What toner is used in laser printers. All the secrets of the toner. What it is

Classmates

Toner is a coloring powder with special properties used to create images in some digital and laser printing methods.

The toner consists of microscopic granules.

Components of toner granules

The toner granule consists of a core, a polymer shell and various additives.

The core is made of paraffin, which, when heated in the printer's fuser, melts and acts as a lubricant, preventing the sheet of paper from sticking to the fixation rollers.

The polymer shell is a kind of protractor for the remaining toner particles. It binds them into a single whole, gives them the ability to acquire a charge and attach to a sheet of paper. Currently, polyester and styrene-acrylic polymers are used in the production of toner.

In order for the toner particles to acquire a positive or negative charge, a charge regulator (Charge Control Agent or CCA) is mixed into the polymer base. Nitrogen dyes or organic acids are used to give the toner a negative charge, and nigrosine dyes and quaternary salts are used to obtain a positive charge.

The toner contains particles of iron oxide (magnetide), which provide its magnetic properties. For toners used in single-component magnetic development systems, the inclusion of a magnetide is mandatory, as it ensures the correct functioning of the system. In one-component non-magnetic development systems, the magnetide performs only one function: it reduces the dustiness of the toner. Therefore, its specific weight in such systems is insignificant.

To give the toner the properties necessary for its thermal fixation on paper, modifiers are included in the microgranules. Modifiers provide the necessary softening temperature of the toner and give the image gloss. Polypropylene, polyethylene, wax or other additives can be used as modifiers.

Since the polymers used in the production of toners are colorless, coloring pigments are added to them. To obtain a black color, magnetide is included in magnetic toners, and carbon black is included in non-magnetic toners. To obtain a color other than black, inclusions of dyes of the corresponding color are included in the polymers. The pigment is evenly distributed over the surface of each toner particle. Its mass is no more than 10% of the mass of the granule.

In order for the toner to be easily transferred to the image drum, it must have electric charge and fluidity. To achieve the indicated properties, the toner contains surface additives (agents) in the form of polymers or amphora silicon dioxide.

Figure 2 shows a magnified image of a toner granule taken using a microscope. Figure 2 clearly shows the rounded “body” of the granule and the additives embedded in it.

The average size of toner granules is from 5 to 30 microns. The smaller and more uniform the granules, the less their abrasive effect and the higher the resolution, density and print quality.

Toner is a composite material that has no chemical formula. The elements that make up the toner must comply with the requirements of specifications or GOSTs for this type materials, as well as a passport, technical acceptance certificate, quality certificate and hygienic certificate.

Unfortunately, the chemical composition and physical properties of toner cannot be assessed with the naked eye. To obtain full description properties of the toner, it is necessary to examine it under a microscope, evaluate the shape of the granules, the spread of their sizes, fluidity, humidity, productivity and other parameters (more than 100 in total).

Laser printers are widely used in home and office use due to their low maintenance costs. This benefit is achieved due to the fact that the cartridges of these devices can be repeatedly refilled with a special substance - toner. It is this that determines the main advantage of laser printers over inkjet printers.

What is printer toner and its composition

Printer toner is a powdery substance that is used in laser cartridges, necessary for printing and copying. By color, this consumable can be presented in one of four options: black, red, blue or yellow. During the printing process, its small particles mix with each other, transmitting any shades on paper. Such powders are produced in specialized laboratories from polymers and dyes and are used to operate and refill cartridges for printers, copiers and other equipment.

Why is toner used?

In fact, toner acts as ink in a laser printer. It fills the printing cartridge, which is necessary to transfer text or pictures onto paper. For normal operation monochrome printer Only one black cartridge is used, which is enough to reproduce various shades of gray on paper. Color printers use cartridges of all four colors, which, when mixed in different quantities, allow you to obtain a high-quality full-color image.

Using toners for refilling cartridges allows you to significantly reduce costs every page printed because it is much cheaper than permanent shift the cartridges themselves. Despite the fact that cartridges are refilled under special conditions by professionals, this process takes very little time and, as a rule, does not greatly affect performance.

Main features of consumables

Toners have some features that they need to ensure high-quality printing. The smallest particles of the substance have the ability to become highly electrified in order to adhere to charged areas on the surface of the printer's photodrum. In addition, for high-quality application and fixation on paper, the material must be fusible and susceptible to temperature changes.

