Smart watch gear s3 frontier. Comparison of smart watches Samsung Galaxy Watch and Samsung Gear S3. Samsung Gear S3 display specifications

There is a lull in the Android Wear device camp, which Samsung has not failed to take advantage of. Back at IFA 2016, the Korean manufacturer presented the Gear S3 smartwatch, which continues the glorious traditions of the first generations. At the same time, some weaknesses were eliminated, and the advantages, on the contrary, were strengthened. The result is a larger and heavier Smartwatch, available in two versions. Moreover, even iPhone owners may like the Gear S3.

We didn't seal it. Samsung continues to work on making the company's wearable gadgets. Samsung prepared the corresponding companion application almost a year ago, but for some reason it is delayed. Now the first quarter of 2017 has been named as a possible release date. On the other hand, Android support has not changed. Gear S3 can work with a smartphone equipped with Android 4.4 or later, as well as 1.5 GB random access memory.

But joining the world of Gear S3 costs more than . Samsung asked for its predecessor 349 and 379 euros (Standard/Classic), in Russia prices range from 14.2 thousand rubles and from 18.0 thousand rubles. For a new watch, regardless of the version, you will have to pay 399 euros or from 22.7 thousand rubles.

Almost classic wristwatch

The price alone of the two versions of the Gear S3 is somewhat confusing. But, as with the Gear S2, the difference is limited to the appearance and material of the bracelet. The Gear S2 is being replaced by the Gear S3 frontier, and the Gear S2 classic is giving way to the Gear S3. The frontier version is a little more elegant than its predecessor; compared to the classic version, the watch looks more sporty.

With dimensions of 46.0 x 49.0 x 12.9 mm, both versions of the Gear S3 are larger than the Gear S2 models, weighing 59 and 63 g too. The case in both cases is made of stainless steel; in the frontier it is black. In addition to the color of the case, three more external differences can be counted: the bezel has more noticeable marks, the frontier buttons are not round, but oblong, Samsung used different materials strap - leather (classic) or elastomer (frontier). Both cases are protected from dust and moisture and are IP68 certified. So the Gear S3 can withstand a drop in a sink full of water, rain, or a short session in the pool. Nose Apple Watch 2 they still cannot compete.

Externally, the watch looks high-quality and expensive, which was quite logical to expect, since Samsung attracted famous designers. The Gear S3 classic will look good with a suit, while the frontier version is better suited to sporty users. The bracelet of both models can be easily replaced, all 22 mm straps fit. Samsung itself offers a large number of bracelets in two lengths 110 and 130 mm. This is good, but some women or men with thin wrists will not be as comfortable. It's all about the large case; it would not hurt the manufacturer to release a Smartwatch version with a smaller case.

Otherwise, the watch is quite comfortable to wear, comparable to classic watches of a similar size. We had no complaints about the quality of production. The bezel and buttons are quite comfortable, the resistance when turning and pressing is well chosen.

Overall, the Gear S3 feels even more like an expensive watch than the previous generation. Except that some users may find them too big.

With GPS support and new SoC

The enlargement of the corps was accompanied by some changes in hardware. The display has increased from 1.2 to 1.3", it is still round and has a resolution of 360 x 360 pixels. Thus, the pixel density has even decreased, but readability is still good, despite the Pentile matrix. The display brightness is quite sufficient, it can be adjusted in ten steps, with maximum brightness the dial is readable even outdoors on a sunny day. There is also an always-on display function, where information is displayed even during inactivity.

The battery received an increase of 52%. The Gear S3 has a capacity of 380 mAh, an increase that could not have come at a better time given the new sensors. In addition to the accelerometer, heart rate sensor and gyroscope, there is a barometer and a GPS receiver. As you know, determining coordinates from a satellite requires a lot of energy.

The installed SoC was a serious step forward. The Exynos 3250, which was used in the Gear S2, has given way to one specifically designed for wearable devices. The "system on a chip" is equipped with two Cortex A53 cores instead of A7, the process technology is now 14 nm instead of 28 nm, but the maximum frequency is still 1 GHz. The SoC contains a WLAN 802.11n module, Bluetooth 4.2, NFC and . The memory capacity has increased from 512 to 768 MB, the built-in flash memory still has a capacity of 4 GB.

The watch case contains a speaker and microphone, as well as a vibration motor. The battery is charged by induction, that is, there are no usual contacts.

