First you need to get into the engineering menu. We will show an example on a smartphone that is based on an MTK (MediaTek) processor. Select the Hardware Testing tab and click Audio.

Here you will see several different items, including:

  • Normal Mode - normal mode.
  • Headset Mode - mode of a connected headset or headphones.
  • LoudSpeaker Mode - speakerphone mode.
  • Headset_LoudSpeaker Mode - speakerphone mode with a connected headset.
  • Speech Enhancement - phone conversation mode.

If you need to turn up the speaker volume, select Normal Mode.

  • Sip - volume of Internet calls.
  • Mic - microphone volume.
  • Sph - speaker volume.
  • Sph2 is the second conversational speaker.
  • Sid - cannot be touched, since problems may occur if this parameter is changed.
  • Media – playback volume of media files.

Let's say you selected the Media item. See the numbers in the image below? Write them down on a piece of paper or take a screenshot! They may be needed to restore sound if something goes wrong.

In the Value column, you can write the value yourself, or you can click on Level and select one of the levels, for example, Level 2. To save, click Set.

Please note that Value can be set in the range from 0 to 255. It is not recommended to insert the maximum; the speaker may wheeze and quickly fail. Using the trial method, select the optimal value yourself. Just don't overdo it and ruin your device! Item Max Vol. do not touch.

This procedure can be carried out in two ways: using the engineering menu and through third-party applications. The first option is more complex to implement, but does not require the installation of any additional software.

Before increasing the sensitivity of the spoken microphone of an Android device through the engineering menu, it is recommended to write down each step, as well as the normal value parameters on a piece of paper. If your manipulations do not have an effect, you can always return to the standard settings.

The first stage is calling the engineering menu itself. To do this, activate the dialing menu, and then enter the following combinations:

After getting into the engineering menu, familiarize yourself with its interface and the settings it provides. The external design may vary on different phone models, but the general structure and changeable parameters are the same everywhere. Go to the "Audio" section.

All sorts of audio settings will open before you. Let's figure out what each of them is responsible for:

  • Normal Mode – active mode parameters (no audio devices are connected to the phone);
  • Headset Mode – parameters when turning on a headset or external speakers;
  • LoudSpeaker Mode – speakerphone settings. Activated when switching to speakerphone during a conversation;
  • Headset_LoudSpeaker Mode – combination of a loudspeaker with connected headphones. Activated when the speakerphone is turned on after connecting to any external audio device;
  • Speech Enchancement is active during a normal conversation on a smartphone (it is not connected to anything, and is not in speaker mode);
  • Debug Info – data on restoring a backup copy;
  • Speech Logger – recording conversation logs;
  • Audio Logger – built-in software for sound recording with support for search, quick launch and saving.

It is better not to go into the last three sections. Their purpose is not entirely clear, and accidentally changing any settings can lead to a system crash or malfunction of the phone. Other modes offer a wide variety of audio options that are not available in the regular menu. When you click on any of the sections, the following characteristics will open to you:

These values ​​are deciphered as follows:

  • Sip – parameters of online calls;
  • Mic – change the conversation microphone settings;
  • Sph, Sph2 – settings of the main and additional speaker;
  • Sid – changing these parameters may result in the phone call being garbled. You will hear yourself instead of the person you dialed. It's better not to touch;
  • Media – playback volume of media files;
  • Ring – parameters of incoming calls;
  • FMR – radio playback level parameters.

If you go to one of these sections, the settings menu will open directly. The first point is changing the volume (or sensitivity) of the audio device (Level). In total, you can select seven different levels of this parameter. Thus, Level 0 will be considered the lowest sound level, and Level 6 will be the maximum. Each of these indicators can be fine-tuned using the Value function. It reflects the sound level (or sensitivity) specifically for the selected Level value. The parameter ranges from 0 to 255. To change it, you need to remove the previous value, add your own and press the “Set” key.

At the very bottom is the Max Vol parameter. (0 – 172). This is the maximum level of operation of the audio device; it remains constant when the Level characteristic changes.

Having familiarized ourselves with the work of the engineering menu in theory, let's move on to practice. To increase the sensitivity of the microphone while talking on an Android device, use the following algorithm:

  1. Go to the engineering menu, and then select the “Audio” section.
  2. Go to the “Normal Mode” subsection, and in it – to “Mic”.
  3. For best results, set all Levels to the same Value (for example, 235).
  4. Confirm your selection by pressing the Set key. This will save the entered settings in the phone's memory.