Types of toner

These powder paints are classified into different kinds depending on certain parameters such as composition, compatibility and type of manufacture.

Compound

The composition of the toner can be magnetic or non-magnetic. To impart magnetic properties to the powder, special magnetic components are added to its composition. As a rule, these components can only be black, which means that colored types cannot be manufactured in this way. The difference between the magnetic one is that it itself is transferred to the drum using a magnetic shaft. Non-magnetic types do not have this possibility and enter the drum through a special auxiliary medium.

Compatibility

According to the compatibility parameter there are original or compatible toners. Original materials are produced individually for each model of printing devices by the companies that develop the printers themselves, which is a guarantee of quality work. Compatible ones are manufactured by third-party suppliers and are not always tied to specific models. In this situation, the quality of the product is directly expressed in its cost. The compatibility parameter plays an important role for the durability and serviceability of printing equipment. Serious laboratories for refilling cartridges most often prefer to work with original materials from the manufacturer, and some users who prefer to refill themselves sometimes purchase compatible inks and are also satisfied.

As an example, here is a table of compatibility of toner brands for popular cartridges:

Manufacturing type

In this case, there are two types of coloring powders: those made using chemical synthesis or mechanical. If the first method involves complex chemical interactions, then the second consists of simply mixing all the components with further processing with a press under the influence of high temperatures. In practice, it is difficult to notice the difference between toners manufactured using different technologies. This does not in any way affect the quality of the finished images.

How does a toner cartridge work?

The operation of laser printers is based on the use of technology photoelectric xerography. The main functional link in such a device is the photodrum, on which charged areas corresponding to the printed image are determined using a laser. The cartridge serves as a device for transferring coloring powder to a medium. The rubber shaft of the cartridge evenly directs the toner to the drum, where it is distributed and secured using its ability to electrify. A special “oven” “bakes” the substance onto the paper at high temperature, thus resulting in a clear, durable image.

When there is little toner left in the cartridge, unlike inkjet printers, laser notifies the user with a message - there is no toner in the printer or similar.

Advantages and disadvantages

In addition to the low cost of the printing process, an important advantage of laser printers is high speed print. The use of these devices allows you to achieve good performance and continuously process a large number of documents, without losing the quality of the final prints. One cartridge refill is enough to ensure long-term uninterrupted operation, which is quite beneficial in terms of time and money.

The main disadvantage of this technology is that it is more low print quality, compared to inkjet counterparts. Even the most expensive laser models will not be able to reproduce the color of a photo 100% deeply. Thus, laser technology is most suitable for use in home and office environments, and for professional work with full-color photographs, it is best to purchase inkjet devices.

Harmful toner

The smallest particles of toner substance pose a certain danger to the human body. They can easily enter the respiratory tract and cause harm to health, since the powder consists of harmful chemicals (the most popular Carbon Black powder, for example, contains iron and carbon oxides, which, when inhaled, settle in the lungs). In addition, allergies, chronic cough, asthma, etc. may occur.

Any interaction with this material implies strict adherence to safety precautions, namely, the use gloves and respiratory mask, the possibility of high-quality ventilation of the room and the presence of a special vacuum cleaner to remove excess substances. It is best not to try to refill the cartridge at home, but to entrust it to professionals.

What is toner in a home or office printer and what is it used for? Nowadays, there is a printing device in almost every home and/or office.

This is a complex mechanism consisting of many parts, the purpose of many of which is not clear to the user.

However, it is knowledge about the purpose and operating principle of the parts and components of devices that will allow the user to service the device and independently troubleshoot problems that arise without resorting to service.

Definition

Simply put, we can conclude that the printer prints using ink. This paint is presented in the form of a powder of one shade or another. This powder is called toner.

It is used in laser printers– the actual printing cartridges are refilled with it, it comes in black and color.

In black and white, only black is used, in color - several basic shades of powder (yellow, pink, blue), from which the desired shades are combined.

At the same time, only one cartridge works in monochrome printing devices, and all four work in full-color ones.

Obsolete types had tiny grains of a faceted structure. But it was found that this form leads to faster wear of the printing mechanism and is impractical. It has been replaced by powders with rounded or spherical grains, which allow not only the printing mechanism to wear out less, but also allow for more accurate transmission and gradation of colors and shades, and in general, increase.

Peculiarities

Powders of this type have a number of features and characteristics that are important to consider when working with them.

