Why doesn't siri work on iPhone 7. What is Siri and how does it work? Siri features. How to remove Siri suggestions

Recently, voice assistants have increasingly penetrated our daily lives. Most users of the iPhone and other Apple products are familiar with one of them - Siri, but few understand all the prospects of virtual assistants and know how to use all their capabilities and functions.

What is a voice assistant

Imagine, your devoted friend is always next to you, who is ready to talk to you at any time of the day or night, answer any of your questions and carry out instructions. At the same time, he never gets tired, he is never in a bad mood, and every day he becomes smarter and understands you better. These are voice assistants that are available for everyday use today.

Voice assistants are built into computers, tablets, phones, smartwatches, smart speakers, and even cars. It is important to understand that interaction with the voice assistant is carried out exclusively by voice, without using your hands, without pressing any buttons. This is a fundamentally new way of interaction between a person and a program, which is very similar to communication between people.

  • Siri from Apple.
  • Google Assistant Google company.
  • Alexa from Amazon.
  • Alice from Yandex.

We have already written about and, and in this article we will talk in detail about Siri.

Voice assistant Siri

Siri is a voice assistant that was the first to support the Russian language, and only then did the domestic one appear, released at the end of 2017, and even later in the summer of 2018 it spoke Russian. Siri recognizes Russian speech quite well, even if music is playing nearby or there are extraneous noises.

Siri on iPhone SE

Siri wasn't always owned by Apple. Initially, it was a separate application in the App Store for iOS. In 2010, Apple acquired Siri Inc. and their unique development. Shortly after the purchase, Apple built Siri into the iPhone 4S and then into its subsequent devices. Then, in 2011, Siri became the first product on the personal voice assistant market.

Siri adapts to each user individually, studies his preferences and begins to better understand his “master.” This is primarily noticeable in the improvement of your voice recognition after the first weeks of use. You can also tell Siri how to address you and the names of your contacts in your address book, so it can understand you better. And when Siri pronounces names incorrectly, you can always correct her and show her the correct accent.

Siri is available on iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple Watch, Apple TV, and in almost all modern cars via CarPlay. The way you launch Siri and the list of available commands varies depending on your device.

How to launch Siri on iPhone, iPad and iPod touch

Launch by pressing the Home button

Siri is available on all iPhones starting with iPhone 4s and running iOS 5 and higher. To launch Siri on an iPhone (excluding iPhone X), you need to press and hold the center Home button.

To launch Siri on iPhone X, you need to press and hold the side button.

After the beep, you can make a request. On some devices, you must wait for Siri to appear on the screen before giving a command.

Hey Siri - How to enable Siri with your voice

Siri can be launched solely using your voice, without pressing any buttons at all. All you have to do is say, “Hey Siri.” After the sound signal, you can ask a question or give a command.

To do this, the “Hey Siri” function must be activated on the device: Settings → Siri and search → Listen to “Hey Siri”.

On all iPhone models, starting with the iPhone 6s, as well as on the iPad Pro, this function can be used at any time by saying “Hey Siri” so that the gadget’s microphones can pick it up. On earlier iPhones and iPads, the always-listening feature only works when your device is connected to a charger.

How to enable Siri on headphones

Using an original Apple headset with remote control buttons or compatible Bluetooth headphones, you can activate Siri by pressing the center button or the call button. After the beep, you can make a request.

Using Apple's AirPods to launch Siri twice touch the outer surface of any earphone.

Siri on Mac

Siri is available on Mac computers running macOS 10.12 Sierra and later versions of the operating system. However, at the moment the functionality of the voice assistant on the Mac is limited. All Siri can do here is make FaceTime calls, write messages, play music, show the weather forecast and help you work with files and folders.

Siri on Mac

It is worth noting that working with files on a computer using a voice assistant is really convenient. Siri can quickly search for files, sort them by type, date or keyword. For example, if you tell Siri, “Show me my photos from yesterday,” a folder with the corresponding media files will open.

There are several ways to activate Siri on Mac:

There will likely be more commands for Siri in future versions of macOS, including commands for HomeKit. This would be a logical continuation of Apple's integration of voice assistant into its laptops and desktops.

Siri functions

Siri, a personal assistant, can answer questions, make recommendations, and carry out commands. Let's look at some of them.

This is just a small part of everything that Siri can do. You can see more commands in our article on commands for Siri. You will find a complete list of commands for the voice assistant in iPhones and Home Pod smart speakers in our reference mobile application, which we regularly update. You can download the Siri Commands app for free. By installing it, you will always have the most up-to-date list of commands for your voice assistant at hand.

