Jumper reset

The first method works if you have access to the BIOS. To reset the BIOS settings to the factory state if you have forgotten the password, you will have to disassemble the system unit and use a mechanical jumper, changing the position of which interrupts the supply of current to the CMOS battery. The battery is responsible for storing BIOS settings, so if you temporarily turn off the power or remove it, the parameters will be reset to factory settings.


To completely discharge the remaining voltage, hold down the power button of the system unit for 10-15 seconds. The computer is de-energized, so nothing will happen. Then return the jumper to its original position and assemble the system unit. Factory settings have been installed, now all parameters in the BIOS are set to default.

Removing the CMOS Battery

Speaking of the jumper, we have already mentioned the CMOS battery, which is responsible for storing BIOS settings. Accordingly, if you remove it from the motherboard and then insert it back, you can restore the parameters that were set by default. The algorithm of actions is the same as when using a jumper.


After resetting the settings, you need to reinsert the battery and reassemble the system unit. After turning on the computer, there will no longer be any password on the BIOS, and all parameters will return to the factory state.

Reset on laptop

While it is quite easy to disassemble the system unit, you may encounter some difficulties when resetting the BIOS on a laptop. It's good if you can go into the BIOS and restore the default settings by selecting the appropriate mode in the “Exit” section. If a password is set on the BIOS, you will have to disassemble the laptop. Turn the laptop over so the back is facing you. Look to see if there is a small hole on the laptop labeled "CMOS".

If found, insert something sharp into the hole - for example, a paperclip. Wait for 30 seconds to reset the BIOS settings on your laptop. If there is no hole, you will have to remove the back cover and look on the motherboard for the CMOS battery or JCMOS pins.

Instructions for a specific device model will help you resolve the issue; most often they can be found on the Internet - on the manufacturer’s website or, as a last resort, on the forums of owners of similar models.

Reset via BIOS

To simplify the user's task, resetting settings to default values ​​is possible using the utility built into the BIOS. In order to use it, you should go to the interface by pressing a certain function key during loading. Most often these are Del and F2, less often – Esc, F10 and F11. You can determine more precisely which key is needed to enter the settings immediately when the system starts, when this information appears at the bottom of the screen.

Tip: For the UEFI interface, loading is too fast, and the flashing text is not easy to see. In this case, you can try to click on all the functional ones one by one or find the one you need on the Internet based on your laptop model.

After entering the BIOS menu, you should find the exit menu (Exit) and select the Load setup defaults item in it. By agreeing to reset the settings (selecting the Yes button), you will restore their factory values. After pressing F10, the changes you have made will be saved.

Owners of some laptop models may see other inscriptions in the BIOS menu, except for Load setup defaults. For example, a user of Sony equipment will find the inscription F3 Optimized Defaults here, indicating that after pressing this function key and saving the changes, a reset will also occur.

Changing interface settings is also possible using a special utility for Windows. It is built into 32-bit versions of the OS and requires running as an administrator to operate. Resetting to zero using it is not difficult, although you must have administrator rights:

  1. Open the command execution menu (Win+R);
  2. Enter the command debug.exe;
  3. After the command line opens, enter from the keyboard in turn: “o702E”, “o71FF” and “q”;
  4. After entering each command, press the enter button.

After this, the BIOS settings are reset. And after rebooting the system, the user will see an error message and the need to check the settings. Next, you should manually configure the BIOS or leave the settings the same as they were when you purchased the device.

The only drawback of the utility is its inability to work in 64-bit versions of Windows. This means that it is not suitable for most modern operating systems that require the use of other techniques.

Hardware method

A hardware method of resetting the laptop BIOS settings is required in cases where the password is unknown, forgotten, or when the user did not install any protection, but the BIOS was still protected.

In this case, selecting a password and using special utilities on the boot disk do not help. The only way out is hardware reset.

