Galaxy s4 mini parameters. Experience using Samsung Galaxy S4 Mini: a small flagship. Wi-Fi is a technology that provides wireless communication for transmitting data over close distances between different devices

General characteristics

Type

Deciding on the type of device (phone or smartphone?) is quite simple. If you need a simple and inexpensive device for calls and SMS, it is recommended to select the phone. A smartphone is more expensive, but it offers a wide variety of options: games, videos, the Internet, thousands of programs for all occasions. However, its battery life is significantly less than that of a regular phone.

Samsung Galaxy S4 has already made a kind of revolution in the market when sales of the handset reached 10 million units in the first month alone. But what are the chances of success in the mini version of this smartphone!? The version of the flagship with the mini prefix recently visited the editorial office, so we share our impressions.

Materials and build quality

As in the case of the “oldest” one, the case of the mini version of the flagship uses scratch-resistant plastic, in other words, polycarbonate. The front panel is covered with third-generation protective glass. The side edges, which at first glance appear to be metal, are actually also plastic. But it’s worth paying tribute to – the manufacturer’s metallic makeup was especially successful here.

Of course, the small dimensions (124.6x61.3x8.9 mm) of the case were made possible due to one simple factor - a smaller display diagonal - 4.3 versus the 5-inch panel of the original version of the smartphone. Yes, the “mini-flagship” is somewhat thicker than the “big one” - 8.9 mm versus 7.9 mm, but I would not say that this factor is very critical.

Regarding the fit of the body elements with each other, there are no complaints here - seams and gaps are within acceptable standards. But the plastic itself creaks a little. But in fairness, I note that we had in our hands a fairly early engineering version of the device, for which such a state of affairs is quite acceptable.

The procedure for attaching the battery cover to the panel will take you no more than a second or two. The fixation is reliable - it does not slip off arbitrarily. It is also easy to remove. By the way, keep in mind that the lid is thin and bends easily. However, you shouldn’t worry - you won’t break it unintentionally.

Design

The appearance of the S4 Mini is not the same as that of other Samsung smartphones. Yes, on the one hand, the handset has some hereditary features of representatives of the Galaxy line. But, on the other hand, one cannot ignore the design in the style of a strict rectangle with elegantly rounded edges, a more “adult” edging (exactly the same as that of the S4) and other little things. In short, the recognizable features and style have been preserved, but at the same time, quite good cosmetics have been applied to the exterior of the device.

Ergonomics of functional elements

The front panel is occupied by a 4.3-inch display, two touch buttons and one hardware button, as well as a 1.9 megapixel peephole. front camera plus light and proximity sensors.

A special feature of the front camera is the ability to shoot video at 720p resolution.

The touch buttons are designed in exactly the same way as in other Galaxy smartphones. While the user is working with the device, they are highlighted, and when he stops, the duration of their illumination depends on the definition of the timeout in the corresponding menu.

In the body of the rear panel there is a peephole for the main 8 MP camera, as well as an LED flash. In addition, there is also an engraved logo of the manufacturer and a speaker output speakerphone.

On the right side there is a power on/off button for the smartphone. It is also used to block control. Not far from the last mentioned element there is a special gap so that the user can remove the battery pack cover.

A paired sound volume control button is available on the opposite panel.

At the top end there is a classic 3.5 mm jack, as well as one of the built-in microphone outputs plus an IR port peephole.

Another microphone output is on the bottom end. The Micro-port is also located here.

Display

4.3-inch touch display based on Super matrix. For a smaller version of the flagship it looks quite reasonable. But on the resolution, it’s obvious that they tried to save money - only 960x540 pixels. But with the exception of the smallest details, this resolution does not affect the image quality much. However, frankly speaking, it’s depressing on a purely subconscious level, especially if you remember that the S4’s display is 1080p.

Density 256ppi.

The maximum brightness for the “Standard” mode is 289 cd/m2, and in the “Film” mode - 277 cd/m2.

Viewing angles are good.

Supports touch control using eight fingers simultaneously. The display sensitivity is high – there are no complaints in this regard.

From the settings submenu, the user has the opportunity to work with a standard list (timeout, screen saver, etc.), select the font style and size, configure the display of charge as a percentage, and much more.

Memory

From the officially declared 8 GB of built-in user memory, in practice a little less than 5 GB is available. There is no information yet about whether modifications with a different volume will appear over time.

