How to check whether a button works or not. Online keyboard check. The cable or port is damaged

A mechanical keyboard is the main way of entering information into a computer, especially for desktop PCs. For example, an ultrabook can use a touch keyboard if the main one fails. At the same time, the mechanical one has many shortcomings that become noticeable during use. If false clicks occur or duplicate characters occur, it is worthwhile to find out in detail the causes of the problem. This can be done using special online services and programs.

Most of the services that check the functionality of the keyboard work using the same algorithms. Basically, you just need to press keys and, if pressed, it will fixed on virtual keyboard. Duplicate characters and false clicks are checked in the same way.

Online keyboard check

One of the main advantages of online verification is that the user does not need to install special software. Next, we will take a closer look at the most popular services that allow for detailed diagnostics of mechanical buttons. The advantages and disadvantages will also be discussed, and step by step instructions on working with programs.

One of critical devices The laptop's input is the keyboard; without it, using the equipment will be difficult, and in some cases impossible. To determine which key is not working, you need to use a program to test your laptop keyboard. This software can be downloaded on the Internet or you can use online services that allow you to check quickly and efficiently.

Programs for testing laptop keyboards

To check the laptop keyboard, there are the following programs that will be offered in the list. Using these utilities, you can not only check the functionality of the key, but also determine the functionality of the color indicators, the speed of repeated presses and the internal codes of the keyboard, as well as the accuracy with which it responds to pressing, which will allow you to understand how long the laptop keyboard will last.

  1. PassMark KeyboardTest is a utility that is designed to test the functionality of not only the keyboard, but also the mouse. KeyboardTest will allow you to determine the accuracy of pressing, the speed of response to repeated pressing, as well as the performance of color indicators. This program is an interface from one main window in which the virtual keyboard is located. When you press real keys, the interface window will display full information on the operation of the key (up to the internal code).
  2. Keyboard Test Utility - great program, which allows you to check the keyboard for internal defects. Like the first program, this one consists of an interface window in which a virtual keyboard is displayed. This utility saves data on past checks, but if necessary, this information can be deleted. The program has three keyboard colors.

You can download a program for checking a laptop keyboard via a torrent or a free online downloader. Today there are enough resources suitable for this. But try to use only trusted sites.

Online services for checking the operation of the keyboard

If the user does not need to consistently check the keyboard, then you can use online programs, the functionality of which is slightly narrower, but ideal for a simple test.

  1. Keyboardtester is a convenient online service for testing your keyboard. It is a window with a virtual keyboard. When a key is pressed, a color indicator will be displayed on the key that the user selected. Also, all keys typed will be displayed in the history.
  2. Key-Test is a program with a nice and simple interface that is easy to understand for any user. Displays the pressed key, shows in color its functionality, and also saves information about previously selected keys in the history.

Finally

Checking the keyboard for functionality will not be a big problem. Just download special program and conduct diagnostics or use online services.

If you notice any oddities or abnormalities in the operation of your input device, you can do a special keyboard test using online services. Classical computer keyboard and today remains the most convenient, reliable and in a fast way entering information into a computer. Those who work every day with a mechanical keyboard would never trade it for touch tablet. Technologies have come a long way in our time, but to this day they have not yet come up with devices more convenient than a keyboard. This device, like others, periodically fails. This is manifested by failure of the keys. It also happens that a key simply gets stuck and the character is repeated several times in a row, if this is not corrected or the keyboard is not turned off.

As a rule, special online tests for diagnosing keyboards work according to one main principle. If you notice any problems and cannot find the source of the problem, diagnose your keyboard using such an online tester. When you get to the page of such a service, you can see an analogue of your keyboard with an identical key arrangement, or less often just a classic arrangement. After you press any key on your device on the monitor, the same button turns a special color. After all the keys you have tried, you will be able to identify the one that does not respond to your actions.

In the same way, similar diagnostics work for other types of key malfunctions, for example, sticking or false pressing (the entry of one pressed key is repeated twice or more). When the service detects a stuck key, you will see a corresponding notification about this in a separate window. If you have identified problems with your keyboard, it is best to replace it. Repairing this device at home is quite problematic.

Key-Test manual diagnostic service

One of the main advantages of this service is that he is Russian-speaking. Although in similar online services this criterion does not play a big role. The website key-test.ru has a nice design and a simple and understandable diagnostic service. The page does not have any additional settings - everything is very clear. There is a window where we see white keys arranged in a classic manner. For online keyboard analysis, no additional programs or no action needs to be performed. Before using the test, the site recommends using the English layout.

How this online test works to determine the health of the keyboard:

Online KeyBoard Tester will help you quickly test your keys

Online KeyBoard Tester is another easy way to check if your keyboard is working properly. The service is in English, but this is not a problem, because all you need to do is press the keys one by one. The service does not have any settings or menu buttons.

The only setting for the service is the choice between three modes for voicing key presses:

  • Click – a regular key click, similar to a natural sound.
  • Josh – pronouncing the letter of a key using your voice.
  • None – no voiceover.