"Hey Siri!" Ridiculously easy to use. You literally just say, “Hey Siri,” to begin your interaction with the voice assistant.

  1. Be within range of your iPhone or iPad.
  2. Say "Hey Siri!" Loud enough for your iPhone or iPad to hear.
  3. Tell Siri what you want to do: “Call Mom,” “Buy train tickets,” “What’s the weather like in Bermuda?” and so on.

Start speaking with a command or question.

If you have an iPad or iPhone (iPhone 4S or later, iPad 3 or later, all generations of iPad mini, and iPod touch 5th generation or later), you can launch Siri in one of the following ways:

  • Hold the Home button.
  • Hold the control button on the headphones.
  • Say "Hey Siri."
  • When you ask Siri, the background should blur, you'll hear a ringtone and "How can I help you?" will appear on the screen.
  • You should also see a wavy white line at the bottom of the screen.
  • Speak your request into iPad or iPhone.
  • When you finish speaking, the white line will turn into a round microphone icon.
  • Siri should return to you with the answer (although sometimes Siri accepts multiple options).

On older iPhones (up to iPhone 6), you'll be able to use Hey Siri when you're connected to a power source. You will also need an internet connection to use Siri.

Since the iPhone X doesn't have a Home button to call Siri, you'll need to:

  • Hold down the Power button (also known as the On/Off button).
  • Say “Hey Siri.”

How to use Siri on Apple Watch

  • Press and hold the button.
  • Say “Hey Siri”

How to edit a question or Siri command

If Siri listens to you, you made a mistake in a question, or you just changed your mind, the easiest way is to press the microphone icon and ask Siri the question/command again. However, if you want to edit the original question or command, you can do that too. This can come in handy when Siri doesn't understand a name or unique word.

  1. Press and hold the Home button on your iPhone or iPad or say "Hey Siri" to activate Siri.
  2. Dictate your request.
  3. Click on the text on the screen to edit it.
  4. Make the changes you want, and then click Done in the bottom right corner of your keyboard.

What can Siri do on iPhone and iPad?

Siri is the digital assistant built into your iPhone, iPad, Apple TV, Apple Watch or Mac. You can ask Siri to do something and your iPhone will do it, instead of doing a lot of extra steps just tell Siri.

Siri is constantly improving: it has become faster and more reliable than ever with iOS 7, and in iOS 7.1 it received new features, iOS 8 added a musical “Hey Siri!” voice activation and real-time feedback of what you say to Siri. Then, with iOS 9, Apple introduced more new features.

Siri is a special assistant that helps you work with your phone. The program is capable of performing various operations. First of all, this concerns typing and searching for the necessary information. We'll talk about how to use the program on an iPhone next.

Using the program

To launch this program, you need to go to “Settings”, select the “General” section and then click “Siri”. Here you need to check the connection of the function. To use the application online, you must make sure that data transfer is turned on.

You can access the program in several ways:

  • The standard “Home” button - you need to hold it until the program asks the phone owner a question about how it can help you. After this, you need to ask a question or task.
  • “Hey Siri” – Plug your phone into a charger and then say “Hey Siri” before asking. On models starting from the 6-series, a charging connection is not required.
  • Communicating through the headset with the remote control - you need to hold the button in the center or call. When the phone beeps, ask a request.
  • In a car with support for the Without Looking or CarPlay function, press and hold voice call on the steering wheel and ask a request. On the screen, you can press the "Home" button or sound wave.

The program can be used for dictation for a maximum of half a minute.

To change the program voice, you need to go to “Settings”, find “General”, click “Siri” and go to the “Male/Female” section. voice". If you need to change the language, then in the same section you need to click “Language” and select the appropriate option from the list that appears.

If an app isn't working, the first thing you need to do is make sure it's enabled. In certain cases, the program will apologize and report that there are problems with the network connection, and may also ask you to repeat the request. After this you will need to check the connection. In certain cases, the application may resume working after a reboot. You can also try disabling Siri and launching it again. Try the program with a headset; if it only works with headphones, then most likely there are problems with the microphones of the gadget.

Sometimes when you press the Home key, the application does not make any sounds. It must be remembered that it is the sound signal on the device that indicates that the application can be asked commands or questions. On phones with an operating system of the ninth series and later, a vibration signal is triggered, and the sound signal is heard only through the headset.