The possibility of expansion is also provided. Slot under the battery. The maximum memory card capacity is up to 64 GB inclusive.

Battery

Samsung Galaxy S4 Mini received a battery with a capacity of 1900 mAh (in the original version 2600 mAh). Taking into account the simpler filling, as well as the smaller display, which also features an energy-efficient matrix, the device shows quite good battery life. For example, a video with a resolution at maximum display backlight and turned on played for just over 10 hours. But don’t forget, we are talking about a test version of the device, and therefore the autonomy in a commercial device will be optimized even more. However, even this figure looks quite good. For a day or a little more, moderate loads are enough, as they say, head on.

I’ll also add that in the S4 Mini settings menu there is a sub-item “Energy Saving”. How it is designed and what it gives to the user, see the illustrations below.

Speakers

Two separate speakers - communication and speakerphone.

With the first, in my opinion, there are no problems - sufficient power even for places with high noise levels. Cleanliness also does not fail.

There were also no complaints about the sound volume of the speakerphone. But I would like better cleanliness. However, perhaps this is a drawback of our version of the tube.

It was not possible to evaluate the quality of the headphones, since only the smartphone itself arrived to us.

Equipment and shell

Samsung Galaxy S4 Mini runs operating system Android 4.2.2. It’s still too early to talk about updating the release, due to the lack of one as such. But, in my opinion, in the future updating this device to version 4.3 is quite acceptable.

The “heart” of the system is the Snapdragon 400 processor, clocked at 1.7 GHz, as well as Adreno 305 graphics. The RAM capacity is 1.5 GB.

The proprietary Nature UX shell is installed on top of the axle. We also saw it in the S4 review. A few illustrations for reminders and a link to the review of the flagship.

Performance and wireless interfaces

System performance at good level, as the test results prove.

Support for Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n module is declared. Features include quick setup using the WPS button, entering a WPS PIN code, notifying the user about the presence of an open access point, and much more. Wi-Fi Direct, by the way, is also available.

Pre-installed applications

Among these I would like to mention Samsung Link, WatchON, S Translator, S Memo, as well as Group Play. By the way, and no less interesting, the mini version of the S4 also included an FM receiver, which in turn is not present in the original version of the smartphone.

Camera

The main 8 MP camera has received a significant number of settings and shooting modes, can shoot video with a resolution of 1080p and has an LED flash. Below are the settings.

Gestures and dual-SIM

From the “Movement and Gestures” submenu, motion and palm control are available.

Smart Shutdown feature! Everything is simple here. Enabling it allows the screen to remain on at all times, but only as long as the user is looking at it.

And finally, the last feature is “Voice Control”. I’m sure there’s no need to comment on its features. Look at the illustrations below.

The Samsung Galaxy S4 Mini smartphone will be available on the market in variations with a slot for a single SIM card, as well as with support for dual-SIM mode. Depending on whether it has one SIM card or two, the handsets will receive the corresponding index - I9192 - dual-SIM and I9190 - version with one SIM card. We had a dual-SIM version of a smartphone. What was especially memorable was the so-called “Active Mode”. Everything is simple here - by using it, calls can be received on both SIM cards even during a conversation. In my opinion, this is a plus, because many solutions with support for dual-SIM mode cannot boast of this.

conclusions

While official sales have not begun in Ukraine, the price tag can only be judged based on the tags for pre-orders in Europe (which are often similar to Ukrainian ones) - 440-460 euros, depending on the seller. Taking into account the fact that S4 can already be bought today for 5100-5300 hryvnia, the cost of the “little four”, subjectively speaking, looks somewhat overpriced. I recommend waiting a little - a couple of months and the price will drop to the ideal 3700-3900 hryvnia.

The device itself is good. It has excellent ergonomics, it is comfortable for the hand and pocket, and the capabilities “under the hood” are by no means the worst. In short, if you need a compact and productive smartphone With interesting features and applications, the Samsung Galaxy S4 Mini is quite an interesting candidate for acquaintance.

Introduction

After the announcement of the Galaxy S4, it became clear that Samsung, by tradition, will begin to produce a huge number of seemingly identical (as they have recently begun to be called) “pieces of soap”: the only difference is that some are smaller, others are larger. The filling, as is correct, is much weaker than the flagship model, but significant investment is not required. However, the cost still remains around the 20 thousand rubles mark.

