Map

The map is the basis of the navigation program. The clock's hand dial shows both the current time and the remaining time until arrival: in the last hour of the journey, the orange bezel decreases as you approach the end of the route. Objects on the map

The map of the navigator displays various objects and places of interest. These are gas stations, restaurants with homemade food and coffee houses with excellent coffee, hotels and shops, car services and other facilities. Many of these points are already plotted on the map supplied with the navigator. Nevertheless, anyone will be able to independently replenish this list, marking interesting places on the map while driving or walking.

Having stumbled upon a new restaurant on Myasnitskaya or a traffic police officer with a radar on Bolshaya Nikitskaya, the navigator user will immediately fix their location and immediately share relevant information with friends.

Shturmann is not a new brand on the Russian market, M2M-Telematics started selling navigators under this brand about three years ago. And the Link 300 model is also not so hot, what a novelty, it has been on sale for several months already - with iGO 8, Autosputnik or Navitel navigation programs. But this spring, a remarkable event happened: Content-Master, which separated from M2M-Telematics, offered a completely new navigation software - Shturmann. And Link 300 became the first carrier of this program. Moreover, for this project, the operator mobile communications MTS has offered a special tariff for GPRS-connection, where one megabyte costs 2.98 rubles. Not so cheap in absolute terms, but the fact is that in this offer, billing occurs without rounding up to a whole megabyte. Packets of information with an update of the traffic situation usually “weigh” several tens of kilobytes, so that when the connection is broken after the next connection, we “give” the operator the cost of unused traffic. In the new MTS tariff "Team Navigator", the user pays per kilobyte, which allows him to save a lot. They say that the daily expenditure of funds is an average of 1 ruble, however, only the road to and from work is taken into account, that is, for a 2-2.5 hour trip.

Another distinctive feature of the Link 300 with Shturmann navigation is the use of maps from Navteq, until now not very popular in navigators (to put it mildly). Navteq relies on standard installed navigators and access to "retail" for the company - a new experience. Let's see how Navteq will be able to squeeze out its eternal competitor - TeleAtlas, as well as other suppliers of Russian maps in this segment.

The device comes in a large beautiful box, which contains quite a lot of all the necessary accessories. In addition to the navigator itself, the set includes: a SIM card from MTS, a USB cable and a wire for powering in a car, a mounting bracket, a pen, two instructions and a CD with PDF files of "Manuals" and additional software. And two covers are also given to the "Shturmann" - soft cloth and semi-hard leather, as for good PDAs. Alas, there is no memory card included. There is also no mains charger, but recently few people have invested in it at all, since the need for it is not obvious. There are no headphones either - good ones will not be put in, and bad ones are not really needed.

Shturmann Link 300 is not the cheapest navigator, Yandex Market gives a range of prices from 8,790 to 12,600 rubles. Solid packaging, color instructions with glossy covers, two covers - these are all attempts to emphasize the "top". But, as often happens, with external signs of glamor, the creators saved on more important things. For example, the power cord here is ordinary, not twisted, and this, by the way, is a danger factor! There was no place in the case for the pen, which almost automatically means its rapid loss. The gloss on the covers of the "Manuals" is, of course, important, but why are there no instructions for the software, while there are already two of them for the navigator, short and detailed? I note that there are no instructions for the software even on the disk! Apparently, they simply did not have time to write it - our test copy of the device was from the very first batch. So the instructions will have to be downloaded from the site. Another sign of savings is the painted plastic of the body of the navigator itself. The gloss of this paint will quickly fade, then it will begin to peel off, and in six months the navigator will move into the category of “heavily used” things, as they say in the ads.

But when new, the Link 300 gleams like a polished deck, beams of light reflected from the body of the device radiate throughout the cabin. Varnish was not spared, but this did not add solidity, on the contrary, it created a feeling of tackiness. It's a pity, because the overall design of the navigator is not bad, without this artificial sheen it would look strict and with dignity.

On the front panel of the device are only a power indicator and an almost imperceptible microphone hole. On the top side, as expected, is the power button. The right end contains two slots - for a SIM card and a micro-SD memory card. But the navigator can easily work without a map - all navigation is "wired" in internal memory. Rubber plugs for card slots are fraught with some "resource" danger. The fact is that they are equipped with tips that fit tightly into narrow grooves. If the plug is not fixed flush, so that the tip fits completely into the intended hole, the navigator simply will not “see” the cards. This, apparently, is such insurance against their falling out of the slots. The problem is that the tips on the rubber bands are also rubber, which means they will wear off sooner or later and stop pressing the internal microswitch. To tear off the gum itself is also as easy as shelling pears. So users do not need to open these slots often and for no good reason.

