiting Messages, getting warm during conversations and hissing not only under heavy load. Yes, yes, that same hiss is present in the test iPhone 7 and can be heard if you press the back panel closely to your ear. They say that this is a problem with the chipset capacitors and Apple is officially replacing such devices with new ones in the Apple Store. In everyday life, however, the hissing does not appear in any way; it is not audible. Lags are another matter. This is a PCT device, one of the first batches. In the preview, we didn’t have a PCT smartphone and the lags could be attributed to incorrect restoration from backup or dampness of the very first firmware, but in this case there is nothing special to attribute such behavior to.

In the case of the official Russian iPhone 7, neither multiple data resets, nor restoration from the cloud or as a new device, nor updating to iOS 10.1 beta can save you from unsmooth and jerky animation when minimizing and switching. You may say you don't notice the stuttering in the video above, but it's immediately noticeable after a long period of time. using iPhone 6S, which has no lag on iOS 10. Gone are the days when a new system was primarily tailored to new devices. The first alarm bells rang with the iPhone 6S, and if you remember, you read on our website about the slowness of the sample from the first batch, which we studied on the very first day of global sales. Now there is already a second wave of global deliveries, but the problem has not yet been solved and not only Russian users and colleagues, but also foreign users with Canadian and American devices report to me about minor lags. Bugs occur even on the iPhone 7 Plus with 3 GB of RAM.

I will not exclude that these may be isolated cases and people simply came across such samples. I will also try to attribute the fact that the test smartphone scores 25,000-30,000 points less in AnTuTu than stated in the table to the fault of a specific sample. It's no joke, but maximum results in the test are obtained only after cooling the device in the refrigerator! Just like on the good old Android smartphones. But how do you know whether a specific device is to blame or not? Go to stores and check every iPhone 7 for sagging in benchmarks and heating? Carry a mini-fridge with you?

Autonomous operation has not increased much. Apple increased the battery in the iPhone 7 by 14%, in the iPhone 7 Plus by 5%, in both cases the operating time increased by an hour, but in reality this increase is almost not felt. iPhone 7 is just as easy to discharge in half a day with active streaming Apple Music and several trips by subway or out of town. At the moment, this service is not without bugs, and listening to music online has a significant impact on energy consumption. In general, if you want a stable day of work, or even more, go to the iPhone 7 Plus or get that humpbacked case with a battery. There is no other way in the case of the regular-sized iPhone 7.

I would never have thought that I would criticize iOS for its stability and the iPhone for its performance, but times change, systems and hardware become more complex, and more and more problems emerge. I really hope that all the troubles are related to the dampness of the software, the new chipset and the first batches. The final release of iOS 10.1 in October will show whether this is so, and whether the problems described above will be fixed, especially since there are no problems with games, everything runs as before, and heating remains within normal limits (the device only gets a little warmer).

Camera compared to iPhone 6S

The smartphone camera deserves praise. The optics have become wider, the aperture has increased, the new image processing chip is working to its fullest, and support for the expanded P3 color profile paired with a similar smartphone display allows you to take a different look at many situations and moments. Photos look great not only on iPhone screen 7, but also on a computer, and Apple almost got rid of the proprietary warm tint and the photos became more honest and truthful. This is not good in all cases, but most often you get exactly what you see in front of you in reality. The dynamic range has also become wider, as has the elaboration of shadows, and shooting in the dark has definitely become better. The dual camera of the iPhone 7 Plus allows you to zoom up to two times without loss of quality in good lighting, and in iOS 10.1 you can take portrait photos with software blur based on machine learning with a detailed analysis of the depth of the picture. The regular iPhone 7 will never get these features, so if you need maximum photographic capabilities, go back to the iPhone 7 Plus. The front camera has become better on all fronts, there were several example photos in the preview of the device, I won’t repeat it.

Is it possible to live without 3.5 mm?

We have already written on our website about the reasons that prompted Apple to abandon 3.5 mm, about how to charge a smartphone when it has only one port for music and charging, as well as what kind of headphones are available for the Lightning connector and which of them choose. You can live without 3.5 mm. The supplied Lightning headphones began to sound cleaner, more detailed and smoother than their predecessors. Their sound quality will satisfy most iPhone users. In addition, the headphones themselves have become better. The old, soiled wire was replaced with a new, smooth and denser one, so the headphones should last longer, and at the same time preserve the original white color of the wires. Less quality wiring is used in the Lightning to 3.5 mm adapter. It has a built-in simple DAC and supports remote controls, so all your old headphones will work with your iPhone.

You will have absolutely no problems with charging while listening to music and other things if you have wireless headphones or columns. Seasoned audiophiles can purchase both Lightning headphones with built-in DACs and amplifiers, as well as separate high-end external DACs that are compatible with iPhone and support Lightning. On a personal note, I can recommend the Philips Fidelio M2L headphones with a 24/48 DAC for street and city use and the OPPO HA-2 as a portable external DAC. The headphones have an on-ear design, but thanks to the shape-memory foam ear pads, they perfectly isolate from external noise, maintaining a bright and powerful sound of any tracks and styles. There is only one problem with them. The model is almost 2 years old and it was clearly designed for older ones Apple smartphones. For unknown reasons, the plug holds weakly and falls out of the Lightning port on the iPhone 6S and iPhone 7 during sudden movements, but fits tightly and reliably in the iPhone SE. If this moment confuses you, then you can expose the Lightning connector by an additional 1-2 mm of the rubber shell using a simple knife. I agree, this is not exactly what you expect from headphones for 14 thousand rubles, but, as it turns out, anything can happen. Advice: always check your headphones in the store, especially if they are expensive models with Lightning.

With OPPO HA-2 everything is simple. This is an excellent all-around DAC and amplifier with a cool design, a slim metal and leather body, a built-in 3000 mAh battery and impressive format support. If you listen to your favorite headphones via 3.5 mm from the iPhone 7, then only with an excellent external DAC. This pleasure is not cheap, there are more affordable solutions on the market, but for some time I found myself in the hands of the OPPO HA-2, so for now I can only recommend it. As a wireless alternative for turning regular headphones into Bluetooth headphones, I recommend the Creative SoundBlaster E3 (review). The DAC from it is mediocre, but the amplifier is what you need, and wireless standards Almost all the latest ones are supported. The iPhone, of course, is not friendly with aptX, but nothing prevents it from streaming music in AAC quality with a bitrate of up to 256 kbps via Bluetooth, and this will be quite enough for most users. True, the warranty does not cover drowning, so do not take this as a guide to action. You can drink some cool drink with your phone in a glass, or wash the device under the tap, but you still shouldn’t risk swimming with it.

The smartphone sounds great both with Lightning headphones and with the included EarPods and adapter for regular headphones. The stereo speakers are made more for beauty, their sound is loud and clear, but not too bassy and deep, but the phone automatically adjusts the frequencies when you rotate the screen, just like iPad Pro.
