My task was to collect cable for HBO diagnostics on Zenit and Diego (cable pinout not suitable for STAG, +12v and Gnd need to be swapped ). I dived into the Internet and it turned out that all HBOs have a regular RS232 COM port. RS232 implies signals with amplitudes from -12 to +12 volts. And logical "1" corresponds to the level -12V, logical "0" - +12V. This is necessary for noise immunity, signals "around zero" are considered noise and are not used. There are no such signals in the block of gaseous brains. Such (or compatible) signals are (still found) in computers, but they are not in modern laptops.
In the gas control unit, the interface has output signal levels (roughly, not really) "0"=0V, "1"=5V (TTL levels). To do this, you need a TTL level converter on max232. It is this chip that is in data cables to HBO Lovato.

Very often, car owners of a car with HBO installed are faced with the need to view / correct some parameters of the gas “brains”. For this purpose, you need to have a special tester (which is very expensive and not economically feasible for private use) or you need a diagnostic tool in the form of a laptop with installed software and a cord for connecting gas "brains" and a laptop. Branded cords that are commercially available are not cheap, so you can try to make a cable for HBO with your own hands. You will also need a 3 or 4-core copper cable 3-3.5 meters long. It is advisable to use a stranded wire (so that each cable core is wound from several) - this will greatly extend the life of the finished cable in the future, due to the fact that the cores will break much less.

It is also better to buy heat shrink in the radio store (for cable insulation).

The “heart” of our cable for matching the signals of the laptop and the “brains” will be the PL2303 chip. It is best to buy not a “bare” microcircuit, but a ready-made USB to TTL module (it will contain the necessary microcircuit with the necessary additional elements soldered) in the same radio store or we order from Aliexpress. With us, this module came with a USB connector, it is best to choose just such an option, it is easier to assemble, and later such a cable for HBO will look much more aesthetically pleasing.

We collect the cable

Having prepared all the components, it remains to assemble them into a single whole. This must be done according to the diagram below.

In our case, everything is much simpler. Chinese manufacturer indicated in the documentation for the module the description of the connector and the corresponding wire color:

  • black cable - GND;
  • green - TXD;
  • white - RXD;
  • red - VCC.

Therefore, everything boiled down to crimping and soldering wires to a 4-pin connector. We used 3 wires:

Once I got a Lanos car for a couple of weeks with HBO installed (gas equipment). The machine is not new, 2002, but it drives briskly, on gasoline. As it turned out, the HBO controller communicates with the PC via the UART protocol (in the common people rx-tx. And where can I get the data cable from the mobile phone? Where was it about 10 years ago, but now? Literally at the following link, the search engine suggests making a cable from a Chinese TTL to USB whistle. I unfortunately do not have this, I use USB ISP.

As it turned out, there are no radio amateurs among motorists, which is why I posted this article. Everyone cuts cables from mobile phones, they order exactly “specialized” adapters. BUT! All modern radio amateurs know about the existence of the Arduino platform. In particular, the Arduino UNO is programmed and communicates with a PC simply via a bare USB cord, and it is via the UART protocol. Any Arduino that is sewn without a programmer, on the board of which the CH340T chip is soldered, will do.

We collect our cord on the knee. A minute of work with a soldering iron, we need to short the reset pin to the ground, thereby turning off the microcontroller and, in fact, we get the same TTL to USB. We connect wires to pins rx, tx and gnd. We are looking on the Internet for the pinout of the diagnostic connector of your HBO. I have Tamona Tgstream-PM and here is its connector (male connector):

Of course, I didn’t have such a connector. I took jumper crocodiles, “bitten” the wires from the arduino with one end, and the future plug that will be inserted into the connector with the other. The plug is an LED. Its two legs play the role of spring-loaded contacts. I isolate all nudity on hastily tape.


We shove our board into the case so that it does not short out. Well, that's it, the cable is ready!


Looking for and loading the right software. For HBO Tamona we download, for another HBO you will have to look for it yourself. We download the driver for arduina on the Chinese CH340T chip, there is a good instruction for installing it.

Now connect to the car. In the Tgstream control unit, the programming connector is combined with the control button connector. We disconnect it. first of all, turn on the ignition and look for the positive wire, find + 12V and firmly forget about it, in no case do we shove anything into it, otherwise we can even burn the laptop. +12 can be temporarily plugged with a match or a piece of toothpick, just in case. Next, we look for the ground in the connector and connect the arduino ground to it. Then we connect rx and tx in accordance with the circuit found or the method of scientific poke, they can be swapped and everything will be fine. The correct connection is indicated by a signal about established connection in the HBO setup program.


Well, that's actually the whole cable for diagnosing and programming HBO. And already look for how to set up a gas system on the Internet, here I am not an adviser to you. I can only say that, according to the tips and recommendations from the Internet, I managed to achieve excellent operation of the car on gas compared to the previous installations of crooked hands.

In the end, I spent as much as 0 money and 15 minutes of manual work on soldering and packing wires. The design does not shine with beauty, but if you need it right now and for free, then it will do. In my head, of course, the idea arose to make a normal cable. To do this, you will have to order a TTL to USB whistle and connector from China. According to the Internet, the connector comes from the fuel pump of a VAZ car.

In addition, I want to say that this cable can also be used to diagnose the car's ECU if the control unit supports the UART protocol.