This will ensure greater safety during operation and more high quality print. The following features are available:

  • The powder is dangerous to humans if inhaled, and it becomes safe only when it is heated in the printer to an acceptable temperature;
  • When working with toner (for example, refilling cartridges), you must wear a respirator and latex gloves;
  • The room in which the powder is stored must be well ventilated, for example, it can be equipped with an air conditioning system;
  • The substance must be heated until (for most types of paints) - only at this temperature does melting begin and its adhesion to the paper.

Especially Do not neglect safety precautions when working with this powder. It is indeed capable of having a fairly pronounced negative effect on the body when it enters the lungs and respiratory tract.

Kinds

Such paints (powders) are various types. They differ in composition, operating principle, quality and various other parameters.

By composition

The composition stands out two main types:

    Magnetic toner– such powder interacts directly with the magnetic shaft in the printer, that is, no intermediary mechanisms are needed for transfer to the printing drum itself. This is the most modern and preferred form of paint, however, it is not suitable for everyone, although more often the opposite is true - non-magnetic powder cannot be used in certain types of printers;

    Non-magnetic toner does not contact the magnetic shaft by itself. It is transferred to the printing drum by a developer or a special auxiliary mechanism. If there is no such auxiliary mechanism in the printing device, then the powder is not suitable for it, since it will not be able to function.

It is important to take this data into account both when purchasing the device itself and when purchasing the powder.

Compatibility

In addition, there are two types of powders based on compatibility.

This is an important parameter that any user needs to know, since only in this case he will be able to select cartridges for his printing device:

    Original- these are those that are made specifically for specific model the same company as the device itself. They are refilled with the same original cartridges;

    Compatible- These are more universal compositions that are produced by certain companies. Such powders usually fit several device models and are of lower quality overall;

    Incompatible- these are those that cannot work with the printer model being discussed.

Usually, the type of toner, as well as the models to which it is suitable, are indicated directly on the packages of cartridges. Therefore, there should not be any special problems with the choice.

By type of manufacture

Quite interesting is the division of such powders by type of production. Total allocated two types of production:

    Chemical synthesis– this is used for production by emulsion spraying, polyester polymerization or others. The result is a powder of the desired shade, with the appropriate characteristics, completely synthetic in nature;

    Mechanical method involves mixing all components until a homogeneous mass, and then pressing them in a special chamber under the influence of high temperatures. The briquettes that are obtained after this are processed and directly prepared into powder. It is then sorted, separating only those particles whose size is less than 7 microns, because only they are suitable for use as paint.

There is no particular difference in which method was chosen for the powder in a particular printer.

When printing, it is almost impossible for a non-specialist (and sometimes even a specialist) to distinguish such paints from each other.

The quality of the print, color rendition and other features are not affected by the method of obtaining the paint.

Principle of operation

How exactly does the device, and therefore the toner in it, work? The laser unit or receives an image from the computer screen that needs to be printed.

After this, it is transferred to the image transfer unit, with the help of which the picture that needs to be printed is built, that is, the device’s print job itself.

This task is then transferred to a device for transferring and fixing the drawing on paper. This block is represented by a shaft that interacts with the toner and transfers it to the printing roller.

As mentioned above, when using a magnetic one, it can do this directly, and when using a non-magnetic one, it first transmits to the transfer device, and only then to the printing roller.

Advantages and disadvantages

It is those printing with toner that are currently considered the most popular and widespread types of equipment for obtaining prints.

Why are they so popular and why is toner so good? Such a device and consumables have positive aspects.

Despite a number of pronounced advantages, this powder and printers working with it also have many disadvantages. Sometimes they even pose a danger.

Table 1. Pros and cons
Flaws Advantages
It is necessary to work only in sufficiently large, well-ventilated rooms;High productivity, high speed and large volume using a minimum amount of toner;
Necessity large quantity personal protective equipment when working with powder - respirator, gloves, etc.;High quality prints even under heavy load are ensured only by such devices, while in others the print quality drops after several dozen sheets in a row;
High toxicity of the powderIt is not washed off, that is, the paint on the resulting print does not flow or blur when wet, which cannot ensure
Inconvenience of working with it due to toxicity;The cost of one print is quite low compared to analogues;
The packaging of the powder must be sealed, that is, it must be used immediately after opening, and in full.Cartridges can be recharged, which helps save additional money.