There are still not enough applications for Tizen

Tizen's biggest drawback continues to be its sparse selection of apps. Samsung chose this operating system for its wearable devices, but support third party developers Compared to Android Wear and watchOS it leaves much to be desired. Of course, the range of applications is gradually increasing, but many popular programs are not available for Tizen. All this is somewhat annoying, especially considering the promises of the South Korean giant. The Spotify app was released a few days ago, but many other programs are still missing.

But even if apps appear in a timely manner, Apple's versatility Watch smart The Gear S3 watch will still not be able to achieve this - at least in the medium term. Even taking into account the number initially available applications at 11.000.

Samsung itself is in no hurry to expand functionality through its own applications. Even such fundamental functions as a timer are not standard - you need to install a third-party application. There are such applications, but we come to the conclusion that even basic applications have heterogeneous design and different management concepts.

Surprise someone today smart watch almost impossible. Many manufacturers produce them, but only a few achieve truly noteworthy results. The Samsung company stands out against this background, offering users high-quality products with excellent functionality and stunning design.

Its latest developments are no exception. We are talking about the Samsung Gear S3 collection, which includes two variations of watches. These are the Frontier and Classic models. Each of them deserves attention and it’s time to get to know them in more detail.

Specifications

Appearance and features

The design of the devices is in many ways similar to the previous model. The rounded shape of the case harmoniously combines with the edging made of high-quality steel. The picture is complemented by a bezel that can be rotated to control the watch. The Classic is characterized by a slightly more graceful design, while the Frontier has a somewhat rough and masculine shape.

The control components are standard and located in familiar places. In this aspect, the manufacturer remained true to himself and did not come up with anything new. The strap has a standard 22 mm fastening format, which can be replaced with any other product if necessary. The housings have IP68 protection. It provides good protection from moisture and dust

The dimensions of the Samsung Gear S3 watch are completely identical. Width – 46 mm, height – 49 mm, thickness – 12.9 mm.

Frontier or Classic

Classic offers a design that is as close as possible to the appearance of conventional watch models. The vintage feel is perfectly complemented by a leather strap. This combination makes the accessory almost indistinguishable from the classics beloved by many.

Frontier looks downright impressive. The contoured bezel is supplemented with special marks. This makes the device even more attractive. A stylish and modern silicone-based strap completes the picture.

The difference between the models is insignificant. Frontier offers greater ergonomic shape and improved button comfort. And the bezel looks more attractive. Classic has a more strict form factor, which practically cannot leave anyone indifferent. He is able to optimally complement the image of a business person and harmoniously fit into the style he professes.

Frontier copes well with sudden temperature changes and fluctuations. Such smartwatches weigh only a few grams more than their counterparts. The main difference lies in the hardware. Frontier has an integrated LTE module, and

Classic can only boast of Bluetooth and Wi-Fi. Compliance with MIL-STD 810G ensures Frontier performs productively and trouble-free even under the most extreme conditions.

Display

A high-quality 1.3-inch display is responsible for displaying data and contacting the user. It has a touch format and a round shape. SuperAMOLED allows you to get an output picture with excellent brightness, color rendition and saturation. There are no distortions, data can be read without problems even in excessive ambient light. The resolution is small and is only 360x360. But this does not affect the comfort of use at all.

Due to the easy immersion inside the case, it is possible to protect the glass from scratches and other defects. Additional protection is provided by Gorilla Glass SR+. The Always On Display option keeps the screen always on. But the brightness is minimal and energy consumption is quite insignificant.

Management and OS

In the context of management Special attention The bezel deserves it. Due to special engraving, it does not slip in your hands and eliminates the slightest possibility of incorrectly responding to user commands. Rotating the rim in different directions allows you to as soon as possible get to the desired menu item and execute the required command.

There are a couple of mechanical buttons. They found a place on the right side of the gadget. The touch screen simplifies the control process even more. Just a couple of swipes are enough and necessary information already before the user's eyes.

The system operates via Tizen OS. The performance is in perfect order, no errors were found in the operation. Everything is very simple, fast and with maximum level comfort. Seamless integration of watches with mobile devices has been implemented. This requires iOS 9 or higher and Android 4.4 or higher.

Hardware platform

The smartwatch operates on the basis of a dual-core Exynos 7270 chipset. Its frequency is 1 GHz, it supports 14 nm technology and is characterized by maximum low power consumption during operation.

