What is Reaper of Souls?

Reaper of Souls™ is the expansion to Blizzard Entertainment’s epic action RPG Diablo® III-a dark and terrifying new chapter in the ongoing conflict over the mortal realm of Sanctuary.

What is the story of Reaper of Souls?

Following the defeat of the Prime Evil by the Nephalem in Diablo III, the mortal realm of Sanctuary should have entered an age of hope and prosperity. Instead, this event has drawn out a shadowy being of immense power, one more sinister than any demon.

Malthael, the fallen Archangel of Wisdom, vanished long ago. In Reaper of Souls, he returns as the Angel of Death and seizes the Black Soulstone, the ancient artifact containing the essence of the Prime Evil. It is now up to the Nephalem to track down Malthael and thwart his plans, a journey that will take them through the legendary city of Westmarch, across the fetid swamps of the Blood March, and into the ancient halls of the Pandemonium Fortress.

What new features can we see in Reaper of Souls?

In addition to expanding the story of Diablo III with an all-new, action-packed Act V and introducing the incorruptible Crusader class, Reaper of Souls increases the game's level cap to 70. Players forging ahead with their existing Barbarian, Demon Hunter, Monk , Witch Doctor, and Wizard characters will benefit from an array of fearsome new spells and abilities as they advance in level.

The expansion also builds upon several key features of the Diablo franchise, with a greater emphasis on randomized environments, horrific new monsters, epic new quests, and substantial updates to the loot experience. The redesigned loot system in Reaper of Souls focuses on rewarding players with even better treasure through targeted “smart drops,” new and improved multi-level Legendary items, and a third artisan, the Mystic, who can augment an item’s power and appearance.

A new Adventure Mode has been added as well; with all Waypoints unlocked in this mode, the entire world becomes the player’s battlefield! Included in Adventure Mode are two new game features, Bounties, a randomized objective system, and Nephalem Rifts aka Loot Runs, a randomized dungeon system, provide fun and rewarding challenges for players to tackle when they're looking for new ways to test their might . Diablo III's Paragon progression system has also received several updates for the expansion, adding even more endgame character advancement and replayability.

What is Adventure Mode?

In Reaper of Souls, players are able to experience the world of Sanctuary through two different game modes: Campaign Mode and Adventure Mode.

In Campaign Mode, players reprise their pivotal roles as the heroes of Sanctuary in this latest chapter of the continuing Diablo saga. All quests, cut-scenes, in-game movies, and NPC dialogue are available and progression is intentionally linear.

Adventure Mode is Diablo III’s new sandbox mode, where players have the freedom to explore and play the game however they like. All waypoints are now unlocked, so players can go where they want, when they want. The waypoint list has been replaced with a waypoint map, a metaphor for the world that serves as a guide for Bounties and a checklist of completed gameplay options. The world is literally your battlefield! Adventure Mode also includes the aforementioned Bounties and Nephalem Rifts.

Can you give us more background on Malthael?

Quiet and elusive, Malthael was an enigma even to his own kind. In the years following the destruction of the Worldstone, this revered member of the Angiris Council grew increasingly distant and withdrawn, prone to long periods of isolation. Malthael’s eventual disappearance led to his transformation into the Angel of Death-a cataclysmic threat to the people of Sanctuary.

What can you tell us about the new class: the Crusader? Will the Crusader be available to all players?

Crusaders are righteous warriors who have been hardened through relentless, brutal combat with the foul evils plaguing eastern Sanctuary. In addition to wearing immensely heavy armor and wielding a wide range of cruel and punishing weapons, this new playable class uses battle magic to strengthen allies and weaken foes. A natural walking tank with a plethora of mid-range melee abilities, the Crusader adds power and versatility to any party of adventurers.

The Crusader class will only be available to players who purchase the expansion.

Have any changes been made to the difficulty scaling or settings in Reaper of Souls?