Button to reset BIOS

Laptop models released over the past 2-3 years make it possible to do without disassembling the device. To reset the BIOS, just follow these steps:

  1. Turn off and turn the laptop upside down;
  2. Check the bottom part for the presence of the CMOS inscription on the case, near which there may be a special hole for resetting the BIOS;
  3. Insert a sharp object such as a paper clip or nail into the hole and hold it for half a minute;
  4. Turn on the laptop.

If no holes are found on the back of the laptop, it should be disassembled.

  • wait a while (in order not to repeat the procedure, it is better to wait at least 40 minutes);
  • install the battery back using the same light pressure;
  • turn on the laptop;
  • Configure the BIOS again, setting the clock, date and system boot order.

Some boards have a built-in non-removable battery. For them, removing the battery is impossible, so you should move on to the last method.

Switching the cleaning jumper

The jumper switching method is based on the presence of a special jumper on the laptop, which is responsible for resetting the BIOS.

To find it, you will need to remove the cover of the laptop computer to gain access to the board. Most often, the switch is located near the battery, and the jumper is usually labeled with inscriptions such as CLRTC, CLR and CCMOS.

The jumper pad almost always consists of three contacts. To reset the BIOS, you need to move the jumper one step: from the first position to the second or from the second to the third.

While the jumper is in the switched position, you need to press the power button of the laptop and hold for at least 10 seconds.

Naturally, when the power is turned off, the laptop will not turn on, but the signal will be transmitted to the jumper. After this, the jumper is returned to its original position, the computer is assembled, and the BIOS is reconfigured.

Advice: Instead of a jumper on the laptop jumper, there may be a special button, pressing which allows you to perform a similar action. You should press with a pencil or pen, waiting the same 10 seconds.

Using any hardware method, from removing the battery to switching the jumper, although it almost 100% guarantees a reset, can lead to the loss of the warranty of a new laptop, so you should use them only after the end of the warranty period.

The first way to reset the BIOS settings on a laptop is to remove the battery.

There is a small battery on the laptop motherboard that powers the CMOS chip. When it runs out of charge after several years, the laptop doesn't remember the date, forgets settings, and in some cases, refuses to work at all.

If you pull it out, you can instantly reset the BIOS, just unplug the power cord and remove the battery.

Then unscrew the case cover, then use a match or toothpick to carefully move the small mounting bracket and the battery will pop out of its socket.

This is usually a 3-volt lithium battery labeled CR2032 (costs about five dollars).

WARNING: CMOS laptops sometimes have a soldered battery. In this case, it is better not to touch it, but use the following method.

If your laptop is modern, then you may not have to unscrew anything. Turn the laptop upside down and see if there is a “CMOS” inscription.

If there is, then there should be a hole nearby. Stick a paperclip or something into it and hold it there for about ten seconds.

The second way to reset the BIOS on a laptop is with a jumper

The second method is to reset the jumper, which is located close to the above-mentioned battery.

The jumper is described as "CLEAR CMOS", "CLR CMOS" or "RESET BIOS" depending on the motherboard installed in the computer. The appearance of the jumper also depends on the laptop model.

By default, it closes two contacts - the first and second. To reset the BIOS you need to close the second and third contacts, wait a few seconds and move everything back to its original position.

If you do not have a jumper, you can use a regular screwdriver and hold it in this position for several to tens of seconds (the longer, the better).

The third way to reset the BIOS on a laptop to factory settings is by logging into it

In this method, you need to enter the BIOS and find the line “Load BIOS Default” in the settings. This way you can restore default values ​​or factory settings.

You will have to confirm your choice with the “Enter” key, and sometimes the settings with the “F10” button.

To enter the BIOS you need to press the “Del”, “Esc” or “F2” key immediately upon startup, although other options are possible.

Please note that new versions of laptops may not have a text screen, but a graphic one. But in general, the scheme is general.

As mentioned above, often resetting the BIOS on a laptop must also be confirmed by saving - that is, select the menu item - “Save & Exit”, save everything, and then reboot.