Obviously, if there is a version of S3 mini, then there must be an S4 mini. Unfortunately, both gadgets received, perhaps, only part of the name and appearance from their older brothers, although people have long been demanding powerful devices with small dimensions. Alas, the manufacturers don’t hear us and continue to reason logically in their own way: since the phone is small, it means the hardware can be cut down.

The review will focus only on the main points, since this is a typical example of the South Korean giant's products.

Design, dimensions, control elements

As was already said at the beginning of the text, as soon as Samsung’s new creation sees the light, expect offspring in the form of dozens of identical-looking smartphones and phones. Therefore, naturally, the S4 mini almost completely copies the original Galaxy S4. Nevertheless, from my point of view, the appearance of the current flagship is quite successful: thin, light, despite the plastic, durable, although glossy. The S4 mini evokes absolutely the same emotions. It is worth adding that the device, due to its even smaller size (124.6 x 61.3 x 8.9 mm) and weight (107 grams), fits nicely in the hand! Really convenient, you don't want to let it go out of your hands. In fact, the experience of “communicating” with the S4 mini is very interesting: similar appearance, functions and menus, but operating with one hand is more comfortable. I think this will be appreciated by those who clearly dislike spade-shaped phones.

The front side, as always, is protected by glass. It’s unlikely to be Gorilla Glass (although perhaps the first generation), but not a single scratch appeared during a month of active use. Under the glass there is dark gray plastic (there is also a white color), on which small black diamonds are applied. The back panel is also made of plastic, but here the pattern is slightly different, i.e. light gray diamonds on a black background. I think it looks cool, at least previous version The S3 mini did not evoke any emotions in me.

The assembly is excellent, as if the case is not dismountable: nothing plays, does not creak.

A thin edging along the perimeter of the front part forms a small side, the sides of the device are semi-gloss plastic, painted to resemble metal.

On the top of the front side there is a camera for video calls, two sensors (lighting and proximity), a speech speaker covered with a metal mesh. The speaker volume is very high, in a quiet environment it is worth turning it down. The interlocutor can be heard clearly and intelligibly, the timbre is pleasant, and the mid frequencies are mainly heard. During a call, you can adjust the level not only standard means, but also activate the special “Additional Volume” function. Almost all new Samsung devices have a similar function.

Below the screen there are two touch buttons “Back” and “Menu”, and between them is the unforgettable mechanical “Home” button. The tactile sensations regarding the Galaxy S4 are approximately the same: the travel is minimal, the pressure is firm. U touch buttons There is a backlight, it is white, dim, but quite noticeable during the day.

At the bottom there is a microUSB and the main microphone, at the top there is an IR port (inherited from the flagship), a second microphone (used for recording sound in stereo and noise reduction), and a 3.5 mm audio output.

On the left is the volume control, and on the right is the power key.

At the back there is a camera that rises slightly above the body, and a flash, as well as a speakerphone.

To open the cover, you need to pry it at the notch at the top left. Under the battery are slots for a microSIM card and microSDHC.

Samsung S4 mini and Samsung S4

Display

Unlike the previous model, this one has a 4.3-inch diagonal screen (physical size - 53x94 mm). If earlier 4 inches was considered a “shovel”, now even a slightly larger size evokes affection: they say, what a small and cute phone it is. In S3 mini the resolution was 480x800 pixels, in S4 mini it was slightly increased - 540x960 pixels (qHD). In both cases the matrix is SuperAMOLED. Let's not argue how good or bad it is, since all this relates to taste. Personally, I love bright colors and maximum “depth” of black, and even though the SA matrix fades more than IPS in the sun, but, for example, my work does not involve constantly being under the direct rays of the sun. By the way, in the previous article (S4 Active test), I experimentally found out that the SA matrix on the S4 in sunny weather displays even a slightly better picture than the PLS matrix on the S4 Active. Below is a comparison of the screens of S4 mini (left), S4 Active and S4 (right):

Matrices under a microscope:

In the “Display” settings, the “Screen mode” item is preserved:

Battery

A removable lithium-ion (Li-Ion) battery with a capacity of 1900 mAh, 3.8 V, 7.22 Wh is installed. Despite the seemingly not the largest battery capacity, the operating time was generally pleasing!

The developers claim that the device will operate for 300 hours in standby mode, and up to 12 hours in talk mode.

