How to find out the amount of RAM in Windows 7. How to see how much RAM is on your computer. Checking RAM

If you need to know how much random access memory(RAM) installed on your computer or laptop, as well as get additional information about it: current frequency, number of occupied RAM slots, type, model or voltage - this can be done both with built-in system tools and with the help of third-party free programs(in the latter case you can get more detailed information).

This manual contains details about various methods determine how many GB of RAM are installed on a PC or laptop, as well as some additional information, which may be useful. If you are interested in how to find out how much memory your computer supports, I touched on this topic in a separate article: How to increase the RAM of a laptop (also relevant for desktop computers). Also useful: Is it possible to install RAM of different sizes, frequencies, voltages.

  • How to find out how many GB of RAM is on your computer using Windows
  • Determining the amount of RAM using third-party programs
  • View information about installed memory in BIOS/UEFI
  • Video instruction

Windows 10, 8.1, and Windows 7 provide simple utilities to view your computer's settings, including hardware specifications related to the amount of RAM. First about the method for everyone latest versions OS and then a separate method for Windows 10.

More detailed information regarding the hardware characteristics of the installed RAM is not available here. But often this information is enough for a novice user.

If you have Windows 10 installed, then you can use the following method and get more detailed information about the installed RAM memory:

Keep in mind that information about the number of used slots may be incorrect (especially for laptops): sometimes, if there are only 2 RAM slots, the system “sees” 4.

Third-party programs for determining the amount of memory and other characteristics of a computer are good because they allow you to obtain more detailed information about various RAM parameters. There are many different programs for viewing computer characteristics, but in the context of this article I would recommend using the free CPU-Z, which you can download as an installer or portable version in a ZIP archive from the official website https://www.cpuid.com/softwares /cpu-z.html

After starting the program, go to the “Memory” tab. Here in the “General” section you will see basic information about the installed memory (I specifically do not touch on some parameters, as they are unnecessary in the context of the article):

  • Type - memory type.
  • Size - the total size of the RAM.
  • Channel - in which mode the memory operates. Typically: Single (single-channel) or Dual (two-channel).
  • NB Frequency - the current frequency of the memory controller (not the same as the memory frequency and not really for beginners). Sometimes the item may not be active (on older systems) and may not display information.

You can see the current memory frequency in the Timings - DRAM Frequency section. It may “jump” and be half the stated frequency in the specifications of your RAM module - this is normal (we get the frequency twice as high due to the dual-channel mode, but this field will still display the actual frequency), a small a smaller difference from “round” numbers is also normal and depends mostly on the processor of the computer or laptop.

Separately, on the SPD tab in CPU-Z, by selecting a specific slot at the top left, you can get information about the characteristics of each installed memory module: from the main one (for beginners) - type, maximum frequency, manufacturer, model of the memory module (in the Part Number section) , memory module size, voltage (below, in the table under Voltage).

There are other programs that provide equally detailed information. One of the popular, but not completely free, is AIDA64.

Information about the installed RAM can also be found in the BIOS (UEFI) of your PC or laptop (see How to enter BIOS/UEFI in Windows 10).

In BIOS of different manufacturers and different versions, this information is located in different locations: sometimes on home page(Main), sometimes in separate sections like System Information or RAM (DRAM) Configuration. On a PC, these sections usually contain information about the amount of installed memory, frequency and voltage (as well as additional information and settings).

And a simple video that clearly shows the first two ways to find out how much RAM is installed on your system.

I hope the instructions were helpful. If anything is not completely clear, I look forward to your comments.

A computer's RAM is an extremely important component of its system. Its volume may vary, it all depends on what tasks your PC is oriented towards. So, for example, weak laptops designed for everyday tasks have a small amount of RAM, while the same gaming “machines” have the maximum.

Often a user needs to find out the computer's RAM if, say, he has forgotten some data. This is very simple to do, so much so that even an inexperienced user can easily cope with the task. So, let's find out together how to find out RAM windows computer 7. Earlier I already talked about and.