768 MB of RAM is enough for trouble-free interaction with various applications. The internal memory has a capacity of 4 GB, but about 1.5 GB is available to the user. For personal data and musical compositions this is quite enough.

Use Samsung watch Gear S3 is possible not only in conjunction with mobile devices, but also in a completely independent format. This requires activation offline mode, which completely closes the gadget from third-party contacts. The Wi-Fi module is used to work with applications, and via Bluetooth it is possible to connect headphones or external speakers. This option will be appreciated by all lovers of training in peace and without an annoying smartphone nearby.

Sports opportunities

Each of the models has a pre-installed speedometer, GPS, altimeter, heart rate monitor and even a barometer. Such equipment provides comprehensive monitoring not only of the active phase of life. It is also very useful during sleep.

A GPS receiver and baro-altimeter make it possible to measure with maximum accuracy the number of steps taken, altitude relative to sea level, and changes in pressure that have occurred over the past 6 hours.

Viewing all received information is available in the relevant sections of the S Health application. There you can also activate different operating modes depending on the exercises performed and the load experienced.

Music and local applications

The Samsung Gear S3 smartwatch allows you to fully manage your music collection. Everything necessary is provided for this. Moreover, control is possible not only with those compositions that are on the smartphone, but also with stand-alone ones. You can store them on the built-in storage device, and switching tracks is done directly on the gadget screen.

I am pleased with the large number of applications that are available for integration into this device. Some of them are preinstalled before the user purchases the watch; most can be downloaded from cloud storage or specialized resources.

There are also many games that are designed specifically for these devices. They are controlled via the bezel. An interesting and rather original solution that will surely appeal to many.

Autonomy

The capacity of the built-in battery pack is 380 mAh. The indicator may not be the highest, but it is enough for the gadget to fully function for several days. With active system loading, the period may decrease to approximately 1.5-2 days. In standby mode, this period can last for days and weeks. The manufacturer has done an excellent job in this direction and undoubtedly deserves sincere praise and gratitude.

Charging is carried out via wireless technology. The corresponding module is included in the delivery kit. As a pleasant addition, there is an LED sensor that signals the charging status and battery full level.

Guarantee

Samsung offers a standard warranty for its gadget. Its duration is 12 months, and the obligations do not apply to accidental damage or natural wear and tear of the device caused by use.

Instead of a conclusion

The Samsung Gear S3 watch is a product that can hardly be called revolutionary or innovative. But it captivates users with its performance, well-implemented ergonomics and simply incredible functionality.

High-quality housing and internal components allows you to count on long-term and absolutely problem-free operation of the device. The price tag of the gadget can be called moderate, and the cost itself fully corresponds to the opportunities that it opens up.

Advantages and disadvantages

Among the main advantages, the following deserve special attention:

  • Simplicity and convenience of the interface;
  • Hassle-free replacement of a standard strap;
  • Long period of autonomous operation;
  • Protection of the housing from moisture and dust;
  • Excellent interaction with Samsung Pay.

There are also disadvantages. Although some of them can be considered subjective. Among them:

At IFA 2016, Samsung presented the third generation of the line smart watch Gear. The new model received two branches: Classic and Frontier. The first option is designed for a mass audience, while the second has expanded functionality and a more expressive appearance. Samsung review Gear S3 Frontier will talk about the main functions of the device and summarize the efforts of the Korean company to improve the already popular S2 smartwatch.

Packaging and accessories

The contents of the delivery set are neatly packed in a stylish cylindrical box. The accessories are separated by several cardboard partitions for better stability during transportation. The watch is already magnetized to the charging station out of the box.
Inside:

  • Samsung Gear S3 Frontier;
  • Dock station;
  • Power unit;
  • microUSB cable;
  • Silicone strap;
  • Documentation.

The cost of the Frontier version in Russian online stores is about $375.