Siri is a unique voice assistant built into modern iOS devices. The main feature of this personal assistant is its integration into most applications. Simply put, at the user’s request, Siri can not only find this or that information on the Internet, but also, say, set an alarm, create a new note, etc.

However, there are still workarounds for installing the assistant on “stale apples”.

In this article we will tell you how to enable and configure Siri on devices that officially support working with the assistant and how you can launch the assistant on gadgets on which it seems to not be able to function. Plus, let's talk about some worthy alternatives to Siri.

Siri support is available for iPhone 4S and later, iPad 3, 4, the entire iPad Air line, iPad Mini, iPad Pro, as well as iPod Touch fifth and sixth generations and all Apple Watches.

Moreover, if the above-mentioned gadgets have iOS 8.3 and later versions of the platform installed, Siri can speak Russian.

How to enable Siri on officially supported devices?

That's all, you have activated the assistant - now, in order to voice your voice message to him, the assistant must be launched. To do this, press and hold the Home button for a couple of seconds - the Siri interface will open - this means that the assistant is ready to listen, answer questions and carry out commands.

As we said above, you can require the assistant to both find something on the Internet - for example, by saying: “Siri, find the nearest sushi bar” and to perform a specific function in a particular application by commanding: “Siri, turn on the camera” .

By the way! If your device has iOS.8 and later versions of the platform installed, you can call the assistant with the phrase “Hey Siri,” even if the device is locked. To do this, you need to activate the corresponding option in the voice assistant menu. This feature will be very useful to you if, for example, you are driving. Just say “Hey Siri,” wait for a response, and make your request.

How to install Siri on devices that do not officially support the option?

The functionality of the voice assistant is very attractive, and therefore it is not surprising that owners of Apple devices, which were deprived of Siri support, are trying to find a way to bypass this limitation and... they find it! However, you probably won’t be surprised to learn that these methods are unofficial, which in turn means that you can’t do without jailbreaking!

For reference! Jailbreaking is an iOS hack that gives the user the ability to access private system files. The user of a jailbroken gadget can customize the i-device (including various types of officially unsupported procedures) to a wider extent than the user of an unjailbroken device. Jailbreaking is not an officially supported operation by Apple. Jailbroken iOS devices are void of warranty. An incorrectly executed jailbreak (errors can occur both due to the fault of the user conducting it and the software used for hacking) can turn the device into a “brick.”

Thus, you first need to jailbreak the device, and then you can try to install Siri on it. At the same time, the procedure for jailbreaking and installing the assistant will differ depending on the model of the device you own and the version of iOS installed on it, and therefore we need to take some example as a basis. Well, let's say we own a second-generation iPad, and it has iOS 7.1 on board.

How to jailbreak?

For iPad 2 iOS 7.1. Jailbreak should be performed according to the following scheme:

After the second reboot, the “Pangu” icon will change to “Cydia”, which means the jailbreak was successful and you can start using the device!

Important! The instructions are also suitable for iPad 3.4, iPad mini+mini Retina, iPad Air, iPhone 4/4S, 5/5C/5S, fifth generation iPod Touch with iOS 7.1, 7.1.1 or 7.1.2!!!

How to install Siri?

So, the jailbreak is done, which means it’s time to try installing Siri on our iPad 2 (for the first and second generation iPad, as well as for the iPhone 3GS/4, the instructions below will also work):

What to do if Siri does not respond or gives an error?

You probably noticed that before the instructions we said - don’t let’s install Siri, but let’s try (!). This cautious word was used because the unofficial procedure for installing the proprietary iOS assistant is fraught with pitfalls.

Why is everything so difficult? Because Siri accesses Apple servers, that is, for it to work correctly, you need a so-called authorization key or Siri certificate. In our instructions, we suggest downloading this key from the link siriport.ru/1.crt, but its functionality at the time of reading is not guaranteed.

What should you do if you call Siri and encounter an error? First, try repeating the procedure several times with an interval of 2-3 minutes. If your assistant stubbornly refuses to cooperate, do this:

  • Go to “Settings”, click “SiriPort.Ru Original” (or SiriPort.Ru Russian), then in the “Apple or SiriPort” section, tap “Apple (for catch a key)”.
  • Reboot your device.
  • Go to “Settings”/ “SiriPort.Ru Original” again and now in the “Apple or SiriPort” field select "SiriPort (for use Siri)".
  • Reboot again.
  • And again in “Settings” / “SiriPort.Ru Original” , tap “Install Certificate”.