To check the keys:

  1. Go to the page http://onlinekeyboardtester.blogspot.ru/p/tester.html.
  2. A window will open in front of you in which you will see a resemblance of your keyboard. The gray cyber keys are lettered according to the English layout.
  3. Press the keys one by one to test. In this case, the contours of the keys are painted green if they are working properly.
  4. The outlines of keys that work in conjunction with others (CTRL, SHIFT, ALT, etc.) are colored gray. Above the virtual keyboard there is a window in which the printed text is displayed. To reset the analysis and start again, click the “Reset” button next to the window.

KeyboardTest - offline testing of the keyboard

You can use offline keyboard testing using a special program:

  1. It can be downloaded from the link https://www.passmark.com/products/index.htm, find it in the list of programs, it is the penultimate one.
  2. Install KeyboardTest the traditional way, then click “Continue” to use the trial version for 30 days. This period is quite enough.
  3. After that, press all the keys on your keyboard in a row to determine the problems. Each key will be colored green if it is working. A yellow key means they are not being checked. If at least one key is faulty, it will turn blue.
  4. At the bottom of the program there is a “Test LEDs” button. It is designed to test the health of the LEDs on the keyboard. Click on it and they should light up.

How to care for your keyboard

If you are the owner of a comfortable, beautiful and expensive keyboard that you enjoy using, you simply must take care of it and occasionally carry out diagnostics. Moreover, this does not require much expense or effort. It is only necessary to periodically blow out the cavities between the keys with a vacuum cleaner or hairdryer. This should be done more often by those who like to eat sandwiches with tea while watching news and videos on the Internet. You can get rid of debris and crumbs by simply shaking the keyboard case. The outside of the keys also needs to be wiped periodically. It is advisable to do this with a special antibacterial agent.

If trouble does happen to your keyboard - some keys are out of order and you cannot fully work on it, you can temporarily use the on-screen keyboard, which is available in every operating room Windows system. You cannot write large texts on it, but you can perform ordinary tasks, such as entering messages on social networks and e-mail, answers in different chats, you can easily.

To open it in any OS version:

There is a way to open the on-screen keyboard in Windows faster. For this:

  1. Press WIN+R to open “Input”, you can open the command line.
  2. Write the following command in empty line"osk" and press "Enter".
  3. A keyboard will appear on the monitor in front of you.

How to diagnose and repair or replace a laptop keyboard with your own hands.

If you have a laptop rather than a desktop PC, you can't just go out and buy a new keyboard. And replacing the built-in one will be a difficult (or expensive) task. So it’s wiser to first try to find the problem and repair it yourself. And as a last resort, think about replacing the device.

If you haven't bought an external keyboard yet, buy one. Of course, this is an unequal replacement for the built-in one, but with it you can log in to the system using your password. In addition, in some cases such an external device is useful, for example, in games. After all, it is much easier to replace a broken external keyboard than to repair a built-in one.

The first thing you need to do is determine the source of the problem. That is, what is the problem: in the hardware or in software. To do this, boot through a floppy drive or flash device Live Linux. (Live Linux allows you to boot the operating environment without installing it on HDD.) And what kind Linux distribution you choose does not matter, for example Ubuntu. What is it for? This way you will work with your hardware bypassing the Windows OS.

Once you boot into Linux, launch any text application, that is, an application in which you can write text. It doesn't matter browser, notepad or text editor. For example, Ubuntu comes with LibreOffice. Try typing all the keys.

Software problem

If you can enter text on Linux but not on Windows, the problem is most likely in the driver for that device. Replace it with the original one included with the laptop.

Boot into Windows and open Device Manager. From the desktop: This PC - Properties - Device Manager.

In Device Manager, find and expand (by clicking on the arrow) the “Keyboards” section. Double click on your internal keyboard.

Attention. If you have connected an external device, make sure you click on the internal one. If you are confused, turn off the external one.

In the dialog box that opens, click on the "Driver" tab and click on the "Delete" button to remove it. Naturally, after the removal process, the device will not work. Reboot your laptop. And during reboot, Windows will automatically reinstall the original . Did this solve your problem?

Hardware problem

If only a few keys stop working, dirt and dust may be the reason. Try cleaning the keypad. You will need a can of compressed air, they are commercially available. Turn off your laptop. Clean the gaps between the keys and under the keys. Use compressed air and a thin brush or straw to do this. Concentrate on the problem keys.

If repairing your keyboard doesn't work, you'll probably need to replace it. Contact a professional, or do it yourself.

Replacing a laptop keyboard

First of all, make sure you buy the appropriate keyboard. Place it on the device and see if it is the correct shape and size. Then, prepare the necessary tools: a small screwdriver, tweezers and a knife with a thin blade.

Turn off your laptop. Not only by completing Windows operation, but also by disconnecting and removing the battery.

Pay attention to the panel between the keyboard and monitor. Most often, access to the keyboard is located under it. Carefully inspect and remove the screws holding this plate. Please note that some of its parts can be secured with small screws with reverse side devices.