Design and ergonomics

The developments of the previous generation S2 in the new model were embodied in a more aggressive appearance. The round body of the Frontier has increased slightly in diameter and acquired a corrugated edging. The toothed ring is also an important functional element - you can use it to turn pages in the menu and receive notifications.
Despite the sporty design, the S3 may well suit formal business attire. To do this, you need to choose the appropriate dial and strap. There will definitely be no problems with the latter; Samsung produces straps in three sizes (S, M and L) for a 22 mm mount on the case. You can also use any other strap from a third-party manufacturer with your watch. A designer line of accessories from fashion designer Arik Levi is expected to be released soon.
The body of the device is predominantly made of 316L steel with a matte finish. Only back cover with sensors, made of glass. Frontiers look bulky and may not fit the tight sleeves of some shirts. For such cases, it is recommended to take a closer look at the Classic model. It is lighter and smaller than the older version.
Samsung does not hide that during development appearance S3 focused on the luxury watches TAG Heuer Connected. On touch screen The device does not have any “dead spots” with plastic inserts; the displayed information occupies 100% of the allotted area. In addition to the bezel, you can control the menu with two keys on the right side of the case.
On the left are three small holes for the earpiece. The Frontier does a great job as a wireless headset. The watch allows you to safely talk while driving without being distracted from the road.
Despite the sports-oriented model, using the S3 in training is quite problematic. The device is too bulky and hinders sudden movements of the wrist. In addition, the heart rate sensor does not always correctly read the body’s indicators.

Display

S3 Frontier displays information on an AMOLED matrix with a resolution of 360*360 pixels. Considering the small diagonal (1.3 inches), the pixel density still does not reach the level of modern smartphones - 278 dpi allows you to distinguish individual points on the screen, but the quality of the screen as a whole can be called high. On top of the matrix there is a protective glass Corning Gorilla Glass SR+ with a good oleophobic coating.
The clock display works in tandem with a light sensor. The brightness changes smoothly and correctly. S3 can also display basic data with minimal power consumption in AlwaysOn Display mode. A similar function is available in flagship smartphones Galaxy S7.
The picture on the screen is perfectly visible from almost any angle. Considering your current heart rate or the number of steps taken while running is not difficult. The disadvantages include the excessive sensitivity of the orientation sensor. You have to constantly turn the watch away from you so that the display is not backlit again. The situation is aggravated by the heavy case, which, if the strap is not too tight, constantly strives to slide down.
Frontier can determine whether a device's functionality is being used in this moment. If the S3 is just lying on the table, the power saving mode is activated. To bring the device back to life, you just need to put the strap on your hand. In this case, you need to wait about five seconds for the screen backlight. A small, but still a flaw that should be corrected with subsequent OS updates.

Interface

Like most other miniature devices from Samsung, the S3 Frontier runs Tizen OS. This particular model comes pre-installed with Tizen 2.3.2.
The principle of clock control has remained virtually unchanged since the previous model. As before, you can use more than just the display for navigation. The ridged navigation ring around the screen does a great job of navigating through menus, making the S3 easy to operate even with gloves on.
Two mechanical buttons on the side of the case are responsible for going back, going to the main screen and turning off the device. In normal mode, the watch always displays the watch face. Rotating the bezel to the left opens notifications, and to the right – a menu of widgets. A light swipe from top to bottom displays options and Current state Frontier.
Initially, 14 preset watch faces are available to the user. The range is expanding almost endlessly with new additions from the Galaxy Apps store. The entire interface is built on the Circle UI principle, icons are placed in a circle and occupy the maximum amount of free space.

Compatibility

Frontier was created for maximum audience coverage; immediately after the release of the watch, the developers implemented the ability to synchronize it with iOS devices. Samsung smartphones paired with S3 work perfectly. In Galaxy flagships S7 and S8 already have a pre-installed application for synchronizing with the clock. But the owners of others Android devices you'll have to tinker a little.
First you will have to download Samsung Gear, Gear S Plugin and Samsung Accessory Service. Then you need to register your account(Samsung Account). It will be used for correct operation health tracker S Health. On iPhone, the process is slightly simplified; you only need to install the first application from the specified list.
The watch is equipped with Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 4.2, NFC and GPS/GLONASS modules. The built-in microphone and speaker mean you don't have to take your smartphone out of your pocket to take every call. For convenient sending of messages it is supported voice dialing S Voice. In the settings you can specify auto mode Connect via Bluetooth without unnecessary notifications.