In Reaper of Souls, the game difficulty settings have been updated to Easy, Normal, Hard, Expert, Master, and Torment. Similar to the way the tiered settings and Monster Power work in Diablo III, higher difficulty levels present more powerful enemies who will potentially reward players with more powerful loot! Players are not required to defeat the game on a lower setting in order to unlock a higher difficulty setting (though some difficulties require higher-level characters). These settings can be selected at any time, for both Campaign Mode and Adventure Mode, making it more convenient than ever to find the level of challenge that’s right for you!

How does the new Paragon system work? Will the new Paragon system be available to all players?

We’ve made three significant changes to the Paragon system:

  • There is no cap on Paragon levels. Players can now earn as many Paragon levels as they please.
  • Paragon levels are now account-wide per game type. Normal characters on an account will share a Paragon level. Similarly, all Hardcore characters on an account will share a Paragon level. Any Paragon experience you gain on your Normal or Hardcore characters will contribute to your account’s “Normal Paragon level” or “Hardcore Paragon level.”
  • Players now earn Paragon Points each time they level up. These points can then be spent to boost up various stats in four different categories: Core Stats, Offensive, Defensive, and Adventure. All characters on your account have their own version of the allocated points, which can be reallocated at any time.

These changes were released as part of a pre-expansion patch and are available to all players.

Just recently, a new Diablo 3 expansion called “Reaper of Souls” was announced:

Reaper of Souls introductory video

No one can stop Death

“In the black soul stone, the lords of the Underworld are raging, they thirst for freedom and revenge. The ominous artifact was supposed to be hidden forever, but the angel of death Malthael appears in the mortal world, pursuing a terrible goal - to steal the black soul stone and subjugate its devilish power to his will. This is the beginning of the end of all things..."

Read the text of the original presentation of the supplement.

Well, for those for whom the video is enough, here’s what awaits us in the supplement

Loot 2.0, legendaries, fortune teller, loot wounds, paragon 2.0

In addition to what was said in the video translated into Russian, which was filmed at gemascom 2013, we also know the following:

  • Main boss of the expansion: Malthael
  • Act V Location: Westmarch
  • New cap: level 70
  • New Class: Crusader

I think everyone understands that new monsters have been created for the new addition, but if anyone doesn’t understand: there will be new monsters in the new addition!

That's all, you can get acquainted with the crusader in the new section dedicated to him:.

  • The developers took many innovations from an article by an advanced fan, which was called;
  • You can already partially try out the new loot system in the console version of the game;
  • The main boss is the angel of death Malthael, the other bosses of the expansion are The Seraph, Summoner of the Dead, Executioner and Death Maiden;
  • The new Diablo 3 expansion is darker and more gothic;
  • Blizzard created the crusader from pieces of the paladin from part 2, the rest came from the legends of the Spartans;
  • Smart loot is only part of the total loot and you don’t always get it.

2013-11-08: At BlizzCON, developments were presented: quests and nephalem portals (you can learn more about them from the article available at the link), as well as a new video dedicated to the new Reaper of Souls, which is below.

So we know that the Legion expansion will be released for World of Warcraft. What about Diablo 3? We've seen a lot of information about Patch 2.3.0 and the Ruins of Secheron, but what else can we expect? Where else can we go in the world of Sanctuary, or will we leave it altogether? Matthew Rossi tried to answer these questions in his new article.

One of the differences between Diablo 3 and World of Warcraft was that its first expansion, Reaper of Souls, was less about going somewhere new and more about who we were fighting. From the very beginning, we were opposed by the angel of death Malthael and the angelic forces who swore allegiance to him.

Yes, we walked through Westmarch through the Bloody Swamps and finally got to Pandemonium itself. But it was the upcoming battle that mattered, not the location. Although we will talk about locations, they will be less important than potential opponents. What other devilry can attack a nephalem?

Great and Lesser Creatures of Evil

Let's remember how Reaper of Souls ended - Malthael finally realized that he was unable to defeat the nephalem, and did the unthinkable for some. He shattered the Black Soul Stone, thus releasing the Great and Lesser Evils, which were imprisoned in the stone towards the end of the main story of Diablo 3.

