Service manual apc back ups rs 800. Overview of uninterruptible power supply APC Back-UPS RS800

The name of the ARS company is even subconsciously associated with the concept of "source uninterruptible power supply". Perhaps this is due to the fact that the manufacturer has a rather long history, and one of the first UPSs on our market was just APC. These sources traditionally have a rather high price compared to other brands, but their quality is an order of magnitude higher "The company is trying to supply the end user with a complete product that is competently implemented both in hardware and in the software part. The range of APC products is very wide, ranging from modest home products to advanced power plants for server stations. We, following our concept , we try to talk mainly about budget solutions designed for ordinary people. Today we will talk about the BACK-UPS RS 800VA model. This uninterruptible power supply is designed to protect one home or office computer. On the one hand, the solution is completely classic, but on the other hand, it was not without pleasant, one might say, unique additions. What? We read in the review about everything in order.

Contents of delivery

The UPS comes in a regular gray cardboard box. However, the most important thing here is not the type of box, but the quality of the packaging, with which there are no problems. Inside you can find:

  • UPS BACK-UPS RS 800VA;
  • two cables for IEC-320 C13-C14 loads;
  • interface cable;
  • telephone line protection cable;
  • protection cable local network;
  • two ties for wires with Velcro;
  • two disks with software;
  • paper instructions.

It would seem that everything is there, but where is the cord to connect the source to the network? He is not. It's not clear... Also, the logic of the implementation of the interface cable is not entirely clear: on the one hand, there is a regular USB connector, on the other, the RJ-45 network connector is crimped. It is not clear why the manufacturer does not use a standard USB cord. Firstly, if you lose such a cable, then finding a replacement will simply not be realistic. You will have to make the connector yourself, and without knowing the pinout, this is not an easy task. Secondly, an inexperienced user can easily mix up the connectors and plug the interface cable into the network protection connector. Of course, there are signatures, but why these extra "troubles"?

Appearance and design

The body of the source is made of gray high-quality plastic; high quality manufacturing. All parts fit well and do not play. On the front panel there is one single power button and four LED indicator. Such a system is quite sufficient for the implementation of a fairly competent indication and control. Although there is only one button, it allows you to turn on / off the UPS and even make some service settings. Read about it below.

At the back you can see one input connector for connecting to the network and six output connectors. Two of the six sockets are conventional sockets duplicating the mains voltage, equipped with additional filters. Filters are designed to protect equipment from impulse and high-frequency interference. The remaining four connectors are full-fledged outputs, the voltage on which does not disappear when the mains is turned off.

Here you can also see the automatic fuse and connectors for the protection of the telephone line and the protection of the local network. Next to the network connectors there is a separate grounding contact - a sign of not just good manners, but clear evidence of the real performance of the protection scheme. As mentioned above, the interface connector in the form of a power outlet is right there.

The RBC32 battery pack can be easily replaced directly by the user, as it is attached to the board via a connector. To access it, just open the plastic valve at the bottom of the structure.

Following the best traditions, the manufacturer, even with a relatively low power of 800 VA, uses two lead acid battery with thickened electrolyte СР 1270 produced by one of the leading Chinese full-cycle plants Shenzhen Center Power Tech. Co.,Ltd. Two batteries are connected in series, creating a source voltage of about 24 V. The capacity is 7 Ah, the maximum charging current is 2.8 A. The manufacturer recommends replacing every 1 ... 3 years, depending on the intensity of use, although this is most likely a necessity, not a recommendation. From a technical point of view, everything is implemented correctly, but the placement of one of the batteries "upside down" can still be considered a negative point.

We open the case and begin a detailed study of circuitry. The main components are mounted on one board without additional inserts, the assembly is of high quality. Power transistors The inverters are mounted on good radiators with good pressure against metal plates. Part of the protection of the network is placed on a separate fee. It is immediately clear that this is not a simple props, as is the case in the vast majority of cases. On the scarf you can see a large number of protective zener diodes and even one spark gap.

Transformer automatic system voltage regulation is located next to the board; standard relays with a switching current of up to seven amperes are used to switch the windings. All processors are controlled by an integrated microcontroller. The main circuits are interconnected by wires, which are assembled in bundles. Power outlets are wired with metal bars. On the one hand, the circuitry is standard, on the other hand, we see modern solution performed in compliance with all necessary rules.