Performance and functionality

The Frontier hardware platform is represented by a 14nm Exynos 7270 processor with a maximum clock frequency of 1 GHz, 768 MB of RAM and four gigabytes internal memory. Compared with previous generation, there is a noticeable increase in performance even when flipping through the interface. All menus open without delays or sagging.
You can respond to incoming messages with a pre-prepared phrase, text or emoticon. Pre-installed apps include Calendar, S Voice, S Health, Player and Phone. The Samsung Apps store is constantly updated with new programs, so there should be no problems with updating the software.
The internal service S Health has expanded its capabilities. Now there is a fitness and sports mode. The first one reads information about steps taken, heart rate, fluids drunk and number of hours of sleep. Based on this data, the application builds interactive activity graphs. If a person sits in one place for more than an hour, the watch begins to vibrate, warning about the need for a walk.
Sports mode monitors running, squats, jumping and a whole range of other exercises. At the same time, the pulse, movement speed, and distance traveled are monitored. You can choose the number of calories to burn, then Frontier will inform you about the desired pace of exercise. The built-in altimeter gives you an idea of the change in altitude above sea level.

Autonomy

The built-in 380mAh battery allows you to use the watch for approximately 3-4 days in normal mode without rigorous training. Active sports with GPS tracking will drain the battery in two days. If you need more autonomy, pay attention to budget ones.

To power the S3 Frontier, a docking station with inductive charging technology is used. Simply place the device on a special platform; it will independently charge the battery to 100% in about 2 hours.

Conclusion

Samsung Gear S3 Frontier is one of the few so far smart watch with adequate time battery life and functionality. The device copes well with all the tasks assigned to it. The only drawback can be considered the excessive massiveness of the S3, due to which they will not be comfortable for those with thin hands. Otherwise, this is a great accessory for anyone who is constantly on the go.

Samsung Galaxy Watch vs Gear S3: Design

Although these two models are very similar in appearance, ours Galaxy look The Watch looks more sophisticated and elegant than the Gear S3. But this, again, depends on personal preference. For those unaware, the Gear S3 comes in two variants: Classic and Frontier. As the name suggests, the former looks more classic, while the latter looks more sporty. Both versions have a case diameter of 46 mm.

The Galaxy Watch comes in one design, but in two case sizes: 42 and 46mm, with the 46mm version only available in a silver case with a black bezel around the screen, and the 42mm version in black or color pink gold, which should appeal to girls and women.

One of the features of the new watch model is a realistic dial with hour hands and an imitation of the sound of a mechanical watch, thanks to which the gadget can easily be mistaken for a classic analog watch.

Galaxy Watch and Gear S3 features

In terms of functions related to activity tracking, Samsung devices have always been inferior to gadgets from such companies as Fitbit, Garmin or Polar. But with the Galaxy Watch, Samsung takes the experience to the next level by adding several new features.

The watch can automatically detect the start of a workout and can control up to 39 sports modes. To obtain more accurate data, the watch is equipped with a GPS module, so during training you can get data on speed, trajectory and route.

Another one new feature– stress management system. Combined with data from a heart rate sensor, this system can determine the user's stress level and recommend breathing exercises and meditation to reduce it. Galaxy Watch also received advanced sleep control, with automatic detection depth and phases of sleep.

Another watch will help you control your calorie and water consumption, which was not the case in the previous model. The Gear S3 had some of these features, but it can't detect stress levels and can't track as many sports modes.

As for other functions, the Galaxy Watch is also equipped with an NFC module for contactless payments via Samsung Pay, but without MST, which we, unfortunately, do not support. The watch also supports the use voice assistant Bixby and control other Samsung gadgets from your watch using the SmartThings app. Otherwise, with the exception of minor differences, the functionality of these two models is identical.

Samsung Galaxy Watch vs Gear S3: Specifications and Software

Like the Gear S3, the Galaxy Watch runs on the Tizen operating system (version 4.0). Used to pair with a smartphone updated application(formerly Samsung Gear).

The 46mm version of the Galaxy Watch uses the exact same screen as the Gear S3. This is a Super AMOLED panel with a diameter of 1.3 inches with a resolution of 360*360 pixels. The 42 mm version has a screen with the same resolution of 360*360 pixels, but with a smaller diameter - 1.2 inches. Using protective glass, the Galaxy Watch screens are better protected from bumps and scratches than the Gear S3 with Gorilla Glass SR+.

Another change affected the processor. Responsible for Galaxy Watch performance new processor Exynos 9110 with a frequency of 1.15 GHz, while the previous model is powered by an Exynos 7270 chip with a frequency of 1.0 GHz. Memory in both cases: 768 MB of RAM and 4 GB of internal memory. The LTE version of the Galaxy Watch will receive 1.5 GB of RAM, but it will not be available in our market.