Now our iPad will “catch” the key generated by the iPhone 4S (this process is performed automatically and is not initiated by the user of the device). Your task is to activate Siri every 5 minutes and hope that it will catch this key, only then will the voice assistant respond. The more iPhone 4S users around you, the greater your chances of success. Lucky people catch the key on the first try, and some cannot get it for weeks. But! If your friends have a jailbroken iPhone 4S, you will be saved from this lottery. Is this your case? Then:

  • Connect your iPhone 4S to your PC, use any file manager to go to “var/mobile/Library/Preferences”, copy the file “com.apple.assistant.plist” to your computer.
  • Disconnect iPhone 4S and connect your device, copy the file “com.apple.assistant.plist” from PC to device - folder “var/mobile/Library/Preferences”.

Unfortunately, this path also does not guarantee that Siri will answer on the first try, but there is still a chance of an answer, since you got a guaranteed working key with the iPhone 4S.

Instead of the result: alternatives to Siri

As you can see, installing Siri on devices that do not officially support working with the assistant is fraught with a lot of difficulties. That's why, before deciding on such a serious procedure as jailbreaking, and then spending weeks trying to find the key, we suggest you think about an alternative. There are a lot of alternative voice assistants today, and it is a mistake to believe that Siri is indispensable. Take a closer look at the Dragon series of applications - Dragon Dictation and Dragon Search - the applications are available in the official App Store and everything you need to install them is on board your Apple gadget iOS version 4.0 and older. The applications are free and support the Russian language.

Dragon Dictation and Dragon Search have slightly different specializations - the latter will help you find any information on the network, and the first can record certain messages under your dictation. How to write a new note using the application? Launch it, tap the record button and dictate everything you want - then all you have to do is copy what you recorded and paste it into any program!

Another great alternative to Siri is the Sara app, but it is only available for jailbroken devices. To download it you need:

  • Go to “Cydia”, tap the “Manage” tab, then “Sources”.
  • In this section, click “Edit”, then “Add” and enter – “http://isoftjsc.com“
  • Now tap “Add Source” and in a new window select the version for your device.
  • After downloading the application, reboot the device.

Sara has excellent functionality - it supports working with instant messengers and social networks, launches applications, scans and recognizes text, searches for videos on Youtube, etc.

Of course, no voice assistant currently has such cool integration into applications as Siri, that is, “goodies” such as launching the camera and setting an alarm on command are not available on alternative assistants, at least at the moment. But we seriously suggest that you think about alternatives, at least download and use them for a while. And if you realize that all this is not right, and Siri is vital for you, decide to jailbreak and install a native assistant. We wish you good luck in this difficult task!

When you first set up a new iPhone or iPad, you will be prompted to configure the " Hey Siri!" If you agree to this, the function will be activated immediately. Otherwise, the function can always be configured later.

It is worth noting that the guys from their competitors spotted this function ( "Okay Google").In this article I will tell you which Apple devices support this function and how to configure it.

With the help of the Siri voice assistant, almost any user of iPhone (4s and higher), iPad (from iPad3 and higher, as well as all devices of the iPad mini line), iPod touch 5g and Apple Watch can make a call, set an alarm, write using their voice message or even dictate a text. In earlier versions of iOS, you had to hold down the “Home” button to do this, but now you just need to say the phrase “ Hey Siri!"(the feature was added in iOS 9 and also works on later firmware versions). But even here there are some nuances.

You can call Siri using your voice only if your device is connected to a power source. But this does not apply to top gadgets such as the iPhone 7, iPhone 7 Plus, iPhone 6s, iPhone 6s Plus, iPhone SE and iPad Pro (9.7 inches, by the way, this is the only Apple tablet that can do this), which almost always respond to the command " Hey Siri!» and fulfill your request. Why did I say "almost always"? The problem is that if you keep the device in your pocket or it is lying with the display down, then the protection against false calls is triggered.

How to activate the " Hey Siri!» on iPhone, iPod touch and iPad?

1.Go to the menu “ Settings» → « Basic» → « Siri»

2.Enable the function " Hey Siri! ", moving the desired toggle switch to the green position.

3.We will be asked to click the “set up” button and repeat a series of simple expressions after the assistant to better remember the owner’s voice, so that in the future other people will not be able to activate Siri on your device.

After the settings have been made, calling Siri will not be difficult.

I would like to draw the attention of owners of top-end devices that allow you to call Siri without connecting to a charger - this will reduce battery life.