What does this mean? Well, at best, as a result of this Diablo, whom we fought in Diablo 3, the entity that had the power of all seven combined evils will be able to torture us again.

Why is this the best case scenario? In the end, this entity was so powerful that it was able to take Heaven by storm and almost destroy the Crystal Arch, the fall of which would mark the victory of the forces of evil in the Eternal Conflict. Well, all because we know that the nephalem is capable of defeating this entity. He has successfully fought her head-to-head in the past and defeated the Prime Evil.

The second situation is much worse in terms of the chaos it potentially creates. We are talking about the release of all seven Great Evils separately, throughout Sanctuary. The Black Soul Stone was associated with Sanctuary when it was destroyed during a ritual to absorb all human souls, killing their hosts in the process. When Malthael broke the stone, many Great and Lesser creatures of evil could be released and fall not back to the Underworld, but directly to Sanctuary.

They can slaughter, corrupt and enslave people all over the world at the same time, preparing to start a war against each other in order to find out which of the Great Generations will rule the already battered world, which not so long ago felt the betrayal of an angel.

Malthael nearly destroyed all of humanity - it is possible that a skilled liar such as Belial could even convince part or even all of humanity to rebel against the angels and the Angirian Council.

The creatures of evil might not even have to fight - instead, they could create a stronghold on Sanctuary, and send hundreds of potential nephalem from it to war in order to destroy the angels once and for all. Can even a nephalem do something like this?

But things could be even worse. Diablo was able to return as the Prime Evil because he supervised the creation of the body of the ideal host - Leah, the daughter of Adria and Aidan, conceived while the warrior was possessed by the essence of Diablo himself. Without such a carrier, the essences of each of the Great and Lesser creatures of evil can return back to the Underworld for rebirth. And they will not necessarily be reborn separately.

Tafamet

At the dawn of the universe, before the advent of Sanctuary, Pandemonium or the Underworld, Taphamet and Anu fought in eternal confrontation. They were two separated parts of the ancient creator of all things - Anu was a diamond warrior, perfect and amazing. Well, everything that was not inherent in Anu was part of Tafamet. A seven-headed dragon demon, she personified all evil, depravity and destruction. Her destruction gave birth to the Underworld itself, taking the form of her colossal corpse.

Now imagine if she came back. This is the original evil: an entity for which the concept of “evil deed” does not exist; a monster that does not have any profile. Horror, Hatred, Destruction, Torment, Lies, Sin and Pain are not individual traits of Tafamet. This creature literally personified the entire Underworld, and when Diablo reassembled the Great Evils into one entity, he could unwittingly open the door for the return of his ancestor.

And if Taphamet were to return, defeating her would require the power of a being with even greater potential than Anu; a being who embodies both good and evil.

No matter how gloomy the prospects described above may seem, they are not the only potential threats, and certainly not the only components of the nephalem’s interests.

Evil

We know very little about the Evil. Was he a demon? Shen the Miser claimed that the Evil One achieved the love of the Xiansai goddess Lyria, while in the guise of the Xiansai god of passion. But he could not maintain the said love, because by nature his feelings were envy, and he only wanted to become the second moon in order to follow Lyria across the night sky, where he could not otherwise go.

When Lyria began to be courted by the trickster god Zey, Evil responded by killing everything that was dear to him, even Lyria, and Zey managed to imprison Evil in the very stone that he gave to Lyria as a reminder of the time they spent together.

We've seen that there is at least some truth to this, according to Shen the Miser's story in Reaper of Souls after we found the broken gem and Lyria's ghost. Therefore, the task of tracking down and eliminating Evil may well be a suitable task for us.

Shen mentioned that in pursuit of this precious stone, he visited the Skovos Islands (the homeland of the Amazons and the Oracles; the place where the Horadrims visited, according to mentions in Reaper of Souls - and from where they did not return), and the stone was created in Xiansai, from where also originates from one of the game classes - the wizard. Chasing the Evil around the world could well be the theme of the next addition.