Software

The UPS comes with two disks with software. One of them contains detailed documentation for the entire series as a whole, the second one contains the utility for managing and monitoring PowerChute Personal Edition version 2.0. The software was installed without problems on a PC running operating system Windows XP. During testing, it worked correctly, there are no complaints. And the functionality of the program, frankly speaking, did not let us down.

This is how a complete chronology of all processes is kept. You can see how many times the UPS switched to batteries or turned on AVR systems, thus indirectly it can be said about the quality of power in a particular area.

On the menu current state it is possible to observe the degree of battery charge, the level of input voltage, as well as the power of the load that is connected to the output.

It is possible to perform self-diagnostics with saving a record of it. Also, when replacing the battery, it will not be superfluous to make an appropriate mark in the driver.

If desired, the program can be slightly configured, adjusting it for a specific user.

There are quite interesting feature setting the logic of operation when the power is turned off. The source can be configured for maximum output (the PC will be turned off automatically when the estimated operating time is less than 5 minutes) or immediately to save battery power. Why the latter was done is a little unclear, because the energy is intended to keep the machine running.

There is simply an amazing shutdown function sound signals. For everyday work, this is not important, but in the process of testing it is simply necessary, since annoying sounds are very annoying. You can create a mute profile for a specific time interval.

Adjusting the input sensitivity in the corresponding menu is useful for adapting the UPS to a specific type of network. By default, the medium level is selected.

And finally, the most interesting feature. Switching thresholds when the input voltage changes can be set manually directly from the computer. In other words, it is possible to adjust the logic of the automatic voltage regulation system. It is not clear why the upper limit of 264 V is selected by default for a 230 V network! Therefore, when installing a new source, we immediately recommend using this function and immediately lowering the upper limit.

So, the software is quite competent and friendly. I especially liked the ability to manually set the AVR trigger thresholds, I didn’t like the only thing I didn’t like was the lack of the ability to send a message via the local network to the administrator about the loss of mains voltage, and indeed the complete absence of network functions.

Tehát a szerkezetbe akkut helyezve, a mellékelt jutubos filmhez egyezően viselkedik. Remelem elegséges a hiba eszlelesehez. :) :) Mindenkinek köszönöm a segitseget!

One of the UPS models currently on the market and offered to us for review is APC's Back-UPS RS800 solution. The model has an output power of 540 W, which allows it to be used to protect both individual workstations and small (home) servers from short-term power outages in the main supply network.

Appearance, delivery set

On the front panel of the UPS there are: a button to turn the device on / off and 4 LED indicators showing the operating modes - “UPS operation from the mains”, “load power from the battery”, “overload” and an indicator signaling the need to replace the battery.

On the rear panel of the RS800 are: a power outlet for the device from the mains, two outlets with protection only against voltage surges in the network, 4 outlets for connecting the load (with battery power), a breaker, 2 RJ-45 ports (10/100BaseT) - input and output, an RJ-45 connector for connecting the control cable of the device (an adapter with a USB connector at one end and an RJ-45 connector at the other), as well as two RJ-11 sockets for connecting a modem/telephone/fax - input and output, respectively.

The vents used for passive cooling of the unit's internal components are located at the back of the top cover and at the bottom of the side panels of the UPS.

The RS800 package includes: a software kit (traditional PowerChute), a user manual, two cords for connecting a load to the UPS, a telephone cable and a patch cord.

Taking measurements

A purely resistive load with a power consumption of 400 W was connected to the RS800 to measure the voltages and determine the output voltage waveform. When the load was connected and the input voltage of the supply network was 220.4 V, the device produced 219.1 V at the output. When the input voltage decreased, the first stage of increasing the output voltage by the AVR unit began when it reached 189.5 V, while the voltage went to the load 209.7 Q. When the input voltage increased to 210.2 V, the AVR turned off, while the output voltage supplied by the UPS to the load was 209.5 V.

UPS output - 220 V (input voltage - 220 V)

When the input voltage dropped to 180.5 V, the UPS switched to powering the load from the battery, while supplying 221.2 V to the load. the voltage given to the load was 208.5 V.

