The story of a novice developer

Over the three years of studying at the university, I saved almost 66,000 rubles on development software. I didn’t spend a penny myself.

Evgeny Trigubov

saves on software

I’ll tell you how to get the software used by developers at Google, Siemens and Facebook for free.

Jetbrains Products for Learning

Saving: RUR 36,000 for 3 years.

A student subscription allows you to use all Jet Brains products for free for a year. I used the following programs: IntelliJ IDEA Ultimate for Java and Android programming, PyCharm Professional for Python language and WebStorm for front-end development. There are programs for other languages and programming purposes.

Understanding how development environments work saved me time during my internship. I was able to quickly get to grips with the development environment Visual Studio from Microsoft, because it is structured similarly: the same capabilities for tracking errors, editing code, building and testing the project.

36,000 R

I saved money on Jet Brains programs for 3 years with a student subscription

I obtained my license using the university mail:

  1. I went to the company’s website and clicked the Apply Now button.
  2. On the page that appeared, I chose the confirmation method by mail and indicated my university email.
  3. I confirmed my email - to do this, I opened the university email, found a letter from Jet Brains and followed the link.
  4. I downloaded the programs I needed.

If there is no university mail, then in the second step you can choose other ways to confirm your student status: send a photo of your student ID or ISIC student card.

Student Developer Pack: GitHub, DIgital Ocean, GitKraken

Saving: RUR 21,720 for 3 years.

GitHub- the most popular representative of the version control system. Developers use this platform to control the development process: track who added any line of code and when; revert to the previous state of the code if something went wrong, etc. It's like Google Docs for programmers.

In Digital Ocean a student is given $50 - enough to rent the simplest thing virtual server for 10 months for $5 per month. You can place a telegram bot on such a server. And to deploy your own website, you will need a more powerful server, say, for $15 per month. Trading bots are deployed on my server, bringing in modest passive income. In the future I plan to rent a server at my own expense.

In GitKraken the student receives an annual license to use the paid version of the program, which usually costs $60. The program complements the standard GitHub or other version control system: interaction with the code occurs through a window with a convenient interface instead of the classic command line.

When my student license expires, I will continue to use GitKraken, but will switch to free version. It seemed to me that there were no obvious advantages compared to the paid version.

Here's how I got the license:

  1. I went to the company’s website and clicked on the Get Your Pack button.
  2. Registered an account. Here you can specify your personal email, and not just your university email with the edu domain.
  3. On the Choose your plan page, you selected the subscription type - indicated the free version and clicked Yes, I’m a student.
  4. Provided your university email to confirm your student status. But you can attach a scan of your student ID.
  5. I indicated the name of the university, the year of my graduation and wrote how I plan to use the subscription. You can do this: I will use the pack to improve my programming skills (“I will use the software to improve my programming skills”).
  6. After 5-7 days, the information will be checked and an email will be sent to you with a link to activate your Student Developer Pack. You can download the programs from the link.

License requests are reviewed by humans. Therefore, if you make a mistake in the name of the university or the validity period of your student card is not visible in the photo, you may be refused.

I encountered this: the first time I was denied a license because I did not confirm my educational email for a long time. I applied for a license a second time and it worked out.