Thanks to these features, printers with it become the choice of those who are interested in high device productivity at minimal cost.

The quality when using such a powder is sufficient for printing office documents, simple images, and sometimes (although much depends on the device itself).

It is important to remember that even a very high-quality toner and a very expensive printer are not able to provide sufficiently high quality printing of color images. The technology does not provide perfect color mixing and is therefore not suitable for full-color printing. But it is quite acceptable for printing tables, diagrams, documents, and office use.

<Рис. 8 Перезарядка>

Refueling

The process of recharging the cartridge with new toner is possible, since during the operation of the device (printing) in most cases the cartridge itself is not subject to wear (or is subject to minimal wear).

It stops working because the paint runs out.

In this case, you can buy or recharge the old one (which is much cheaper).

During the recharging process it is removed protective film from the valve, the old toner spills out and the new one falls asleep. After this, the valve is sealed again.

It is believed that this method is not very favorable for the printer itself.

Any special equipment, including printers, requires professional maintenance and periodic refilling of ink cartridges.

A common printing device in this category is a laser printer that uses toner. Laser printing devices are widely in demand in companies and organizations working with large volumes of documentation.

What it is

Toner is a low-melting, finely dispersed substance (powder), manufactured in the laboratory from a special polymer material and intended for use in laser printer cartridges and copiers.

Initially, toner powder was obtained by grinding the starting material into faceted particles. As a result of experiments, more convenient types of spherical particles were obtained.

Modern particles of matter have rounded contours. A substance of this form provides the best clarity of the resulting image, color gradation and smoothness of shades, and also prevents rapid wear (abrasion) of the printing mechanism of the equipment.

What kind of toner is there?

Toner can be:

Typically, qualities of the first type are present only in black filler.

Powder for cartridges is divided into the following types:

  • original;
  • compatible.

The first type is produced for a specific specific model of printing machine by its manufacturers. Manufacturers provide a guarantee not only for the printing device, but also for the powder, as a consumable material of original quality.

The compatible option includes samples manufactured by third parties for use in brand-name printers.

Universal compatible toner may be referred to as licensed toner. Often the cost of the powder is an indicator of quality. The compatibility indicator is important for the normal operation of the printing device. The filler is available in four colors: black, cyan (blue), yellow, red (purple). This color scheme

is called CMYK (based on the first characters of English notation). Monochrome samples work using cartridges of only one color (black), while full-color devices use all 4 colors.

Advantages and disadvantages

  • Among the advantages of laser printing technology is its incredible printing speed. This indicator is important for consumers interested in high productivity of the device.
  • Laser printers can withstand enormous loads without affecting the quality of text documents. The resulting text retains richness and clarity, as well as indelibility due to the use of a special toner for cartridges. A fully refilled cartridge is enough for a significant number of copies text document

, and after the ink is exhausted, the cartridge can be refilled. Thanks to this technology, the cost of a print is low.

Photo: original Xerox toner cartridge

  • The disadvantages of laser devices and cartridges include the inability to print high-quality color images even on the most expensive models.
  • This means that powder printers cannot reproduce the number of colors in a design, their depth and saturation. Therefore, for full-color printing, an inkjet analogue is preferable.
  • Toner poses a great danger to human health. Microscopic particles of powder easily penetrate the body through the respiratory tract simultaneously with air (during breathing).

Interacting with it when refilling cartridges or repairing printing devices requires strict adherence to safety precautions, the use of a filtering respirator and a special toner vacuum cleaner.

The substance is sold in hermetically sealed bottles (jars) or bags. You cannot purchase the substance in bulk form or in packaging that is not sealed properly.

The operation of the laser printer is based on the photoelectric principle of xerography, providing for the presence of certain elements of the device:

  • scanning unit (laser);
  • image transfer devices;
  • element for fixing the image.

The image transfer device is usually a cartridge and a charging transfer roller. Some models use cheaper LED scanning instead of laser scanning.

The main element of a laser printer is a rotating selenium drum coated with a photoconductive semiconductor, which is responsible for transferring the image onto paper. During printing, the surface is fed high voltage, which distributes the static charge over the entire surface of the drum.

Next, the laser discharges parts on the drum in which an image should be formed for transfer to paper. The drum rolls over the toner, which adheres to the areas charged by the beam. The electrified paper sheet, under the influence of high temperature equal to the melting point of the toner, moves between the rollers and the drum, attracting particles of the ink element.