How to find out the amount of RAM

To find out the amount of RAM on your computer, do the following:

  1. Go to “My Computer” by clicking on the corresponding shortcut on the desktop or using the Win+E key combination.
  2. In the header of the window that opens you will see the active line “System Properties”, click on it.
  3. Next, another window will open, find the “System” section in it;
  4. Now carefully study the contents of the window that opens, because it contains a grouped description of the system data of your device, as well as some others, including RAM. Find the line " Installed memory“- it will mean the amount of your RAM.

Checking RAM

It often happens that some glitches, malfunctions, or errors occur in the system, and from knowledgeable users you can hear the phrase “check your RAM.” But how is this done? It’s very simple, and you don’t need to download anything additional; you can use the built-in special application.

So, open the start menu, now in the “Search” line enter “Windows Memory Checker” without quotes, of course. You will see the result found by the system, click on it. Next, a window will open in which you need to choose one of two options: either run the scan now, or the next time you turn on the computer. If you select the first option, the PC will immediately reboot, after which the scan will start. The result will be available the next time you log in. By the way, after the check is completed, the computer will reboot again, and you will be able to continue working on it.

To summarize, I note that RAM is the most important component of any computer, which affects its performance. Of course, the more RAM a device has, the faster and more productive it will work.

  1. Open context menu“My Computer” shortcut (right-click on it once). Next, select "Properties".

As a result, a window will appear indicating the size of available RAM, the type of operating system (for example, 32-bit), etc.

  1. An alternative method is to go through Start.

Start – Run.

In the window that appears, manually enter msinfo32 and press Enter.

  1. Another method that is based on a combination of function keys.
  • Press “Win + R” and enter dxdiag in the window that opens.
  • A new window will appear. Pay attention to the “Memory” line. The physical amount of computer memory will be indicated there.
  • All methods describe the free number of Gigabits on your PC.

But how can you find out exactly the RAM of your laptop or computer and analyze it additional characteristics read below.

I want to immediately warn you that here you cannot do without using third party applications and utilities. One such program is Speccy. It allows you to access all the characteristics of the modules and boards that are currently connected to your PC.

The utility is free and readily available for downloading from the Internet.

After downloading the program, proceed with installation. The utility is installed using standard methods, without any particular difficulties.

To check what RAM is installed on your PC, do the following:

  1. Launch the program.
  2. Open the "RAM" section.

And then just read the information that interests you. Everything is described there in an accessible and understandable way. There are characteristics about DDR type, number of channels, volume and frequency. You can also see what percentage of RAM is being used at a given minute and many other useful characteristics. Based on these characteristics, you can decide whether you should

But here is the most direct way to find out the RAM of your computer. If you understand all the system hardware, then:

  • turn off the power to the system unit;
  • remove the cover;
  • take out the memory modules and read the characteristics you are interested in directly on them.

However, this method is only for experienced craftsmen, and not for beginners.

On a note! Recently, if you missed it, I told or. And I also spoke. Be sure to read and do not forget to leave comments on the articles.

That's all for me! Now you know for sure how to find out your computer's RAM. Please write your wishes and comments under the article. I also advise you to subscribe to new blog articles and receive something new directly to your email. I wish all my readers great health and peace!

From time to time, many users want to perform such an interesting operation as checking RAM.

The fact is that very often operating system Windows operational The memory cannot cope with the load placed on it, although, judging by its volume, it should.

In other words, the computer does not produce the speed that it should, based on the amount of RAM.

In general, this is far from the only problem that arises with memory in operating rooms. Windows systems.

Additional utility memtest86+

In addition to the standard tool described above, there is more than one special utility for checking RAM.

All of them can be easily downloaded and some of them are even in Russian. This option is just right for Windows 10 and Windows XP.

Such programs also do an excellent job of their main task, that is, checking for errors. But according to many users, the best of them is memtest86+.

This program provides the most accurate data and can work in the most different versions operating systems, including including Windows 7, 10, Vista and so on.

You can download memtest86+ very quickly online. The entire process of using this program from start to finish is as follows:

  • Download memtest86+ from the official website. The link is as follows: www.memtest.org/#downiso. There we will have several download options available:
    • in .gz format for the Linux operating system and similar ones (in Figure No. 5 it is underlined with a red line);
    • in .zip format in order to then burn the image to a regular CD or DVD disc(underlined with a green line);
    • in .exe format for writing to a flash drive (blue line).