With 15-20 minutes of calls a day, 4-5 hours of 3G, a couple of hours of Wi-Fi, an hour of watching videos and the same amount of listening to music, the Galaxy S4 mini managed to squeeze out a little more than 10 hours of work from a single charge.

More numbers:

  • Only in talk mode the device works up to 8 hours
  • Only when playing video (720p) at maximum volume in headphones and maximum screen brightness - just over 5 hours
  • Only playing music in headphones at maximum volume – about 45 hours
  • Games only – just over 3 hours

Communication capabilities

The smartphone operates in 2G (850/900/1800/1900 MHz) and 3G (850/900/1900/2100 MHz) cellular networks; LTE is present only in the i9195 model. Speed HSDPA – up to 42 Mbit/s, HSUPA – up to 5.76 Mbit/s. Available Bluetooth version 4.0 HS (A2DP, LE, EDR).

There is a wireless connection Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n (Dual band). The device can be used as an access point (Wi-Fi Hotspot) and file transfer (Wi-Fi Direct).

High-speed USB 2.0 is also used for file transfer and data synchronization. When connected to a PC, the mini is defined as a USB Flash device (MTP) or camera (PTP).

SAR value

Your phone is manufactured to comply with EU Council guidelines for exposure to radio frequency (RF) energy. These standards prohibit the sale mobile phones, whose radiation level (called specific absorption rate, SAR) exceeds 2.0 watts per kilogram of body weight. During testing (information provided by Samsung), the maximum SAR for this model was: 0.298 W/kg near the head, 0.361 W/kg near the body.

When in use, the actual SAR values of the device are significantly lower than the values stated above. This is due to the fact that for efficient work systems and reduce the impact on the network operating power mobile device is automatically reduced if the call does not require full power. The less output power device, the lower the SAR value.

Memory and memory card

The developers decided not to skimp on RAM, so they installed the most optimal amount for such a device - 1.5 GB. Therefore, the device does not slow down at all and has no difficulties launching applications. On average, about 900 MB are free - a huge amount for such a smartphone.

Flash memory – 8 GB. A little more than 4 GB is allocated for application installations and data storage. Of course, there is a card slot microSDHC memory, the maximum volume of which can be 64 GB.

Camera

Two cameras are used here: the main 8 MP (F2.6, 33 mm) with autofocus and the front 1.9 MP without autofocus. There is a single-section LED flash. The maximum photo resolution is 3264x1836 pixels, video - 1920x1080 pixels at 30 frames per second.

The quality of photographs is similar to those taken on the S4 Active, i.e. a little better than Galaxy S2, but slightly worse than Galaxy S3. I don’t understand what prevented me from using the same module as in the Galaxy S3.

Video and sound are recorded clearly, there is no pixelation.

Video file characteristics:

  • File Format: MP4
  • Video codec: AVC, 17 Mbit/s
  • Resolution: 1920 x 1080, 30 fps
  • Audio codec: AAC, 128 Kbps
  • Channels: 2 channels, 48 KHz

Performance

The Samsung Galaxy S4 mini smartphone is equipped with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 400 chipset and a dual-core Krait 1.7 GHz processor (28 nm, ARMv7). Adreno 305 is used as a graphics accelerator.

The device operates smoothly, there are no interface slowdowns or glitches, and there are no lags. Almost all toys are suitable.

Below is brief information and performance tests (CPU-Z, Quadrant Standard, Antutu Benchmark, 3D Mark):

Replenished new version popular “four” Samsung Galaxy S4 Mini review which summarizes all the most interesting information about this model.

Externally, as promised by Samsung representatives, this phone completely copies the base model, with the exception of dimensions. The reduced “copy” has dimensions of 12.4X6.13X0.89cm and weighs 107g.

Performance and software

Tests conducted using specialized applications showed that in almost all the main parameters the mini version is inferior to the older S4 model.

Unlike the basic model, it uses not eight, but dual core processor and, moreover, with a clock frequency of 1.7 GHz less by a tenth. RAM manufacturers also found it necessary to reduce by 500MB and leave only 1.5GB. Similarly with the base memory - it is at the level of entry-level budget devices - 8GB. The device operates under operating control Android systems 4.2. The smartphone has a GLONASS GPS navigation module, a built-in geomagnetic compass, an accelerometer and a gyroscope.

Screen

Samsung Galaxy S4 Mini specifications touch screen are as follows:

Technology: Super AMOLED;

Pixels per inch: 256;

Diagonal: 4.3’.