Reset Asus laptop to factory defaults

To do this, immediately after starting the PC, press the F2 key to get into the BIOS settings.

In some Asus, to return to factory default, turn it on and press F9, you should see the boot screen.

The recovery program will prepare the necessary files and you will be prompted to restore to factory settings. All your data will be deleted.

Then the recovery process will be done automatically, without user intervention. During the recovery process, the laptop will reboot several times.

Reset HP laptop to factory default settings

To reset your HP to factory defaults, turn off your laptop and unplug everything connected to it.

Press the F11 key when you start the laptop and hold it until HP Recovery Utility - Recovery Manager appears.

Select "System Restore". You will be prompted to save the data you need, you can do so.

Once the recovery process is complete, you will receive an HP with Windows OS pre-installed and all HP drivers and software will be installed.

Reset Acer laptop to factory settings

To restore your Acer to factory settings, turn it off and then on by holding down the Alt key and pressing the F10 key about once every half second.

For laptop:

  • Open the back cover, under which the RAM cards are located;
  • Pull them out;
  • Below them, find contacts with a JCMOS signature;
  • Close the contacts with a screwdriver. At this moment, connect the power cord to the laptop (the battery should be missing at this moment) and turn on the computer;
  • Wait 30 seconds without opening the contacts and turn off the laptop;

The next time you turn it on, the BIOS settings will already be factory settings.

Important: on modern laptops, the contacts are replaced with a special button, which simplifies the reset.

How to reset BIOS settings to default on a desktop PC:

  • On the motherboard, find a jumper labeled CLR CMOS and close the contacts for 10 seconds;
  • If the motherboard is new, the jumper can be replaced with a button;

The picture shows that the jumper closes contacts 1-2, and contact 3 is free. In order to reset the BIOS, you need to move the jumper so that it closes contacts 2-3 for a few seconds. Then you need to return the jumper to its original position (1-2).

Sometimes there are not three contacts on the board, but two. In this case, you just need to short-circuit them with a jumper for a few seconds, then remove the jumper.

Resetting BIOS in the settings menu

This option is available in the settings of any BIOS. To enter the BIOS, the Delete or F2 button is most often used, but it can also be F10 or Esc and in rare cases F1, F3 or a key combination.

The BIOS may differ on different computers, but the principle is the same everywhere - select the desired item, then confirm and save the settings.

The BIOS of another computer may look different and you may be asked to confirm by pressing the “Y” key, then “Enter”.

After which, as in the first example, you need to save the settings.

Method 1: Reset via BIOS/UEFI

The best option is to reset the BIOS to factory settings. Then all the changes you made will be reset and everything will work as before. There are several ways to do this. If the computer turns on, then you can go into the BIOS and restore the default settings. Otherwise, if you cannot enter the BIOS, you will have to edit it manually.

If the computer turns on, the first screen will display information about the key through which you can Setup. As a rule, these are the Del or F2 keys.

These functions are responsible for restoring default values. Launch one of them, and then exit the BIOS by clicking on “Save and restart”.

If you have a slightly different BIOS window, pay attention to options like “Load BIOS defaults”, “Reset to default settings” or something similar. Then save the changes and restart the BIOS.

However, the situation with recovery is the same in the case of UEFI, only the graphic window is different, which is more extensive. We go to the main UEFI window and look for the option to reset to factory values.

Typically this option is located on the “Exit” tab or is displayed when exiting UEFI - to reset the settings to factory settings, click on “Load UEFI default settings” and save them before leaving the configuration.

Method 2: Reset using a jumper on the motherboard

After waiting, you need to insert the battery back and start the computer.

It also happens that owners are ready to throw away their components. I want to warn you against hasty conclusions. First, conduct a thorough diagnosis of your hardware. Often problems lie not in the breakdown of individual parts, but in software failures.

In practice, it happened that the computer started, but there was nothing except a black screen. The gradual replacement of components was not successful. The last thing that came to mind try resetting the BIOS. It really helped.