  • After this, you will need to write the downloaded image to a flash drive or to a regular disk so that later, when the system starts, these files can run.
Everything is very simple here - if you downloaded the .zip, then standard means write the file to disk, if .exe, then dump it onto a flash drive, deleting everything else from it. And if you downloaded .gz, then we just launch it.
  • After recording, you need to set the BIOS to boot from the recording media. To do this, you need to make sure that the system checks when starting up to see if there is anything in the drives and connectors.
For this to happen, we restart the computer and when it starts, press the Delete button (on some computers F2). This will take us to the BIOS.
There we look for an item whose name includes the word “Boot” (for example, in Award BIOS it is called “Advanced BIOS Features” - shown in Figure No. 6).

There we look for the “Boot Sequence” item (again, the name may change depending on the version).

In the window that appears, we see a list of all available media from which downloading can occur. The name of the flash drive will include “USB”, and the name of the disk will appear “CD/DVD”.

We need to click on the first item, that is, “1st Boot Device” and select the desired drive in the window that appears. In the example given, this is a flash drive, that is, a USB drive.

  • Insert the media with the program. It will start automatically. The program window looks as shown in Figure 10.

Advice: It is better to check each RAM module separately. This means that you need to physically (by hand) remove each memory module in turn and run the test. In this case, the utilitymemtest86+will find the module that is damaged. It's better to just throw away the problematic memory module and replace it with a new one.

If problems are detected, the memtest86+ window will look like shown in Figure 11.

Unfortunately, memtest86+ does not work in Russian. But it can be easily and quickly downloaded online.

And here the main thing is to find problems, and if there are any, we will see red, as shown in Figure No. 11.

More details about how memtest86+ works can be found in the video below.

Our article today will tell you how to find out the RAM of a computer running Windows 7. We will show you how to determine the amount of RAM, find out its type and a number of other equally important parameters. So, without delay, let's get started.

Random access memory (RAM or random access memory) is a volatile memory module that is used for temporary storage of data different types. For example, the contents of the Windows clipboard or auxiliary information that is addressed from the CPU to the disk or vice versa.

Such memory can have a variety of parameters, which are not limited to the same size. There is also the type of RAM, timing, cache size, etc. A little lower we will give both a simple method that shows only the number of gigabytes, and a more advanced option that provides Full description our RAM.

The options described below work great for both 32-bit Windows versions 7 and for 64 Bit editions.

How to find out the amount of RAM on Windows 7

So, let's consider both options that allow you to find out the amount of RAM in the operating system from Microsoft Windows 7. First, let's look at a simple option, and then move on to a more complex, but also functional method.

Using a combination of buttons

This is the easiest way to find out the amount of RAM in a given OS. In order to do this, you just need to simultaneously hold down the Win + PauseBreak buttons. The first is in the bottom row of your keyboard, and the second is in the upper left part of it. As a result, a new window will open, in which basic data about our operating system will be written, including the amount of RAM.

In some cases, there is simply no second button on the keyboard. If you have the same situation, do the following:

  1. Go to the Start menu and launch Control Panel.
  2. Go to the “System and Security” section, and then click on the “System” link.

We are moving on to a more advanced option.

Third party software

So let's see all the data about our RAM using special utility. You can download it from the official website, and it’s completely free. Then we do the following:

  1. Run the resulting file and begin the installation. Follow the prompts step-by-step wizard. When the installation is complete, close the installer window.
  2. Launch the application and go to the motherboard section on the left side of the window. Expand it and select “SPD”.
  3. As a result, detailed data about our memory will be displayed on the right side of the program.

These include:

  • Properties of the memory module. Namely, the manufacturer serial number, release date, RAM size, width, operating frequency and operating voltage.
  • Memory timings. Measurement at different frequencies.
  • Module functions. Monolithic DRAM Device and Thermal Sensor support.
  • Information about the manufacturer and a link to its official website.

But that's not all, this application allows you to test your RAM, get its score in points and compare it with other computers that have previously been tested. This is done as follows:

  1. Go to the “Test” tab and select its type. In this case it will be “Memory Copy”.
  2. We run the test and do not touch the PC until it is completed.
  3. Let's look at the results in comparison with other machines.

The comparison data was specially added by the AIDA64 developers after practice in their test laboratory.