Samsung Galaxy Watch and Gear S3: waterproof and battery life

The autonomy of the new watch model has improved significantly. If the Gear S3 could last a maximum of 4 days without charging, then for the Galaxy Watch this time changed to 7 days, thanks to a 472 mAh battery. But this only applies to the 46 mm version. The 42 mm watch has the same autonomy as the previous model.

In terms of water resistance, the Gear S3 is IP68 rated for water and dust resistance, meaning it can withstand short periods of submersion in water. The new model has a water resistance level of 5 ATM, which means they can withstand swimming and even diving to shallow depths.

Let's sum it up

Samsung Galaxy The Watch is a clear improvement over the Gear S3, but probably not enough to make me want to sell my Gear S3 and buy one right now. new version. Evolution, of course, is obvious, but this is precisely evolution, and not a revolutionary leap forward.

If smartwatches were a popular product and were purchased out of necessity rather than just curiosity, the Gear S3 Frontier might be recommended. While the smartwatch market is attracting the main attention Apple and Google, the unnoticed leader has become Samsung, bringing innovative functionality and unique elements of wrist-worn devices. Of course, it also had its mistakes, like the camera in the Galaxy Gear watch strap. However, with each new model, Samsung improves the quality of its watches, becoming a benchmark for other manufacturers.

The culmination of this strategy is . They're not perfect, but after years of experimenting with different concepts and features, the South Korean manufacturer has finally come up with a strong device. If Apple and Google don't pay attention to it, they could lose market share.

Big size

At first, the size of the S3 watch attracts attention - it is really large. The screen diagonal is 1.3 inches, while in the previous model the size was 1.2 inches, while the new one is 1.5 mm thicker and 10 g heavier. It's obvious that Samsung isn't trying to please all users at once. However, the hefty $349 price isn't just for size.

The watch cannot be called the most stylish, but it cannot be called unattractive either. Despite their massiveness, they are not uncomfortable. The classic round shape adds appeal, and the traditional silicone band doesn't pinch or scratch the skin like Apple watch bands. However, last year's S2 looks sleeker and it's surprising that Samsung hasn't offered a smaller version for slimmer wrists.

A version of the Frontier watch was tested, which has a bright big screen stands out against the background of the dark metal body. The large knurled buttons on the edges of the frame give the watch a rugged appearance, making it reminiscent of the top-of-the-line Casio G-Shock model. Many of the skins here are skeomorphic, showing Samsung's main strategy with the S3: it looks like a watch because it is a watch. Samsung also offers a slightly less robust Gear S3 Classic model.

Good appearance

Samsung uses 22mm straps with pin attachments, giving them more flexibility stylish look. Like Apple Watches, the official bands are easily interchangeable using a tiny switch on the inside of the band that quickly releases the contacts from the mount.

It is not so easy to install straps from regular watches; this will require special tool or something long and sharp and a fair amount of patience, but Samsung sells enough official straps that you won't have any problems installing. Additionally, the Frontier's silicone strap has a nice pattern and looks like it's made from carbon fiber.

Samsung is once again relying on its patented rotating bezel around the edges of the screen, which is designed to enhance visual appeal while also providing functionality. This watch has a beveled bezel that makes it look like a dive watch, although the IP68 water resistance rating will keep you from going too deep. The frame also protects the screen.

Face to face

Naturally, the main attention in a watch is drawn to the screen, and not only due to its size. It uses a Super AMOLED panel with a resolution of 360 x 360 pixels with Gorilla Glass protection. Resolution remains unchanged from the S2, but the screen size has grown, so the pixel density has decreased. However, bright, saturated colors are perfectly visible even in the sun, so reducing the density by 24 pixels per inch does not have much of an impact.

As with the S2, there's an Always-on screen option hidden in Settings under Style, and when activated, it makes the smartwatch look like a regular watch. Unfortunately, even with automatic brightness turned on, the screen has a significant impact on battery drain. It lasts all day, but at night you need to charge the watch, otherwise on the second day the 380 mAh battery will not be enough (the S2 has a capacity of 250 mAh). If you were expecting the watch to last for several days without recharging, you will be disappointed.

If you don’t keep the screen constantly on, the watch will work for two days, but even then it’s better to lower the brightness and turn off automatic heartbeat monitoring. However, even after this the clock will not last three days. Samsung uses wireless charging here.

