Quite often I have to set up computers not only at work, but also for friends and acquaintances. And one of the common problems that we have to solve is the lack of sound (by the way, this happens for a variety of reasons).

Just the other day I was setting up a computer with the new Windows 8 OS, which had no sound - it turns out it was just a matter of one tick! Therefore, in this article I would like to dwell on the main points, so to speak, to write instructions that will help you with a similar problem. Moreover, most users can adjust the sound, and there is no point in paying computer specialists for this. Well, okay, this was a small digression, let’s start looking at it in order...

1. Driver setup: reinstallation, update

The first thing I do when there is no sound on the computer is to check whether the drivers are installed, whether there is a conflict, whether the drivers need updating. How to do it?

Checking drivers

First you need to go to device Manager. This can be done in different ways: through “my computer”, through the control panel, through the “start” menu. I like this one better:

Then enter the command devmgmt.msc and press Enter (see screenshot below).

In the device manager, we are interested in the “sound, game and video devices” tab. Open this tab and look at the devices. In my case (the screenshot below) shows the properties of the Realtek High Definition Audio device - pay attention to the inscription in the device status column - “ the device is working fine«.

In any case there should not be:

Exclamation marks and crosses;

Inscriptions that the devices are not working correctly or have not been identified.

If everything is not in order with your drivers, update them, more on that below.

Required when there is no sound on the computer, when there is a driver conflict or old ones do not work correctly. In general, of course, it is best to download drivers from the official website of the device manufacturer, but this is not always possible. For example, the device is very old, or the driver for the new Windows OS is simply not listed on the official website (although it exists on the Internet).

There are actually hundreds of programs for updating drivers (the best of them have been disassembled).

For example, I often use the Slim Drivers () program. It is free and has a huge database of drivers, making it easy to update all the drivers in the system. An Internet connection is required to operate.

2. Setting up Windows OS

When the driver problems are resolved, I move on to setting up Windows (by the way, the computer needs to be restarted before doing this).

2) The second thing you need to do is click on the sound icon (in the lower right corner next to the clock on the taskbar) - the green bar should “jump in height”, showing how it plays the melody (movie). Often the sound is turned down to minimum...

If the bar jumps and there is still no sound, go to the Windows Control Panel.

As you can see in the picture below, I have the Windows Media application running (in which the movie is playing) and the sound is turned up to maximum. Sometimes it happens that the volume is turned down for a specific application! Be sure to check this tab. The computer incorrectly detected the connected devices and “sent” the sound to the wrong one from which it was expected to play! When I changed the checkbox to another device and made it the default sound playback device, everything worked 100%! And because of this checkbox, my friend has already tried a dozen drivers, visiting all the popular sites with drivers. He says he was already ready to take the computer to the technicians...

If, by the way, you don’t know which device to choose, just experiment, select “speakers” - click on “apply”, if there is no sound - the next device, and so on until you check everything.