The left end "sheltered" a 3.5 mm audio output and a mini-USB connector, through which power is also supplied. On the rear panel there are only a speaker and a reset button, well protected from accidental clicks. Which, by the way, cannot be said about the power button - its resistance to pressing is minimal and provokes false inclusions.

The "insides" of the Link 300 are typical. It is built on the Centrality Atlas III chipset with a processor operating frequency of 372 MHz. The amount of built-in memory is 2 GB. The screen resolution is standard - 480x272 pixels, the matrix is ​​resistive. The GPS-receiver is the same Atlas, but at the presentation the specialists of the Content-Master unambiguously hinted that work is underway to equip Shturmann navigators with GLONASS receivers. Indeed, who, if not them, who are directly related to the federal operator NIS-GLONASS and M2M-Telematics, should not make the first domestic GLONASS navigator with a display diagonal of 4.3 inches? Now, with the advent of the chip from KB "Navis", it has become quite real.

The navigator is controlled by the Windows CE 5.0 operating system, as the most proven one. However, the "five", most likely, was also taken due to economy - it is much cheaper than the modern "six". For the same reason, they plan to switch to Android in the future. But for some reason, WinCE 5.0 was not completely localized - some built-in applications remained in English. An email client, for example.

Applications navigator is rich, do not take away. In fact, this is a full-fledged PDA, where network functions have been added to traditional multimedia functions. It is an internet browser, Pigeon ICQ manager, MSN messenger and built-in Windows CE mail browser. The last two are not Russified. In addition, Link 300 was equipped with very convenient phone applications - the actual “dialer” and an SMS client. How it all works, we will now check.

⇡ Installation and ergonomics

The Link 300 bracket is non-component, with only one adjustment - you can adjust the rotating hinge, on which the platform for the cradle is fixed. The range of movement of the hinge is significantly limited, and in both planes. And if horizontal movement will be enough for many, then the vertical movement is impermissibly small. The fact is that the bracket connecting the suction cup and the hinge has a fixed bend, and on windshields with a large inclination, the range of movement of the hinge may not be enough. Even here, on the Ford Focus, the navigator got to its highest position when the suction cup was installed almost to the salon mirror. The displacement of the mount on the glass down, at a greater angle of inclination, has already caused problems with the review of the navigator.

Both mounting elements (bracket and cradle) are made of the original transparent plastic and look cool. It is very convenient to fix the suction cup, no rotational movements are required. By the way, the proud inscription Made in Germany flaunts on the edge of the suction cup.

The power connector of the navigator, located on the end facing the driver, is convenient, you can insert the cord after installing the device in the cradle. But here is a non-twisted cord (sorry for the repetition) - this is completely inconvenient.

⇡ Hardware interface

Who doesn’t need instructions - this is the hardware menu, everything is clear and obvious here. Of course, there are classic sections on navigation, media and settings, but “applications”, “messages” and “phone” have been added.

The telephone menu is clear immediately and without explanation - once you touch the icons, you can easily master the simple operations of dialing a number or entering it into a notebook.

The built-in phone also works well, but, of course, only in speakerphone mode. Your interlocutor will begin to experience hearing problems only if the navigator is more than half a meter away from you - the sensitivity of the microphone is still underestimated. But this is correct, otherwise the interlocutor will not hear you over the abundance of noise.

There are no difficulties with the SMS menu either, except that you have to remember the purpose of one button. In search of a mechanism for minimizing the on-screen keyboard, we racked our brains - it turns out that it contains a drop-down menu under the bottom right click with an arrow. There, among the functions of changing the font (duplicated, however, on individual keys) there is a big/small button. So she makes the keyboard such that it does not block the text field. But alas, in the “small” keyboard mode, you can’t do without a pen. Note that the SMS client in the navigator with "traffic jams" is not pampering, but an absolute necessity. With it, you can quickly request a balance, receive a message about the receipt of money in the account. And just dialing an SMS from the screen is easier and faster than from a telephone keypad.

Internet surfing and instant messengers are, of course, a whim; sites are not fully displayed on a small screen. So the maximum is to look at the mail. This case, by the way, is not very fast and not cheap - the modem does not have a 3G channel and communication is carried out only via GPRS. Viewing mail on Yandex for half an hour “warmed up” our account by almost 40 rubles. But as a means of quickly accessing the Internet, the Link 300 will do just fine, especially since it has an amazingly modest power consumption - the navigator can work from the built-in battery for more than two hours!

There is only one problem - turning off the GSM module is hidden deep in the "settings" section and by default the navigator connects to the operator. If you leave something incomplete in messengers or browsers, then the traffic will gradually “drip”, emptying the account. It would be better to put it with a separate button on the main menu page.