Changes for the better

While the Gear S3 may look different from many other smartwatches, the functionality is the same. It uses a 64-bit 2-core processor with a frequency of 1 GHz with ARM Cortex-A53 cores, the amount of RAM is 768 MB. The Tizen OS operating system is used instead of Android Wear, but this does not seem to be a disadvantage. The system isn't as polished as Apple's watchOS, but Samsung's product beats the competition in some ways, offering simple, intuitive navigation. Even when you first get acquainted with a watch, you usually understand what needs to be done.

The rotating frame helps with this, eliminating the need to touch the screen again. It's more precise and natural to operate than the Digital Crown on Apple watch Watch, it allows you to quickly manage applications and different screens. Scrolling through menus and text is especially easy when you rotate the frame, as it's easier than clicking on small items on the screen. Even games allow you to use the frame as a control, so this watch is more suitable for gaming than others.

Samsung has built other functionality into the frame, allowing you to rotate it to answer calls or silence notifications, so you can be sure that this element will remain a key element in the company's future watches. The same can be said about other distinctive features of this watch, built-in GPS support and 4G LTE communication standard.

What else

Thanks to the support cellular communications S3 Frontier becomes a real smartphone on the wrist, which is what many of its owners want. To stay connected, you will have to purchase an additional SIM card.

If you forget or deliberately leave your smartphone at home, you will still be in touch. Almost the only thing the watch can't do is take pictures. You will be able to make and receive calls, receive notifications, send text messages, find out the results of sports competitions and everything else that can be done on a smartphone, if there is an application for this. Of course, the Gear S3 is not the first watch to support LTE, but here you can do more than just read emails, messages and calls. Samsung gives you the opportunity to explore the world around you with your watch.

To do this, the developers have expanded the capabilities of the watch and turned it into a companion for outdoor activities, offering sensors and applications for tracking movements. The altimeter and barometer measure elevation and sudden changes in atmospheric pressure, the speedometer shows maximum speed and the distance traveled on the bike. As a result, even non-fitness and sports enthusiasts can feel motivated to improve their results.

Pay while playing

In addition to outdoor activities, Samsung makes the watch compatible with Samsung Pay. This was achieved thanks to the support of terminals with NFC and MST (Magnetic Secure Transmission) standards. This means you can use your watch where you would normally swipe your credit card.

Payments worked without problems during testing, but naturally they cannot be used in those terminals where the card must be inserted inside. Please note that payment Samsung system Pay is already supported in Russia. To work with it you do not need to be the owner of the latest Samsung smartphones. In the shop Google Play Store has a Gear application that simulates operation on Galaxy smartphone S7, allowing you to save and use credit cards. In addition to the Galaxy S7, the Frontier watch was tested with a Google Pixel smartphone, the result was almost the same, apart from a few problems with determining the location and receiving notifications.

Non-standard App-titude

Samsung is clearly not averse to creating its own large application store to compete with Google, so the Gear application is only the first sign. However, how to lure third-party developers to the store is the main question.

To force developers to support the S3, Samsung has made the frame interface available, but the store is not yet full. There are apps from a number of big brands like ESPN, Uber and Spotify, but none as popular as Facebook, Twitter, Nike or Strava. There are a number of interesting exclusives and excellent watch shells, but many users will find the selection in the store meager.

Samsung says there are approximately 10 thousand apps in the store, but their quality is mostly poor. And there is doubt that it will ever grow.

Should you buy the Samsung Gear S3?

It's hard not to recommend the Samsung Gear S3, but its weak point is its size. For people with thin wrists, mainly women, the watch will be too big. Samsung still sells a smaller S2 model, but the $249 price tag seems steep for last year's technology.

However, the uncertainty of the future Android platforms Wear makes the S3 an even more attractive choice among smartwatch lovers. It's been over a year since the last significant Android Wear watch came out, and there's no telling when the next one will arrive. Android version Wear 2.0 has been delayed for several months and major manufacturers are in no hurry to release new models. Samsung offers a lot of functionality and it's hard to imagine the company like or being able to top these offerings.

Samsung was the first to promise to bring full smartphone functionality to the wrist and delivered on the promise with the Gear S3. Even with the lack of apps, the Frontier watch is a full-fledged product with extensive capabilities that works independently of smartphones, as well as excellent optimization operating system. Someday all watches will be as independent, from luxury ones with diamonds and gold to the cheapest options.

Until those days come, the Gear S3 is the best option.