Leah's fate

Finally, we have an unfinished storyline from the original Diablo 3 - when Diablo took over Leah's body, what happened to her soul? It would be somehow wrong if at least one Great Creation of Evil could destroy the soul of a mortal in this way, especially when people, by nature, are able to choose between good and evil, and Leah was not given such a choice.

Didn’t Leah’s soul end up in the Black Stone of Souls when Diablo and the essences of the Great Creatures of Evil left it? Where is she now? Has she really suffered a completely unfair fate for a girl who spent most of the game trying to stop the Great Evils and avenge her uncle Deckard, and now she’s wasting away in the Underworld?

With the destruction of the Black Soul Stone, Diablo, as we know it, has most likely broken free.

The hunt for Leah's soul could turn into an epic confrontation with the will of the Lord of Terror, who wants to use the soul for some nefarious deed (or perhaps to mock us). Giving Leah the opportunity to return to life, or at least free herself from the Underworld, is, in my opinion, a worthy goal for an addition. And given that we have absolutely no idea what fate ultimately befell her, our search could take us anywhere in the world of Sanctuary, or even beyond.

There are also several other options. We could simply head to Skovos in search of the missing Horadrim, or to recruit one of the legendary Oracles, especially if the new expansion introduces a new class.

Amazons have already appeared as playable characters in Diablo 2, and it's been said that we won't see updated classes from Diablo 1 and 2, so the Oracle seems like a likely candidate to be a new class in the next expansion.

Either we will find ourselves in Xiansai, or we will go to the lost Kurast and further, to the Arid Steppes. After all, wherever we go, we know that the world of Sanctuary holds unimaginable wonders. How about, say, the lost city of the nephalem?

Josh Mosqueira and the beginning of the search for a new head of the project. Many fans took this news as a hint of preparations for the creation of Diablo IV and a refusal to further support the third part, including plans for a second story addition. Everything, however, may be completely different: from their own sources, journalists learned that the game did receive a second major DLC - in the form of a series of free updates.

According to the informant, the second addition was called The King of the North. Its announcement was supposed to be made during the BlizzCon 2015 event in November, but for a number of reasons the company decided to break it into parts and release it in the form of regular patches. New maps and story content released as part of updates « Ruins of Secheron » (The Ruins of Sescheron) in August 2015 and « Gray Island » (Greyhollow Island) in January 2016.

One of the reasons for the refusal to release the add-on was allegedly doubts among Blizzard executives about the advisability of allocating resources for its creation. Mosquera, who replaced Jay Wilson, decided to close the auction house with micropayments for real money (which pleased many players), after which revenue from the game in the West decreased. The company considered that it was unprofitable to release another major DLC in countries where gamers only pay for the game itself and add-ons. Blizzard's other current games - World of Warcraft, Heroes of the Storm and Overwatch - have been consistently profitable over time. In Asia, Diablo III also provides a good flow of revenue through Internet cafes and the sale of cosmetics and other items, but Americans and Europeans, the company is confident, will not accept such a business model.

Forbes contributor Paul Tassi asked Blizzard for comment and received the expected response: the developers refused to confirm or deny the information. A company representative only said that Diablo III will continue to be supported.

"Diablo remains in good hands with the people who created it and senior management still working on the game, including some of the staff who have been working on the series since Blizzard North's founding.", reads the answer. — In terms of our content release schedule, we have always supported our games. You can see this from the example of Diablo III, which has expansion Reaper of Souls and received [and continues to receive] updates not only with technical and gameplay fixes, but also with new locations. We are extremely pleased that the game remains popular: it attracts hundreds of thousands of new players every month, and seasonal updates receive positive feedback from gamers.".

Tassi has some doubts about the reliability of the source's information. Producing free content that can be sold is "a little strange", he writes. It’s no less strange to refuse to release an add-on in the West just because of the lack of microtransactions (where large DLCs are already sold for $20-40) or only in Asia. At the same time, considering that The King of North was not ready for release, he argues, such a decision seems quite reasonable. The informant claimed that Blizzard is not currently working on a new addition, but this information may have become outdated.