Before removing the top plate, check whether there may be a data cable attached to the back of it connecting it to the laptop. This train is very important and usually has little to no slack, so be careful. Otherwise you will tear it or destroy the connector.

After freeing the panel from the screws, carefully remove it. If necessary, use a thin knife. The panel should come out easily with little force, do not use force. If it cannot be removed, check again to see if there are still any screws that have not been disconnected, even under the device, and unscrew them.

After removing the panel, carefully set it aside. If it is connected by cable to the laptop, ensure its integrity. Then locate and remove the screws holding the keypad in place. Usually these are two to five screws located in the upper part of it.

Before removing the keyboard, again pay attention to its back, there it can be connected to a data cable that is connected to the computer itself. This cable also usually has no slack, so be careful when working. It is extremely important to avoid tearing it and destroying the connector.

Carefully remove the keypad and disconnect the data cable, mirroring the small tab on the connector. After disconnecting the cable, set it aside.

Take the new device, align it (without inserting it), and connect the data cable to the connector on the laptop. Usually by inserting a flat cable into the connector as far as it will go, and clicking the small latch that is mirrored in the connector onto it. With the cable connected, place the keyboard in place. Do not pull or damage the cable. Insert and tighten the screws holding the device. Reinstall top panel. Usually this does not require much effort. Tighten all previously removed screws securing the top panel.

After that, insert the battery and boot the laptop. If you did everything correctly, you now have a completely working keyboard.

Hi all. Today we will repair the laptop ASUS K52JR with a faulty keyboard.

Background.

According to the owner, coffee was poured onto the laptop, after which the keyboard stopped working. For repairs, the owner took the laptop to a service center, where it sat for several months. As a result, the laptop was returned to the client without repair. Workers service center They reported that some expensive part had burned out, and there was no point in buying a new keyboard, since it would not work. Sold to load regular usb a keyboard that the client had been happily using for several months.

A year after this story, they brought me this laptop for cleaning and asked me to restore the keyboard if possible.

Laptop diagnostics.

I will not describe the process of disassembling and cleaning the laptop, but will focus on diagnosing the functionality of the keyboard. Let's determine whether the motherboard is really faulty, or whether the problem is only in the keyboard.

During disassembly, I tore the keyboard away from the case, as it was simply stuck with old coffee.

Coffee residue on the laptop lid

same thing on the keyboard

The same story happened with the case cover itself. Dried sweet coffee, almost tightly stuck together DVD drive with lid.

Coffee on DVD drive

Here I began to assume that the laptop was not even disassembled, since during the repair these traces should have been removed. The motherboard itself was covered in dust, but fortunately it was not flooded. No traces of repairs were found on it either.

Since it was claimed that the new keyboard was tossed in and did not work, I decided to check the health of the laptop itself, namely, whether the motherboard responded to key presses. For these purposes, I needed to make a small sample.

Making a sample for laptop keyboards.

The sample will consist of the following parts:

Probe parts

The manufacturing process is clearly visible in the photographs. Wiring is soldered to the ears of the needles, and a resistor is soldered to the ends of the wires. You can solder a resistor to the needle and wires to it, this is at your discretion.

Probe making

This will not affect the operation of the device in any way. For aesthetics, I wrapped the whole thing in heat shrink.

Final version

Checking the functionality of the keyboard connector on the motherboard.

First of all, you need to download a program to test the keyboards on the laptop you are testing.

Program interface for testing keyboards

I attach the Exe file of the program at the end of the article. Also, you need to make sure that there is access to the connector contacts on the solder side. If there is no such access, then you need to disassemble the laptop and remove the top cover. In my case, there was access, but since the laptop needs to be washed, I completely disassembled the laptop.

Now let’s learn more about how to check functionality. Each pin on the connector is responsible for certain letters and numbers. If we connect several pins to each other using a probe, we will simulate keypresses on a laptop. Resistor, protects the motherboard from short circuit, but its nominal value is enough to detect a key press.

The program on the computer will show which keys were pressed and which were not.

Procedure for working with the probe.

We place one needle on the first pin of the connector, after which we touch the remaining pins (2,3,4, etc.) in turn with the second needle. Next, we transfer the first needle to the second pin, and with the other needle we go through all the others (3,4,5, etc.). We move the first needle to pin 3, with the other needle we touch 4, 5, 6, etc. Thus we reach the end of the connector.

Keyboard connector. The first arrow points to the first pin

Verification Process

This is how the program reacts to button presses. Pressed buttons are highlighted in blue, buttons that were not pressed are highlighted in black.

As a result, if the motherboard is in good condition, all keys will be pressed. I did not press the keys: Scroll Lock, Insert, the second Windows key. This is correct, since I do not have these keys on my native keyboard.

View of the program after closing the last pin

Conclusion

Thus, we checked the serviceability motherboard. I ordered a new keyboard, after installation everything worked great. In the previous service, the laptop was not even disassembled, as can be seen from the photo.

Be careful when choosing a service, and good luck with your repairs!!!