Many people may not be satisfied with the sensitivity of the microphone when recording sound with a voice recorder or recording video. To fix this, follow these steps sequentially:

  1. In the engineering menu, click on the “Audio” tab.
  2. Select "LoudSpeaker Mode", and in it - "Mic".
  3. Raise the Value at all audio levels. Adjust the sensitivity to achieve the desired audio capture volume.
  4. Save the parameters by clicking on the “Set” button.

Don’t forget to press the “Set” button to save, otherwise your command will not appear in the phone’s memory. Many devices also require a reboot of the Android OS for the changes to take effect.

You're on a call and need to switch to speakerphone mode, and you notice that the speaker isn't as loud (or vice versa) as when listening to music; or your partner has become difficult to hear you, this is because in different modes the microphone may have different sensitivity. Congratulations, you have entered the engineering menu (Fig. 2). Keep in mind that the menu structure on different phones may differ slightly in structure. Find the “Audio” section and go into it. After logging in, we see a bunch of unknown lines (modes) (Fig. 3). Here's what these modes mean in Android:

Normal Mode(Settings section in normal or normal mode) – this mode is active when nothing is connected to the smartphone;

Headset Mode(headset mode) – this mode is activated after connecting headphones or external speakers;

Loud Speaker Mode(speaker mode) – it is activated when nothing is connected to the smart phone, and you turn on the speakerphone while talking on the phone;

Headset_LoudSpeaker Mode(speaker mode with a headset connected) – this mode is activated when you connect headphones or external speakers to the smart phone, and you turn on the speakerphone while talking on the phone;

Speech Enhancement(phone conversation mode) – this mode is activated in the normal mode of telephone conversations, and nothing is connected to it (headset, external speakers) and the speakerphone is not turned on.

It’s best not to poke your nose into the last three sections:

Debug Info– it’s not clear why – info on backing up information or debugging it;

Speech Logger– I haven’t fully figured it out, most likely it was logging during negotiations or recording chatter. If you check the box next to “Enable speech log”, then after the end of the phone call, the corresponding files are created in the root directory of the memory card. Their name and structure take the following form: Wed_Jun_2014__07_02_23.vm (Wednesday_July_2014__time07_02_23.vm).

What these files serve and how they can be useful to us is unclear. The /sdcard/VOIP_DebugInfo directory (which is the storage location for files with backup information) is not created automatically; if you create it manually, it will remain empty after the conversation.

Audio logger– good software for recording sound that supports quick search, playback and saving.

If you approach these modes wisely, you can adjust the volume of Android smartphones or tablets the way you want. When you enter any of the modes, different volume settings (Type) will become available to your view. Here is a list of the basic settings you need to know (Fig. 4):

Sip– settings for Internet calls;

Mic– microphone sensitivity settings;

Sph– settings for the earpiece speaker (the one we put on our ears);

Sph2– settings for the second speaker (I don’t have one);

Sid– skip, if you change these parameters during conversations on your smartphone or tablet, you can hear yourself instead of your interlocutor;

Media– adjusting the multimedia volume level;

Ring– adjusting the volume level of the incoming call;

FMR– FM radio volume settings.

Next, under the settings selection item, we have access to a list of volume levels (Level) (Fig. 5). For a better understanding, there are 7 such levels, from level 0 to level 6. Each level corresponds to one “click” on the volume rocker of a smartphone or tablet. Accordingly, level 0 is the quietest level, and level 6 is the loudest signal level. Each level can be assigned its own values, which are located in the Value is 0~255 cell, and should not go beyond the range from 0 to 255 (the lower the value, the lower the sound). To do this, you need to erase the old value in the cell, then enter a new one (desired) and press the “Set” button (the one next to the cell) to assign (Fig. 6). When using the maximum values, be careful as the speakers may produce uncharacteristic unpleasant sounds in the form of rattling and other unpleasant effects.

Example 1. How to increase the volume of an incoming call?

To do this, you need to go to the engineering menu, select the “Audio” section, go to the “LoudSpeaker Mode” and in the volume settings select “Ring” - the volume settings for the incoming call. Then sequentially change (increase) the values ​​of all signal levels (level 0 – level 6). Also, for greater effect, you can increase the value of the Max Vol section. 0~160, if it is not the maximum (I set it to 155, with a higher value the speaker starts to “wheeze”).