With an increase in the input voltage, it was not possible to achieve a decrease in the voltage supplied to the load from the AVR, as a result, at an input voltage of 245 V, the same 245 V went to the load. measuring voltages up to 400 V, the resolution is 0.1 V, the error is 1.5% + 5 digits), however, even taking this into account, the voltage supplied by the UPS to the load seems to be quite high.

After charging the battery to 100% capacity, a 400 W load was connected to the UPS, after which the device was disconnected from the mains. The time of autonomous power supply of the load from the battery was 9 minutes 17 seconds in the case of the RS800.

UPS output - 226 V (input voltage - 0 V)

Input voltage (V)Output voltage (V)
180,5 221,2
188,6 208,5
189,5 209,7
210,2 209,5
220,4 219,1
245 245

conclusions

The device can be used in conditions with reduced (up to) or increased (not higher than those stipulated by GOST 13109-97 (adopted by the Interstate Council for Standardization, Metrology and Certification to replace GOST 13109-87) values) voltage in the main network, where there are no frequent and long-term outages voltage. With some caution, you should use this and a similar model in conditions where, when the power is turned on, no voltage above 295 V occurs in the main network. It is worth recalling that the model does not provide for connecting a number of devices to battery-powered outlets - refrigerators, copiers, etc. P. For printers and other devices that do not store or process information, two additional sockets are provided, protected only from power surges. Due to design features, when powered from the mains, the device does not produce a “pure sine wave” at the output, which must be taken into account when connected to line-interactive UPS devices for which the shape of the supply voltage is critical.

Concerning specific model, then we can say that the APC Back-UPS RS800 can be used at home and in offices to protect both workstations and to protect against voltage surges in Ethernet networks 10/100BaseT and telephone line used for data transmission. The battery backup time of the protected load suggests the possibility of using this UPS to protect small and medium-sized servers - especially since correct setting control software of the machine can not only save the data that is being worked on in a timely manner, but also correctly disconnect connected PCs.

To be continued…

An uninterruptible power supply, or as it is commonly called UPS (BACK UPS), is essentially a boost converter and Charger in one building. The device is very useful, especially for PC owners. The device can autonomously power the computer if, for some reason, the electricity is suddenly turned off. Unfortunately, the built-in battery does not allow you to power the computer for a long time, since its capacity is limited to 7 amperes (in some powerful models battery costs up to 15-20A). Let's move on to the battery itself.

In uninterruptible voltage sources, a closed helium or acid battery is used. The built-in battery is usually designed for a capacity of 7 to 8 Amperes / hour, voltage - 12 volts. The battery is completely sealed, which allows you to use the device in any condition. In addition to the battery, inside you can see a huge transformer, in this case 400-500 watts. The transformer operates in two modes -

1) as a step-up transformer for a voltage converter.

2) as a step-down mains transformer for charging the built-in battery.

During normal operation, the load is powered by filtered mains voltage. Filters are used to suppress electromagnetic and interference in the input circuits. If the input voltage becomes lower or higher than the set value or disappears altogether, the inverter is turned on, which is normally in the off state. By converting the DC voltage of the batteries to AC, the inverter powers the load from the batteries. Off-line BACK UPSs do not work economically in power grids with frequent and significant voltage deviations from the nominal value, since frequent switching to battery operation reduces the battery life. The power of Back-UPS manufactured by manufacturers is in the range of 250-1200 VA. uninterrupted voltage BACK UPS is quite complicated. you can download a large collection circuit diagrams, and below are a few smaller copies - click to enlarge.

Here you can find a special controller that is responsible for the correct operation of the device. The controller activates the relay when there is no mains voltage and if the uninterruptible power supply is on, it will work as a voltage converter. If the mains voltage reappears, the controller turns off the converter and the device turns into a charger. The capacity of the built-in battery can last up to 10 - 30 minutes, if, of course, the device powers the computer. You can read more about the operation and purpose of uninterruptible units in.

BACK UPS can be used as a backup power source, it is generally recommended that every home have an uninterruptible power supply. If an uninterruptible power supply is intended for domestic needs, then it is advisable to unsolder the signaling device from the board, it reminds that the device works as a converter, it makes a squeaking reminder every 5 seconds, and this is annoying. The output of the converter is pure 210-240 volts 50 hertz, but as for the shape of the pulses, there is clearly not a pure sine. BACK UPS can power any household appliances, including active, of course, if the power of the device allows it.