Laser printer toner compatibility chart

Color laser printing devices are a set of monochrome printers in one housing with 4 drums and 4 cartridges. Each cartridge contains toner for a color laser printer in one of the colors. The image is formed alternately in 4 passes for each color of the CMYK model. Laser devices do not have very high speed and the high cost of color printing.

For laser devices, compatibility of fillers means the permissibility of working with consumables of the same model on different devices. There is a wide variety on the market compatible cartridges

and toners for printers of different manufacturers and models. Using an offer from another manufacturer or brand instead of one cartridge greatly simplifies the purchasing process Supplies

Printer toner allows you to get fast and high-quality results when printing texts and images, despite certain disadvantages. These characteristics have contributed to the widespread use universal device for various categories of users, making it easier to work with large amounts of text information.

When buying a new printer, many users do not even think about the cost of consumables, preferring laser printing technology for reasons of speed or the sufficiently large resources of the cartridge included in the kit.

Sooner or later, any buyer of printing equipment will run out of consumables, carefully placed in the box with the device by the manufacturer, and accordingly, the question of replacing them arises. Here the user has several options:

  1. Purchasing a new device with a set of consumables.
  2. Purchasing a new cartridge.
  3. Cartridge refilling.

Buying a new printer, of course, is an original way out of the situation, but quite stupid due to its high cost.

The best option is to purchase a new one original cartridge. This is due to the fact that almost all manufacturers strongly advise against resorting to refills and the use of compatible consumables. Unfortunately, this option is also quite expensive. Price for new cartridge for a personal printer can be 60-70% of the cost of a new device.

Many users choose to refill the cartridge. To carry out this procedure, you can contact specialized company and hope that it was performed correctly, or do this operation yourself.

If it is decided to perform the action without the help of an outside organization, refilling will require skills and the toner itself.

What is laser printer toner?

A laser printer prints text and images onto paper using a special ink mixture.

Typically, laser printer toner consists of several components. Let's list them:

  • dye;
  • binders;
  • baking powder;
  • charge carrier.

Each manufacturer produces toner for laser printers own technology, its exact composition is usually not disclosed.

Kinds

In any case, laser technology requires a special toner for printing. They can be divided into three main groups:

  • original;
  • compatible;
  • fake.

Original toner

It can be found in a branded cartridge. It is produced by the printer manufacturer directly for each device model. It is ordered from large chemical plants of well-known companies, for example TDK, Fuji.

Buy original toner for laser Samsung printer and most other brands cannot. Manufacturers of printing equipment earn much more on cartridges than on the devices themselves, and none of them wants to lose a promising market. Although there are exceptions to this rule, you can find truly original laser toner Canon printer, OKI, Lexmark.

Compatible Toner

Refilling cartridges for laser printing equipment can significantly reduce the cost of each print. For this, a so-called compatible toner is usually used.

Both large chemical companies and small suppliers are engaged in the production of compatible consumables. The latter usually purchase large quantities from toner manufacturers and simply package it in packaging equipped with their own brand. For example, compatible toner for an HP laser printer can be produced by the following companies: Uninet, Katun, Colortek, Hi-Black.

Fake toner

Some unscrupulous manufacturers and sellers relabel low-quality toner as well-known brands and try to sell it. This is a fake toner.

The packaging of counterfeit consumables may replicate the design of original or compatible products, but the quality often suffers. The jar may contain toner intended for a completely different model, manufactured in violation of technological standards, etc.

How to choose a toner?

Choosing the right toner is quite difficult due to the huge number of fakes. But even if we discard them, the choice on the market is very wide, although not all brands are of high quality.

Here are some tips to help you choose a good toner:

  1. Don't buy generic toners. Remember, they don't exist. In most cases, you will experience reduced print quality.
  2. Pay attention to the price. Too much low price well-known brands may indicate a fake. When using a cheap compatible toner, you often have to deal with quality variations between batches and other problems.
  3. Try to purchase compatible toners only from well-known manufacturers. This will avoid print quality problems and extend the life of the printer.
  4. Pay attention to the packaging location. In practice, even a well-known brand, when packaged by a distributor in Russia, does not always guarantee high quality printing.

A good toner for a laser printer guarantees high print quality, the ability to carry out 3-5 refills without problems and reliable operation of the device itself. Therefore, pay special attention to his choice and do not try to save too much.