Example 2. How to increase the volume when talking on the phone? (Increasing the volume level of the small speaker that we put to the ear).

Again, we go to the engineering menu that we already know, press the “Audio” section, go to the special “Normal Mode” mode, select Sph in it - this parameter is responsible for changing the value of all signal levels in the range from level 0 to level 6. Set the desired one for us level. In the Max Vol. 0~160, can also be changed to a higher volume power value.

Example 3. Increasing the volume and sensitivity of the smartphone's conversational microphone

To adjust and set the required volume level and sensitivity of the spoken microphone, you need to go to “Engineering Menu”> “Audio”> “Normal Mode”> select Mic - microphone sensitivity settings, and for all levels (level 0 - level 6) assign one and the same value, for example 240. Now the interlocutor should hear you better.

Example 4. How can I increase the audio recording volume during video recording?

Let’s say there is a need to increase the volume level of sound recording when shooting video, then in the engineering menu for our loudspeaker (LoudSpeaker Mode), change the microphone sensitivity settings (mic), increase all values ​​at all levels (level 0 – level 6), for example, set to 240 at every level. I remind you to press the (set) button - reboot your favorite gadget and rejoice.

By the way, do not forget to press the “Set” button after each edit of a certain parameter. This action should capture and accept your command. Otherwise, the user-specified parameters are not activated. In addition, a certain number of mobile devices require a reboot for the changes to take effect (turn off and on the device).

What is an engineering menu?

The engineering menu is a built-in program for fine-tuning and testing the Android OS. In most cases, the manufacturer, after performing the necessary manipulations, removes it or leaves it on the device in a stripped-down form, suitable only for conducting internal tests in service centers.

The only manufacturer that leaves the engineering menu unchanged is Taiwanese MediaTek. Therefore, if you are the “lucky” owner of a device with an MTK processor installed, you can use it.

How to get to the engineering menu?

Access to the engineering menu is provided by simply typing a code. If you have ever checked the balance on your phone using a USSD request, you can assume that the principle is familiar to you. The required access code is entered using the traditional “dialer”, the “Phone” application, the purpose of which is to dial telephone numbers and “stars” with hash marks. It looks like this:

In most cases, simultaneously with typing the last character, you will be taken to the engineering menu. Some smartphones will require an additional press of the “call” button, creating the complete illusion of completing a USSD request.

In fact, these settings are similar to the Windows registry. With their help, you can change any sound parameters, but the user, when performing these actions, must be aware of their consequences. The volume should not be increased by more than 10-20%.

Working with sound

Once in the command interface, go to the “Hardware Testing” section, “Audio” submenu. All the settings responsible for increasing the volume are collected here. We will assume that before getting into the engineering menu, you have decided what you need to do.

Conversation volume

If you think that problems with the audibility of subscribers during a conversation are related to the hardware configuration, you need the Normal mode section.

It, in the Type line, contains parameters responsible for the volume of the earpiece speaker:

  • Sip. Responsible for the sound quality of calls in Internet instant messengers such as Skype, Viber, Telegram and the like;
  • Sph. A speaker that you put to your ear while talking;
  • Sph 2. Second speaker, used in older models.

The Value parameter is responsible for increasing the volume. Next to it are the values ​​that it can take, from min to max. The Level line indicates the level of the value being adjusted. Usually the maximum is used, in the screenshot it is the sixth. Before changing parameters, write down or remember the existing readings so that if unsuccessful, you can return to them. Each action must be confirmed by pressing the Set button to record the manually specified value into the device.

If you were not mistaken in the “diagnosis” and the problem was really hidden in incorrect settings, after rebooting the device, you will receive an increased sound level during a call.

Ringer volume

To increase the volume of the speaker responsible for playing the melody of an incoming call, you should use the Ring menu. The actions in it are completely similar to those given above.


Value is responsible for the general value, Headset is for the sound that is heard in the headphones during a call. You need to be careful with this parameter so as not to get a sound “bang” when receiving a call. Set the required values, after saving the default ones. Correctly selected indicators will ultimately result in a loud and clear call. But, we remind you, you should not set the maximum values, so as not to damage the speaker or get only wheezing and clanging at the output.