The screen supports multitouch technology, which recognizes not only single touches on the screen, but also gestures of several fingers. The screen accepts up to eight simultaneous touches.

The presence of a proximity sensor allows you to telephone conversation, block the sensor and dim the screen to save energy.

The screen is covered with protective glass with anti-reflective and oleophobic coating. Automatic adjustment brightness in a dark room reduces the brightness, and under the sun, on the contrary, it increases for the convenience of the user.

Camera

Traditionally for smartphones, the S4 mini has two cameras - main and front. The main camera is more powerful and, thanks to the 8 megapixel camera, allows you to take pictures with a resolution of 3264X1836. The camera has good sharpness, and the image digitization algorithms used in the device allow you to take good photographs. The 1.9MP selfie camera has a default resolution of 1280X720. The main camera allows you to shoot video at 1080p resolution. The video is saved in MP4 format. In low light conditions, an LED flash is used. It can be activated in automatic mode if the light sensor shows an extremely low level. The flash can also be activated and deactivated manually.

Battery

The Samsung Galaxy S4 Mini review would have been somewhat disappointing if it weren't for the battery of this smartphone. A modest 1900 mAh battery by today's standards, with relatively low screen power consumption, allows you to watch videos for twelve and a half hours or enjoy 3D games for a little over four hours. In this regard, the phone outperforms even some flagship widescreen models.

Conclusion

Despite the proud S4 index in the name of the smartphone, it essentially has little in common with the base model; practically only one name remains. The characteristics eloquently tell us that this is a completely different smartphone model in terms of hardware and performance. Of course, marketers made every effort to ensure that the device was sold, even giving it a flagship name, but alas, not its capabilities.

The Samsung Galaxy S4 mini smartphone is a device that combines Samsung design Galaxy S4 and Samsung Galaxy MEGA 6.3 hardware platform. On sale you can find a model with either one SIM slot or two. In this review we will look at the second option.

Design and ergonomics

When describing appearance and the ergonomics of Samsung smartphones, there is a strong feeling of déjà vu. In order not to repeat ourselves, we recommend reading the relevant sections from reviews and.

Operating system and shell

The smartphone runs on the Android 4.2.2 operating system with the latest edition of the proprietary TouchWiz shell. You can find out what both of them look like when made by Samsung from the review.

Taking into account the large amount of RAM for a dual-SIM system, there is no need to talk about the interface slowing down; it works smoothly and without delays.

Hardware platform

As was already said at the very beginning of the review, the hardware platform is similar to that installed in the Samsung Galaxy MEGA 6.3 - a single-chip system-on-chip Qualcomm Snapdragon 400 is one of the most productive that can be found in Dual SIM smartphones. Unlike MEGA 6.3 with a screen resolution of 1280x720 pixels, the S4 mini has a slightly more modest screen - 960x540 pixels. In view of all this, the benchmark results of the Samsung Galaxy S4 mini and Samsung Galaxy MEGA 6.3 are very close, but not the same.

The autonomy of the Samsung Galaxy S4 mini is another reason to praise the smartphone. In the Antutu Tester application, the dual-SIM phone scored 633 points, having worked for 3.5 hours with two SIM cards installed, one of which is registered in the 3G network. The indicator is quite good, but where top scores showed the smartphone in two-hour tests.

The sound volume of the Samsung Galaxy S4 mini speakers is average; there were no complaints about the quality of voice transmission in both directions. Similar to the sound from the speakers, there are no complaints about the sound from the headphones. It can't be called loud, but it's enough for most situations. During testing, we never had any problems with signal loss or connection interruptions.

Searching for satellites takes a few seconds; after 10-15 seconds, the smartphone detects more than 15 satellites. The data transfer speed on the Wi-Fi network is average.

Display

The Samsung Galaxy S4 mini smartphone has a 4.3-inch Super AMOLED screen with a resolution of 960x540 pixels. The dots per inch indicator is 256 PPI. The minimum display brightness is 12 cd/m², 50% brightness corresponds to 127 cd/m², maximum value equals 313 cd/m². The indicators are not bad, but no more. Brightness can be adjusted manually, or rely on automatic adjustment.

Camera

The model is equipped with two cameras, 8 MP main and 2 MP front. The main one allows you to record Full HD video, while the front one is limited to a resolution of 1280x720 pixels. The cameras did not present any surprises; the quality of photos and videos can be assessed using the examples below.
